MRS.ELIZABETH P. HARWELL,aged 71 years,died at her home near Rudolph Friday last,and was buried Saturday at Zion,Rev.R.L. NORMAN conducting the funeral services.Mrs.HARWELL's death was caused by pneumonia which produced congestion.She had been a member of the Methodist church since the age of 11 years and lived a consistant christian life.Two sons and two daughters survive her. KILLED IN CHURCH DOOR;JELLICO,TENNESSEE--One of the bloodiest of ? in the history of East Tennessee-Kentucky line,north of Anthras postoffice,today.The scene was a little Baptist church within fifty yards of which a blind tiger has been operated for months. Just as the services had closed this morning,and nearly all the congregation had emerged from the church,a crowd of drunken men,who had visited the blind tiger,began firing into the worshipers with pistols. John BENNETT, J.W. McKINNEY and Edward THOMAS were shot down in the church door and died almost instantly;streams of their blood from their wounded bodies flowing dowm the steps of the little church. The preacher,Rev.KING was shot and mortally wounded,falling in the church yard.Another worshipper named GIBSON was also shot down in front of the church,but is not dangerously wounded.The cause:a drunken mens' work. LOCAL NEWS--HON.J.F. YOUNG died at his home in Halls on the evening of September 29th,of erysipelas,after an illness of two weeks.At the time of his death,he was 84 years of age,having been born in this county in 1824.He was formerly a resident of Haywood County.In 1848,he was married to Miss Sarah BRADFORD,daughter of Major Hiram S. BRADFORD. He moved to Lauderdale County in 1861.He was a prominent man in Lauderdale,having been elected to the State Legislature in 1873. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--MRS.J.J. MCCLELLAN is delighted to have her guests,her mother,Mrs.R.E. THOMPSON,of Lebanon,Tenn.,and her three sisters; Mrs.T.B. KING,of Brownsville,Mrs.Rebecca PRUITT,of Lebanon,Tenn.,and Mrs.J.M.ROSEBOROUGH,of Victoria,Texas.(West Point,Miss.,Times-Herald) BEN ROSS is down with typhoid fever. MRS.ALICE WILKS,and little granddaughter,Nannie NEWMAN,visited last week at Jones. NEWS received Tuesday is to the effect that N.DUKE MACON,who resides a few miles north of town is in critical condition,with but a small chance of recovery. THE STATES GRAPHIS VOLUME 40 NO 44 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FRIDAY OCTOBER 9,1908 SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--BELLS,TENN.OCTOBER 5TH.Ernest WHITE & Miss Bertha CRAIG were married at the residence of Elder J.R. FARROW at Alamo.Elder FARROW said the ceremony.Mr.WHITE is the foreman of the Crockett Sentinel in this city,and Miss CRAIG is a prominent teacher.They will make their home in Bells. MR.& MRS.G.W. LYLE announce the engagement and marriage of their daughter,Irene,to Mr.Dan G. EGGERMAN,of Shawnee,Okla.,to take place early in November. MRS.HENRY BERSON is quite sick. MRS.E.B. CHESTER and Miss Bessie FAIN are in Chicago. MRS.WALKER,of Missouri,is the guest of her sister,Mrs.S.J. TURNER. Dr.T.R. MEUX,of Fresco,Calif.,is in Stanton,where he was called by the death of his brother,J.S. MEUX. MRS.BOONE KILLIBREW and little sons,Thomas and Neel,en route from Potean,Okla.,to Clarksville,Tenn.,spent one day here last week with Mrs.S.K. NEEL. NIGHT RIDERS KILL SEVEN:HICKMAN,KY--Fifty night riders made a raid on the home of Dave WALKER,a negro,last night,and killed WALKER and his children,shooting a babe to death in its mother's arms.WALKER had cursed a white woman and drew a gun on a white man.The night riders went to WALKER's house to give him a beating and ordered him from the house.WALKER refused to come out and fired into the mob.The night riders then poured coal oil around the building,fired it and forced the occupants to flee from the burning building.WALKER,his five-year-old daughter and a small baby were killed outright,the baby being killed in it's mother's arms as she came from the burning house.The mother was shot through the stomach and will die.Three other children were shot down and can not recover.The oldest son is missing,and