NEWS OF THE WEEK--Harry THAW will be returned to the Matteawan state hospital and will not be transferred to some state insane asylum hospital,Dr.Albert W. FERRIS,chairman of the state lunacy commission said.The state commission has supervision over the state hospital of the criminal insane and only through its consent can a transfer be made. LOCAL NEWS--Rev.W.A. RUSSELL was called to Dyer Sunday afternoon on account of the serious sickness of his mother.He left on the Dyer train about 10 p.m.A card received from Brother RUSSELL Tuesday states that his mother died Monday morning. Ellimore SEVIER,one of the most prominent of the faculty of the colored school died very suddenly at the home of her father,Wm.SEVIER in South Brownsville on Wednesday morning.She was one of the most highly educated colored woman of the state,prominent in all movements looking to the elevation of her race. **************************************** THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40---NO.27 FRIDAY JUNE 12,1908 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE A BEAUTIFUL WEDDING--was soleminized at Methodist Church Wednesday evening when Miss Willie D. Rev.Pierce DUCKWORTH assisted by Dr.HENDERSON,performed the ceremony in the presence of a large concourse of friends.The bride was given by her brother,Livingston TAYLOR. LOCAL NEWS--Mr.& Mrs.Walton JORDON,of Jackson,visited Dr.& Mrs.W.H. WHITELAW this week. Miss Mary Louise ALLEN is in St.Louis,the guest of her aunt and uncle,Mr,& Mrs.Jack MANN. Dr. J.G. PATTON went to Memphis Saturday to see his sons,James and Hugh,who are visiting there. Attorney A.M. MARR,has been confined to his room for the past two weeks with an attack of malarial,he is improving. NEWS OF THE WEEK--George BARNES,precinct charman of the Planters Protective Association,was arrested in the circuit court chambers at Hopkinsville,Ky.,on a warrant accusing him of being a night rider. Michael EMORY,age 25,proprietor of a grocery store ay Wilmington,Del.,was shot and killed instantly by John HIPOLIT,a Pole,who formerly worked for him.HIPOLIT committed suicide by shooting himself. Near Crooked Bayou,a small stream on a plantation near Stuttgart,Ark.,known as the CRAIG Place,B.R. OLIVER shot and killed his sister,Mrs.STANLEY,while she was in the garden,setting out sweet potato plants, after which he went in the house and killed her husband,who was in bed sick. The young white girl, Dorothea NINER and Alonzo D. HOLMES,a negro,who eloped from Baltimore,were married by the Rev. M.W.D. NORMAN,a negro preacher in Washington,according to an admission made by the latter. Fred TRACEY, a member of the constitutional convention,editor of the Beaver Herald,member of the Democratic state committee and one of the best known politicians in Okla.,was indicted by the federal grand jury for robbing the post office at Beaver City. Daniel H. McMILLIAN,district federal judge in New Mexico, died in Denver. Word to this effect was received by rhe judge's son in Buffalo,N.Y. John Rufus ALEXANDER,born in Missouri,92 years ago,and who was the last survivor of the historic MIER expedition of 1842,died at Round Mountain,Texas.He was one of the prisioners of Mier,who drew a white bean after capture capture in 1842 and escaped death.The 17 men who drew black beans were shot to death by the Mexicans. Frank JOHNSON,a negro who killed a married woman because she refused to elope with him and then barricaded himself in a barn near Clarksburg,W.Va.,and wounded two members of the posse will be hanged. ******************************************** STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40---NO.28 FRIDAY JUNE 19,1908 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE NEWS OF THE WEEK--The first legal hanging since Oklahoma became a state took place in Lawton,Okla., when Frank FORD,a negro was executed for the murder of his wife.One thousand people saw the hanging. FORD was dropped seven feet,instantly breaking his neck. Lloyd SHELTON,aged 18 years,was killed at a ball game near Mayfield,Ky., Sunday evening by being hit in the breast with a ball thrown from second to first base.He was a