This cemetery is well maintained. This cemetery was recorded December 28, 1995 and checked and updated December 15, 2001. The cemetery was recorded previously by Anita Webb circa 1976 when there were only four burials in the cemetery. Her record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (Memphis, R. H. Harris, 1976), Vol. III, pp. 636. I have been unsuccessful in finding this cemetery on my own. I was told circa 1992 told that the markers are knocked down and broken. Two previous records of this cemetery exist. R. E. White recorded the cemetery circa 1975. His record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (Memphis, R. H. Harris, 1976), Vol. III, p. 635. He describes the location of this cemetery as "East of Scotts Hill-Chesterfield Road, south of Eva Austin's home. Off Scotts Hill-Chesterfield Road, first gravel road to the east then south." This is referred to as White in the notes below. Margarett Alexander recorded the cemetery on April 7, 1977. Although the Chumney Cemetery lies in Henderson County, her record appears in Decatur County, Tennessee Cemetery Records by the Captain Nathaniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, Tennessee, 1984, pp. 112-115. This is referred to as UDC transcription in the notes below. What follows is a composite of information from the two sources. In general, I find the UDC transcription to be the more accurate of the two. For this cemetery it reports far more markers. The information in the composite below comes from the UDC transcription if there are no major discrepancies between the two sources. If there are differences in dates, I list the information from both sources. Brigance, P. H. Eliza Ann, 2/16/1857-2/16/1857, "Infant Dau. of J. R. & L. W. Brigance" Brigance, J. It originated as a Kennedy family cemetery created just after the Civil War but later became a community church cemetery. The adjacent log church, later used as a school, is in ruins. The cemetery is very interesting. The core of the cemetery retains a nineteenth century appearance even though the cemetery is still in use. There are rows of graves marked with fieldstone headstone and footstones. In most nineteenth century cemeteries which are still in use these fieldstones have been removed to make mowing easier. There may be over 100 unmarked and fieldstone marked graves. The cemetery was recorded December 27 and 28, 1995 and updated December 27, 2001. Alicia Adcox, Anita Webb, Betsy Patterson, and Blanch Buck recorded this cemetery circa 1976. Their record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (Memphis, R. H. Harris, 1976), Vol. III, pp. 685-688. This is referred to as Adcox et al. in the notes below. Margarett Alexander and Blanche Tuten recorded this cemetery on March 31, 1976. Although Doe Creek Cemetery lies in Henderson County, their record appears in Decatur County, Tennessee Cemetery Records by the Captain Nathaniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, Tennessee, 1984, pp. 204-210. This is referred to as UDC transcription in the notes below. This cemetery is old. The earliest death date on a marker is in the 1840s, but the cemetery may date to the circa 1820 settlement of the area. (Carved markers generally were not used in this area until the 1870s.) There are many unmarked and fieldstone marked graves here, perhaps over 100. Many older markers are weathered and are unreadable or only can be read in the most favorable lighting. Try sunny winter afternoons when the sun is relative low on the horizon and off to the side. Good light is necessary for reading the older McCollum, Middleton, and White markers. I did not note the date I first recorded this cemetery. It was in 1994, probably was May 16, and it was cloudy and rainy. Updated December 16, 2001, a bright sunny afternoon. Anita Webb, Alicia Adcox, and Blanch Buck recorded this cemetery circa 1975. Their record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (Memphis, R. H. Harris, 1976), Vol. III, pp. 637-640. This earlier record is referred to as "Webb et al." in the notes below. Rushing (b. June 1894), son of Adam Leon Rushing and Alma Irene Montgomery FELLOWSHIP CEMETERY Fellowship Cemetery is located on Austin Chapel Road just north of its intersection with Scotts Hill-Sardis Road. The cemetery is still is use but may be nearly full. This is a very old cemetery which may date to the settlement of the area in the 1820, though a modern replacement marker notes Jonathan Duck to have been the first burial in 1855. At some point in the past someone replaced fieldstones and marked