it is believed he was incinerated in the burning building. LOCAL NEWS- -Miss Olivia,daughter of the late Dorsey O. THOMAS,died at the home of her mother in Fresno,Calif.,on Tuesday night last,of consumption,after a lingering illness,aged 22 years. DUKE MACON,noted printer and known all over the south died at his home near Rudolph on Thursday last after a lingering illness of Brights' disease.He was about ?5 years of age.He was an old time resident of Brownsville,lived with his mother and made his home here for many years,and worked off and on in nearly all the printing offices that were here for thirty years.A widow and two children and several brothers survive him. MR.JAMES S. MEUX,of Stanton,one of our most prominent citizens died at his home in Stanton on Monday October 5th,in the 65th year of his age.For many years he has been foremost in all that stood for religion,justice,and high morality,and from the beginning,as at the end,commanded the respect and love of all who knew him.He entered the Confederate army as a private in the First Confederate Cavalary,April 15th,1862 and surrended May 11th,1865.He was one of the early members of Hiram S. BRADFORD Bivouac and deeply interested in the work of that organization,and on Wednesday last his remains were laid to rest by that order.He is survived by his widow,Mrs.Joe S. MEUX,two children;Miss Tempe MEUX and Dr. George MEUX,of Memphis;and a brother and sister,Dr.T.R. MEUX,of Fresno,Calif.,and Mrs.SALE,of Memphis. SAM SANFORD was thrown from his horse and was badly bruised up. UNCLE ELISHA JACKSON died a few days ago at his home near Fruitvale,aged 86 years. EMMETT CONNER of Ashport,was for several days this week,the guest of his grandmother,Mrs.Kate COMEGYS. ADDITIONAL LOCALS--NEWS was received here Thursday morning of the death of Vernon MOORE,son of Dr.W.B.MOORE,at Monravia,Calif.,Wednesday.The remains will be taken to Greensburg,Indianna for interment.Mr.MOORE was a native of this county and lived here during his boyhood.For some years he has been a traveling auditor and was last situated in Chicago,where he became a victim of tuberculosis,after which he moved to California in a vain search for health.We extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family. THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40 NO 46 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FRIDAY OCTOBER 23,1908 NIGHT RIDERS IN PARAGOULD,ARK--Nine armed and mounted men,wearing black masks,rode through the eastern portion of the county Friday night warning cotton growers not to sell their staples for less than three cents.J.C.BROWN and Josh TYNER,two of the laeding farmers of the county were among those warned. NEWS OF THE WEEK-- Commanding him to produce Harry K.THAW in Pittsburg forthwith,a United States marshel,served the writ of a Federal court upon Dr.LAMB,superintendent of the Matteawan asylum. LOCAL NEWS--Archie SHAW,aged about 70 years,died at his residence twelve miles east of Brownsville,late Tuesday afternoon.His remains were interred at Union cemetery Wednesday afternoon.Mr.SHAW was an old Confederate soldier,being a member of Hiram S.Bradford bivouac. AT AN EARLY HOUR Friday morning last,death claimed one of Ripley's most esteemed ladies,Mrs.John CONNER Sr.For many weeks she had been confined to her bed with illness.She had passed the three score and ten mark,and was a devout christian lady.In early childhood she united with the Baptist church.The funeral took place at the Baptist church Friday at 3 p.m.,conducted by Dr.W.H.BRUTON,burial followed in Maplewood cemetery.She leaves her husband,Capt.John CONNER,Sr.,the only survivor of the Mexican war in Lauderdale county,and five children;Verser CONNER,of Russellville,KY, Mrs.J.W.DILLON,of Dallas,Texas, Calvin CONNER,of Ripley, John CONNER Jr.,of Ashport, and Mrs.William WHITE,of Ripley. READ,died at the home of his sister,Laura,wife of Rev.James IVEY,in Weatherford,Texas,on the 16th of this month.When quite a young man,he lived here a number of years and will be rembered by many of our people.