spectator and had just arrived at the game. Mrs.A.S. WARD,mother of Montgomery WARD,Chicago merchant prince,died at Niles,Mich.,aged 87 years. Harry K. THAW will not have to go back to the Matteawan state hospital for the criminally insane.This was decided at a hearing by Supreme court Justice MORSCHAUSER in the rooms of the bar association. Alleging her husband, Adam ROTH has not taken a bath since their marriage in 1901, Anna ROTH,of LaSalle Co.,Ill.,asks for a legal separation. Frank McAFEE,an eight year convict from Woodruff Co.,Ark.,sent up for larcency,drank wood alchol and died in great agony. FROM BELLS--Mr.James WOODARD,living near Cypress church,has been seriously ill for several days. Miss Emma BEST and Mr.Tate BOND,of Memphis,were married Tuesday at the Methodist Church in Bells. They will reside in Memphis. LOCAL NEWS--On Thursday of last week, Mrs.Isaac AIKEN,of the Cliff Creek community,died after an illness of several months.The funeral services were at the grave by Elder Jas.H. AIKENS. She is survived by her husband ,a daughter and two sons. Dr.A.W. YOUNG,of Ripley,died in the Presbyterian hospital at Memphis last Sunday,and was buried at Ripley Monday. He was a native of this county and raised near Durhamville.Mrs.Tally,of this city,is a sister,as is also the noted educator,Miss Sue YOUNG. Mrs. Katherine CALHOUN,wife of Horace CALHOUN,died at the home of her mother,Mrs. Rosa E. TRUSS,near Stanton Wednesday morning,June 10th. Mrs.CALHOUN had been an invalid for the past six months.She bore her long suffering with Christian fortitude and waited with patience the Master's call.She was a young woman,of a most lovable nature and possessed many beautiful traits of character.She will be greatly missed in this community,where all her life was spent. Besides her husband,she leaves a daughter about 20 months old, her mother and one sister.Her remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Stanton,Thursday morning, services being conducted by her former pastor,Rev.B.W. BROWN,of the Baptist church. MEUX and Miss MEUX attended the TAYLOR-SMITH wedding in Brownsville Wednesday. NEGRO SUES NIGHT RIDERS;PADUCAH,KY--Claiming that night riders threats caused him to trade his farm in this county,at a sacrifice,Austin HOWARD,a negro,has brought suit in the McCracken circuit court to recover his property.He states that he was warned to leave the county and that he traded his farm for a farm in Illinois that is not worth more than $500,while his farm was worth $2000. NEWS OF THE WEEK--Joseph GERST,aged 79 years,is dead at Danville,Pa.,from Hydrophobia.Mr.GERST was bitten by a dog two months ago,and the wound apparently healed,when the disease broke out. Burnett PHELPS,one of several men indicted in Marshall County,Ky.,for night riding,was placed on trial Tuesday.He is accused of being in the raid on Birmingham when John SCRUGGS,a negro,was killed and his grandchild was so badly shot,it died the next day. LOCAL NEWS--The five-year-old son of Will WADDELL,residing near town,was thrown from a horse last Thursday and sustained a broken shoulder.His infury is quite painful,but not serious. Mrs.Martha JACOCKS died Thursday morning at the home of her son,C.D. JACOCKS near Rein.The deceased was past seventy years old and had been in bad health sometime. Mr.J.B. KINNEY has resigned his position with the Belknap Hardware Co. of Louisville,and has accepted the position of sales manager and special for the Benedict-Warren-Davidson Co.,of Memphis. Miss Eva BEASLEY,for eleven years connected with the post office has tendered her resignation affective July 1st.Her place will be filled by Mr.Homer CULLEY. Mr. Dixie OWEN and wife left for home in Dallas,Texas.They are of pioneer Haywood County ancestery. The Harvester of Death visited the home of Mr.E.A. RAWORTH,on June the 18th,and claimed as its victim that faithful companion and loving mother.Mrs.Helen RAWORTH was born November 9th,1847,died June 18th, 1908,and was 61 years old. She was a sister of Esq.T.O. HOLLOWAY and Mrs.M.G. GREEN,of Brownsville. Besides her husband,she leaves two sons,Allen,of Mississippi,and Richard,now taking a law course