unmarked graves with concrete blocks. This may have been done by the late Gordon Turner (1898-1990) in the 1960. Seventy-eight of these blocks remain. This would be a minimum number for unmarked graves. This cemetery was recorded December 27, 1995 and updated December 16, 2001. Betty Patterson, Anita Webb, Alicia Adcox, and Blanch Buck recorded this cemetery circa 1975. Their record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (Memphis, R. H. Harris, 1976), Vol. III, pp. 661-663. This work is referred to as Patterson et al. in the notes below. Allen, Faustine, 12/29/1903-2/9/1904, "Dau. of G. The entrance drive is between Scotts Hill Church of Christ and a funeral home. It is marked with a sign on state highway 201 which reads: WELCOME Grandsire Holmes Cemetery Dead or Alive At some point in the past, someone (probably Gordon Turner, placed concrete cylinders at all the unmarked graves. There are several dozen of these concrete cylinders. Recorded May 1994. Updated December 2001. Three other records of this cemetery are available. The most interesting in a 1994 mimeographed booklet by Gordon H. Turner titled "The Grandsire Holmes Graveyard." Gordon H. Turner lived on the property adjacent to the cemetery, had several ancestors and many relatives buried there, and had an extensive interest in the people and history of Scotts Hill. His booklet contains a map of the cemetery showing the markers by row and number. A graves directory provides basic name and date information by row and marker number of the people buried in the cemetery. It is followed by a section of biographic and genealogical sketches of many of the people. If one of the people other people known to be buried here is your ancestor, the booklet may provide the grave's location. Turner's booklet served as a basis for the record of this cemetery which appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (Memphis, R. H. Harris, 1976), Vol. III, pp. 641-645. Doris Scott recorded this cemetery in April 1976. Although Grandsire Holmes cemetery lies in Henderson County, her record appears in Decatur County, Tennessee Cemetery Records by the Captain Nathaniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, Tennessee, 1984, pp. 229-233. There are major differences between these works. Doris Scott recorded the markers accurately. Turner did not record the markers per se. His knowledge of this cemetery was much more extensive. His list includes more name and date information than the markers themselves provide, such as maiden names for many of the women. The cemetery was cleared from an overgrown state in the early 1960s in preparation for an Austin family reunion in August 1964. However, the cemetery now seems to be unmaintained. Concrete blocks mark 36 graves around the periphery of the cemetery. If the area in the center is full, the cemetery contains over 100 unmarked graves. A large monument dedicated to the Charles Austin family has been erected in the center of the cemetery. A smaller monument marks the approximate burial location of the Archibald Jones family. A wooden sign erected in 1964 and now partially unreadable marks the entrance to the cemetery. This cemetery was recorded December 28, 1995. Alicia Adcox, Anita Webb, Alicia Adcox, Blanch Buck, and Terry Grice recorded this cemetery circa 1975. Their record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (Memphis: R. H. Harris, 1976), Vol. III, pp. 646. This work is referred to as Adcox et al. in the notes below. The reunion and work on the cemetery is discussed and illustrated in in Gordon Turner's History of Scotts Hill, Tennessee. It is located at Scotts Hill Methodist Church. The cemetery is well maintained, and there is little to no marker loss here except for ordinary marker weathering, which is worst for small marble infant markers. This cemetery was surveyed January 18 and 19, 1992. It was checked and updated November 4 and 6, 2001. Two earlier records are available for this cemetery. Anita Webb and Alicia Adcox recorded this cemetery circa 1975. Their record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (Memphis, R. H. Harris, 1976), Vol. III, pp. 614-630. This earlier work is referred to as "Webb and Adcox" in the notes below. Webb and Adcox noted 35 unmarked graves. Blanche Tuten and Margarett Alexander recorded this cemetery in April 1978. Their record appears in Decatur County, Tennessee Cemetery Records published by the Captain Daniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, Tennessee, 1984. This is referred to as the "UDC transcription" in the notes below.
