He leaves part of his estate to the sister of his wife, Dolly Perkins Curlin and to her children Betsy Brown [Elizabeth Curlin Brown], Jackson [Jesse Jackson J. Curlin], William [William Hugh Curlin], and Valentine [John Valentine Curlin]. Dolley Curlin was a widow at the time this will was written. Her other daughter, Sophia Curlin Chandler, was also deceased at this time. He also mentions Georgianna Taylor who lived with the Curlin family. In addition to property, he deems that his Negro man Noah be kept in the Curlin family. The Brown's Creek Church mentioned is the same church that the Curlin family attended. John Bachelor is buried at Ebenezer Cemetery in Mercer, Madison County, Tennessee next to his wife. ************************************************************************ HAYWOOD COUNTY, TN WILL BOOK E, PAGE 161-162 24 JUL 1860 John Bachelor Will I, John Bachelor, of the County of Haywood and State of Tennessee, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, revoking and rendering null and void all wills heretofore by me at any time made by me. 1st: It is my will and desire that all my just debts, including my funeral expenses, to first be paid out of my estate. 2nd: It is my wish and desire that my executors pay over to Rev. George Thomas, present pastor of the Brown's Creek Church, or his successor to the charge of said church, the sum of two hundred dollars in cash, to be paid over by him to "Big Hatchu (Hatcher?) [Big Hatchee] Appreciation" to be applied by that body in such a way as they may think may best promote and advance the rec?? kingdom. 3rd: I wish and desire my executor to put up and ?? at public sale, at thirty days notice, my tract of land known as the Hill Tract, containing one hundred and twenty acres, on one and two years equal installments for the same. 4th: It is my wish and desire that my brother, Alexander Bachelor and his children, Elvira V. Beatty, Thomas W. Bachelor, Patience Midgett, John A.M. Bachelor and Jas. W. Bachelor, also my sister-in-law, Dolly Curlin and her children, Betsy Brown, Jackson Curlin, William Curlin and Valentine Curlin and also Georgianna Taylor, all share equal and alike in the division of my estate. 5th: It is my wish and request that in the division of my estate my Negro woman Mary and her children, Wiley, Elizabeth & Cally remain in the Bachelor family, and Ann & Zion's, that is with Alexander Bachelor or some if his children and that my Negro man Noah be kept in the Curlin family, and if the family of Curlin cannot arrange to keep him among them, then the executor is to select three disinterested men of the county to say what Negros are worth and allot them off so as to sell to his business amicably and satisfactorily. I also wish my executor in paying over to Patience Midgett her portion of my estate to take into consideration a note I hole against Erasmus Midgett and Alexander Bachelor, Security, and have that amount settled as far as her share of the estate will go. I nominate and appoint my friend Hugh M. Clark, my executor to carry out this my last will and testament. Signed, sealed on the 24th July 1860.