at Lebanon,Tenn.;and three daughters,Mrs.Tam GRAVES,of Tibbs,and Misses Mamie & Emma RAWORTH, at home.Mrs.RAWORTH joined the Methosist church when 13 years old,abd was a sweet and noble Christian character.She has been in delicate health for several years,but had been confined to her bed only a few days,when the peaceful end came.She was conscious to the last and recognized her friends and loved ones.She was laid to rest in Trinity cemetery.Revs.HUMPHREY & NORMAN officiating. On last Thursday,while O.D. RUSSELL and Wrenn TYUS were fishing in the Hatchie river,they had a battle with a big moccasion snake that resulted in a victory for the snake and came near being fatal to TYUS.Long story how they chashed the snake,turned over their boat,TYUS got bit,the snake got away. WALKER and son,Clyde,of Memphis,went to Chicago Saturday last,to attend the funeral of Mrs.Emma WALKER,wife of Eugene WALKER. Mrs.B.A. POWELL went to Ripley the first of the week to be present at the marriage of her cousin,Miss Mary Belle ANTHONY on Tuesday. NEGRO PUBLICLY HANGED; CUERO,TEXAS--Monk GIBSON,a negro,was hanged this afternoon for the murder of five members of the CONDIT famiy on September 28th,1905,the victims being mother and four children.The execution was public and was witnessed by a large crowd,hundreds of people coming on an excursion train to see the legal hanging.Felix POWELL,also a negro,was hanged in January for participation in this same tragedy. NEWS OF THE WEEK--Moritz GLEUCK,the oldest inmate of the Home of the Daughters of Jacob,New York,drowned himself in a water tank at the home.He was found lying on his back in a tank in four feet of water with his hands across his breast.He was 80 years old. August SENECAE,17 years old,died at Woonsocket,R.I.,as a result of having been hit on the head by a pitched ball during an amateur game at Brighton. John and James MAWBERRY,brothers,living in Albermarle County,near the Virginia home of the President's theories against race suicide.Their homes were visited by the stork,bouncing twins being left in one home and three healthy youngsters in the other. FROM SPRING HILL--Mrs.H.H. HARPER is on the sick list this week. LOCAL NEWS--Will BERSON,who for the past two years has been employed in the cotton business with James TIPTON,has accepted the position of book keeper at the First National Bank,vice H.W. STRATTON resigned. Mrs.F.R. OGILVIE was called to Stanton Monday to the bedside of her cousin,Miss Jennie HEWITT,of Memphis.We regret to state Miss HEWITT died Tuesday Afternoon at the residence of H.M. NASH.Her remains were interred in Stanton cemetery Wednesday afternoon,Rev.H.R.TAYLOR officiating. ************************************************************************** THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40---NUMBER 31 FRIDAY JULY 10,1908 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE THE COUNTY DEMOCRATIC EXECUTIVE COMMITTE--met Tuesday,including Dr.W.H. MOODY, J.G. GOODMAN, Emory BATCHELOR, Ben BURLISON,and R.W. COX. NEGRO ESCAPES ARGRY MOB;SPRINGFIELD,ILLINOIS--Clergy BALLARD of this city was cut to pieces by a wild negro early this morning while he was defending his home from a fiendish brute who had been caught in his daughter's room.The negro,Joe JAMES,was captured at daylight and was rescued from a mob of infuriated people by the police.His identification is comp;ete.The crime was one of the most cold blooded ever committed in this city. BALLARD and family,who live in a modest home in the northern part of the city had retired about midnight.A short time later Blanche,the sixteen old daughter,was awakened by the presence of someone in the room.A shout awakened the father,who sprang from the bed and started for the front door.As he stepped out he met the negro coming around the corner.The negro had a small knife in his hand and with this stabbed BALLARD,who was unarmed,thirteen times.The wounded man was rushed to the hospital,where he died at 11 a.m. this morning. "UNCLE REMUS" LAID TO REST; ALTANTA,GA.