(paper has pages missing) THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40 NO 48 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FRIDAY NOVEMBER 6,1908 FROM BELLS--ROBERT FLEMMING,cashier of the Bank of Crocket,has been sick for some time with typhoid fever. MR.JIM POSTON,well known in Brownsville,died at his home in Memphis October 22nd.His remains were brought to Bells and interred in Bellview cemetery. MEMORIAL SERVICES were held last Sunday evening at Cypress church in memory of Walker GRANT,who died at his home in McNairy county Sunday,October 18th.Walker was reared near Bells. THE NIGHT RIDERS a few nights ago,went to a negro cabin near Fruitvale,and shot several times in the house.No one was hurt. CARDS are out announcing the approaching marriage of Rev.Yates MOORE to Miss Lida Belle HUNT,of Stanton,Tuesday,November 3rd at 7:15 p.m. HENRY JONES of Memphis and Miss Beulah SHIVERS were married last Thursday night near Bells.They will make their home in Memphis. LOCAL NEWS--BORN Friday,October 30th,to Mr.& Mrs.A.A. MARKS,in New Orleans,a fine girl. MR.THOMAS JARRETT died at his home in Shreveport,La.,Friday night,after quite a long illness of peritonitis.He married here some five years since,Mrs.Nora HESS,daughter of Mrs.L.H.JOHNSON,and they have a son.This is the second bereavement Mrs.JOHNSON has experienced in the last few months,having recently lost a son. MRS.LOUIS TRAVIS SHELTON died at the residence of Mr.Dabney SHERRILL in this city,on Tuesday last,aged 61 years,and was buried at Stanton on Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock,the funeral service being conducted by Rev.R.L.NORMAN.Mrs.SHELTON was born in Prince Edward county,Va.,coming to West Tennessee at an early age and married Dr.James SHELTON and was the mother of two sons,one living in Memphis,the other here. (More on the death of James A.POSTON)His father was Col.John L.POSTON,who was county clerk of Haywood county just after the war,and James was his deputy clerk.He leaves a wife and four sons,Seth,Louis,Richard and Ernest;and one daughter,Miss Lillian POSTON. DR.NATHANIEL M.JOHNSON died at his home near Henning October 29th,in the 78th year of his age as the result of a complication of diseases combined with the infirmities incident to one in his years.Dr.JOHNSON was born in this county.He studied medicine under his uncle,Dr.Egbert HAYWOOD,afterward gradusting in Philadelphia,and did his first practice here .About1856,he moved to Durhamville,where he married a Miss WALKER,a lovely woman,who preceded him to the grave a few years since.He was a frequent visitor to relatives here,being a cousin of Messrs.R.F.and ? JOHNSON.He is survived by three daughters,Mesdames R.B.LIPACOMB,W.B. LIPSCOMB and Sam ALTON;and two sons,Walker,of Henning,and Nat,who lives at Curve,Tenn. MISS LAURA MANN left last Friday for Vilonia,Ark.,to enter school at that place.She was accompanied by her brother,W.E. MANN. MISS MARY AUSTIN has returned from a visit to her brother,Dr.W.S. AUSTIN,in Knoxville. MR.& MRS.F.S.PRICE are rejoicing in the presence at their home,a little girl,who came October 21st. THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40 NO 49 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FRIDAY NOVEMBER 13,1908 LOCAL NEWS--The 4-year-old daughter of Andrew SPILLER,Who resides near Nutbush,was burned to death Thursday of last week.The little tot was playing in front of the fire when its clothing caught and before the flames could be put out,the child was dead.She was buried Friday. MRS.JENNIE BYRD,wife of John BYRD,53 yrs.,died at her home near Malissa,Madison County Monday afternoon at 3 p.m.and was buried here Tuesday,Rev.H.G.HENDERSON conducting the services.She was a sister of Mr.Thad POPE and Mrs.Bryant KEATHLEY.Seven sons survive her. THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40 NO 50 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FRIDAY NOVEMBER 20,1908 LOCAL NEWS--UNCLE WM.SEIVER,the well known colored plasterer,died at his home here on Tuesday night,aged 82 years.The property of the elder John SEIVER,and always a splendid type of old time servant,slavery hung lightly on his shoulders and emancipation found him a trained worker,and he profited by it,raising a family of respectable,worthy and industerious people. MRS.MARY FRANCES GREEN,aged 74 years,died at the home of Mr.O.G.BOMER in this city on Wednesday.Rev.H.G.HENDERSON conducting the services.Mrs.GREEN was of an old and prominent Haywood county family.One daughter,Mrs.O.G.BOMER and one brother,Mr.T.O.HALLOWAY,and two nephews,Messrs.E.C.KING & John KING survive her. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--At 2 p.m. Wednesday,at the home of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.Mat CLARK,Miss Dimetra Harbert was married to Mr.Harry MADDOX,of Somerville,Rev.C.O'N MARTINDALE officiating.They left immediately for their home in Somerville. THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40 NO 51 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FRIDAY NOVEMBER 27,1908 LOCAL NEWS--MISS DORA RICE,well known in Haywood County,and at one time a teacher in the public schools,died at the home of Mr.B.L.CAPELL on Friday morning last after a lingering illness of tuberculosis.Deceased was the daughter of the late W.T. & Mrs.Sarah RICE,and leaves surviving,the mother,several brothers and two sisters,all residents of Haywood county. J.G.GOODMAN,who has been engaged in the grocery business here for a number of years,made an assignment Tuesday afternoon.His liabilities are given at $2,260,with assets to the amount of $1,500.There are 36 creditors,half of them being Memphis firms. THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40 NO 52 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FRIDAY DECEMBER 4,1908 LOCAL NEWS--BORNto Mr.& Mrs.J.W.HUDSON,Wednesday,November 25th,a fine girl. MRS.BETTY McKEIL has sold her residence on East Main Street to Mr.Dave BOYD.Consideration:$1,800. Mr.& Mrs.ROBERT F.JONES are the happy parents of a fine daughter who arrived Thursday morning. THE SUICIDE MANIA seems to have full swing in Memphis this week. Monday morning at an early hour,Mrs.N.P.ERRINGTON,of Chicago,murdered her 7-year-old daughter and then committed suicide,the crime committed in the Peabody Hotel,carbolic acid was used,cause of crime was ill health. TUESDAY afternoon,C.G.COURIE,a prominent cotton buyer of the town,killed himself with a pistol on account of financial reverses. A.L.COVINGTON,at one time a clerk and later a policeman in this city,died at his home in south Brownsville at an early hour Saturday morning,after two weeks illness of typhoid fever.He was a member of WoodsMen of the World and was buried in Oakwood by that order on Sunday.He was about 41 years old and a native of this county. JOHN W.HENDERSON,a native of Brownsville,an uncle of Mrs.LINK and father of Mrs.James SEIVER,died at his home in Cedar Rapids,Iowa,on November 8th. THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 41 NO 1 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FRIDAY DECEMBER 11,1908 LOCAL NEWS--BORN,Wednesday morning to Mr.& Mrs.Bate BOND,a fine son. MR.TOM WALKER,of Durhamville,was accidently shot in the face below the eye by Mr.Jack MONTGOMERY,while hunting Thursday of last week.The wound was not serious and he is doing very well.Ripley News,December 4th. THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 41 NO 2 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FRIDAY DECEMBER 18,1908 LOCAL NEWS--JIM COOK,a negro inmate of the county poorhouse was found dead on the farm of Aaron STERNBERGER,which is situated about three miles from town and near the poorhouse,Monday morning by one of Mr.STERNBERGER's tenants.The body was in a small thicket and the negro had been dead about three days.No violence marks found.He was buried by the county. AFTER an illness extending over years,which he bore with the meekness of a christian and the fortitude of a gentleman,the gentle spirit of J.Mat CLARK took its flight,on Wednesday evening last at 5 o'clock.He was born in Corinth,Miss.,sixty years ago and moved to Brownsville some ten years since and married Mrs.Anna HARBERT,who,with a daughter,Mrs.MADDOX,of Somerville and a brother,Ben F.CLARK,of this city and two sisters in Mississippi survive him.