--During a heavy thunderstorm,with the rains coming down in torrents,the remains of Joel Chandler HARRIS,the author and journalist,who was so well known as "Uncle Remus,"was laid to rest in West View Cemetery,on the outskirts of this city today.Previous to the interment,brief psalm services were held at Mr.HARRIS' late residence,followed by the obsequies at St.Anthony's Chapel,where Father JACKSON officiated.Shortly before 4 p.m.,the hour set for the funeral,a heavy thunderstorm began,with sharp lightening and a downpour. NEWS OF THE WEEK--The Rev.T.H. FEAGIN,a leading Baptist preacher,of Texas,was killed by lightening while conducting a revival meeting at China,Texas.He had just called upon sinners to repent. An indictment charging murder in the first degree has been returned against C.B. MEADOWS,the Fort Worth,Texas engineer,held as as a suspect in the Houston's alleged trunk murder mystery. LOCAL NEWS--Peter BELL,a well known and industerious negro residing seven miles west of town,died Sunday and was buried Monday in the Mercer cemetery. J.L. WINDROW,residing two miles from town, is confined to his room with a broken leader in his left leg.His horse fell down with him and caused the injury. Columbus FLOWERS,age 12 years,son of Samuel FLOWERS,residing near Tibbs,was struck by lightening Monday afternoon and instantley killed,while working in the field. O.D. RUSSELL & Co. doing a grocery and hardware business here,made an application Saturday to be declared bankrupt.The reason of this was on account of poor collections. Edward CLEMENS died at his home in the Sixth district on the 4th inst,last and was buried at the Taliaferro burying ground on Sunday,Elder AIKEN conducting the service.He was well known in the county,at different times being employed as clerk in several of the stores here.He was a member of the Christian church and 43 years old. He married a Miss WHITELAW,who survives him. Floyd PARKS,son of John PARKS,residing eleven miles north of Brownsville,came home from Mayflower,Ark., in a wounded condition,as a result of a shotgun accident.On July 4th,he and his brother-in-law were handling a gun and by some means it exploded.The explosion glazed Floyd's knee and inflicted a painful,but not serious wound. Mrs.Maria L. McKAY,who was a girl reared here and married to Maj.Gil McKAY in 1855,died at her home in Marshall,Texas on June 20th.As a girl,and young matron,she was noted for her lovely disposition and beautiful person as well as accomplishments.Mafor McKAY was killed at the battle of Mansfield in 1863 and his widow,loyal to his memory,never married again.She leaves a son and daughter,both married in Texas,and several relatives here. We clip the following from the Grant(Okla) Democrat;"Perhaps the friends and acquaintances of Mr.Geo.D. RUDD will be very much surprised to learn of his death.Mr.RUDD moved fromStanton,Tenn.,to Grant in February 1906,and while there made many friends,he lived in Grant for about four months,when his health began to fail,then he moved to the mountains,near Ozark,Ark.,where he resided up till Saturday June 20th,at 3 p.m. when the death angel called for him and told that time was to be no more."Mr,RUDD was for years a magistrate in the Third district of this county.His death will be deeply deplored by his many friends here. A negro,signing his name as Julius GLENN,forged the name of W.T. SHERMAN--once well known in this city and county,died at his residence in Sheffield,Ala.,on Thursday last,aged about 60 years.The remains were brought here and buried Oakwood Cemetery,on Sunday last,the Woodsmen of the World and Rev.H.G. HENDERSON conducting the services.Thirty years ago few men were better known in town than Will SHERMAN,first as city marshel and later as mayor,both of which offices he filled honorably and well.As a man,he had many friends and was popular with all classes,and his memory will long be cherished.About twenty years since he moved to Alabama and since he made his home there.After leaving here he married his second wife,who with a grown son survive as well as two children by his first marriage,Mrs.J.M. COX,of this place and Walter SHERMAN of Sheffield. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--Mr.Will SCOTT and Miss Ethel SUMNERS were married Monday afternoon at the residence of Mr. Sam MULHERON,Rev.C.O.N. MARTINDALE officiating, and left immediately on the 6:30 train for their wedding tour. John W. EZELLE and Miss Adolie Justine CASTELETON were married at the home of the bride's parents in Sealy.Texas,June 4th. Mr.EZELLE is the manager of the telephone company at Sealy. MOSES,left Monday for their home in Alabama. ******************************************************************* THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40---NO.32 FRIDAY JULY 17,1908 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE PLANTING DYNAMITE MINES;NASHVILLE,TENN.--The depredations of the night riders have caused the citizens of Tiptonville,in Lake County,to adopt extra ordinary means for their mutual protactions.Five hundred pounds of dynamite have been planted in the shape of mines at every place in the county likely to receive a visit from the riders,and a committee from the Law and Order League,named fot the purpose,has been trained to set off the mines at the proper moment.The county jail in which suspects are imprisoned was surrounded last night,and the inmates given to understand that a dummy hanging to a telephone pole at a convenient distance was a representative of one of their number who had refused to talk when requested.Five hundred men have been arrested in the Fourth district for alleged night riding. NEWS OF THE WEEK--"Jack" FLEMING,who won renown during the U.S.Civil War by taking the Confederate cruiser Tallahassee out through Halifax harbor in 1864,eluding the northern fleet that was lying in wait,is dead at Ketch Harbor, N.H. He was 98 years old. FLEMING had been a pilot for over 60 years. Eleven thousand volts of electricity more than five times the voltage ordinarily used on condemned criminals at Sing Sing,failed to kill James HAYES,28 years old,a Westinghouse employee in the New Haven railroad yards at Stamford,Conn. Harry K.THAW is to replace the bell ruined in the recent fire at the Appleby Manor Memorial church at Kittanning,Pa.THAW gave the original bell,and hearing of its destruction,has written asking the church authorities to its duplicate and send the bill to him. LOCAL NEWS--Mr.& Mrs.D.T. MORRIS are the parents of a new girl,born Monday morning. Harry WHITEHEAD,who holds a good position with the Zeliner Shoe Co.,of Memphis,is at home with his parents with a protracted case of malarial fever. The judgement obtained by Miss Sallie ROAD,against Judge Henry W. BOND,of St.Louis,for several thousand dollars has been arrested and the case will come up for final disposition in the courts of St.Louis this fall. John A. RYAN has returned from a visit to his aged mother at Shelbyville,Ind. He speaks in glowing terms of the prosperity and industry of that section.The recent panic temporarily crippled some of the big industries,but had no affect on the price of lands.Mr.RAYNES says land that sold for $75 to $100 an acre a short time back are now selling for $125 and $135.All factories and industries have started up again in full blast,and from what he could see,prosperity had struck the place in good shape. Everette A. PUGH,aged 28 years,son of Mrs.Lelia PUGH,of Memphis, died July 11th at Denver,Colo. Fire,of incendiary orgin,caused at $35,000 loss at Felsenthal,Ark.,a small town in South Arkansas,Tuesday night.Several Merchantile Houses and a bank were destroyed and the residence of Ike FELSENTHAL was saved only by herioc efforts.The town was founded several years ago by the FELSENTHALS,who are cousins of the Brownsville FELSENTHAL family. BEST near Johnson's Grove,became involved in a difficulty on Saturday,July 11th,and Edd struck Bud in the head with a fence rail,crushing his skull and killing him.The father of the two boys had sent them to the barn to shell corn.Bud wanted to shell in Edd's tub.Objection was raised and the boys began throwing ears of corn at each other.Finally Bud picked up a board and started at Edd.The latter ran out of the barn and secured a rail,at the same time warning his brother not to advance.Bud continued toward him when the younger brother struck the fatal blow.At the preliminary hearing trial,Edd was exonerated from blame. THAW BACK IN PRISON PROPER;POUGHKEEPSIE,N.Y.--Sheriff Robert Winthrop CHANDLER made radical changes in the quarters of his millionaire charge,Harry Kendall THAW,today,and as a result THAW no longer occupies the fine apartment of the undersheriff,nor sleeps alone in the juvenile part of the jail,but on the other hand,he is in jail proper with drunks,colored people,vagrants and the like.He is slightly separated from them,in that the sheriff has given him the whole upper tier of cells,light in all on the southern end of the jail.THAW's calling list has also been cut down and now his friends can see him only at certain hours.His new quarters are minus a telephone and THAW has been put on rigid jail rules. NIGHT RIDERS AGAIN;LEXINGTON,KENTUCKY--A special from Maysville says that a band of 15 men called Samuel RIGDON from his house last night and beat him with a whip until the blood ran down his body.RIGDON is a tenant on Chase CRAWFORD's farm and has his tobacco crop pooled.RIGDON today secured warrants for the arrests of Baylas WILSON and Ben COLE,accusing them of being in the gang. NEWS OF THE WEEK--Ex-Chief Justice Henry Gaston BUNN,aged 70 years,for eleven years on the Arkansas supreme bench,died at Eldorado,Ark.He was a native of N.C. A mob of 100 or more men fought for the possession of Hugh JONES,a negro,who attempted to assault Miss Ora YOPPS,17 years,of Middleton,Tenn.After four hours,the negro was strung to a tree. LOCAL NEWS--A.M. AUSTIN,one of the most prominent and oldest citizens of our town,died at his residence Wednesday night and will be buried today,funeral services being conducted at the Baptist church at 10 o'clock. Mr.James A. HICKS died at the residence of Mr.J.W. BROWN in this city on Monday afternoon,aged 33 years and was buried at Oakwood Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon,Revs.DUCKWORTH and HENDERSON conducting the ceremony. He was a victim of Brights' disease,and has been a great sufferer for several years,though his death came at last as a surprise as he had apparently been improving for several months.Peace to his ashes and green be his memory. Our community was shocked on Tuesday morning last to hear of the death of Mrs.Cappie Taylor SHAW by a sad accident,and many regrets are expressed at her death. In company with Mrs.Will DAVIS,she was driving in a buggy on the road near Tibbs.On attempting to cross a bridge,the horse became frightened.Mrs.DAVIS got out to lead the horse over,but he became unmamageable and backed off the levee.Mrs.SHAW was thrown violently from the buggy,her back being broken by striking a log.Death was instanteous.She was the daughter of the late Jas. R.TAYLOR,was 45 years of age,and had been married about 26 years.The remains were interred at Tabernacle Wednesday,Dr.NORMAN,assisted by Dr.DUCKWORTH.She leaves a husband,several sisters,and numerous remote relatives to mourn her loss. Mr.Thompson A. GAUSE,of Ripley,who was a native of and reared to manhood in Brownsville,ex-chairman of the County Court,a leader in religious affairs and prominent socially,dropped dead at his home in Ripley on Sunday evening last.He was the father of John P. GAUSE,who married a daughter of the late John J. MANN.His remains were interred in Maplewood Cemetery in Ripley On Monday. Death has been busy among our older citizens of late.It becomes our sad duty to chronicle this week,the death of Mr.T.H. RICE,who passed away Monday afternoon at the home of his neice,Mrs.John T. GRAY. AUSTIN,which occurred at his home in this city Wednesday evening,July 22nd,Brownsville lost one of its oldest and most prominent citizins,a man of affairs,a churchman of note,and one whose life taken all in all was an example of true worth and value to mankind.Born in Hanover Co.,Va.,83 years ago,he came to this county as a boy with his parents.In 1863 he married Miss Sue HOLMES,who with two daughters and three sons survive.The funeral services were held at the Baptist church Friday morning,Rev.Gilbert DOBBS officiating,burial in Oakwood cemetery.He was the last survivor of an extensive family of brothers and sisters.
