Hale WILLIAM ROBERT BOONE. Among the public officials of Houston county whose services have resulted in the material advancement of their community's interests, William Robert Boone holds prominent position. During the past fifteen years he has served as county trustee, where his labors have been appreciated, while his able and conscientious discharge of his duties has gained him the unqualified respect and esteem of his fellow-citizens. He was born in Erin, the city where he now resides, August 13, 1869, and is a son of Etheldred and Martha M. (Turner) Boone. The Boone family has resided in the vicinity of Erin for more than a century of time, having been founded here by the great-grandfather of William Robert Boone, "Uncle Dreddy" Boone, who came from North Carolina in 1804 and settled on Wells creek, two and one-half miles east of Erin. There he took up a large tract of land and spent the remainder of his life in farming, becoming one of his locality's most substantial citizens. He married a Miss Holly, and they had a family of five sons and three daughters. William Boone, son of the pioneer, grew to manhood in Houston county, where he became a prominent farmer, and here was married (first) to Polly Osbrooks, by whom he had five sons and three daughters, Etheldred being the third child in order of birth. After the death of his first wife he married Lytha McCowen, and they had two sons and one daughter. Etheldred Boone was born in 1839 in Houston county, Tennessee, was here educated and reared to manhood, and at the outbreak of the Civil war enlisted in Company B, Fourteenth Eegiment, Tennessee Infantry, serving therewith until the battle of Gettysburg, when he was seriously wounded during Pickett's charge. He was carried back with the army into Virginia, and remained in the hospital at Richmond until the close of the war, and for some time thereafter was compelled to use crutches. On September 17, 1867, Mr. Boone was married at Waverly Landing, Humphreys county, to Martha M. Turner, who was born in that county, September 15, 1850, and they had two children: William Robert and Lura E. After his marriage Mr. Boone was engaged in farming for two years, and then embarked in the mercantile business at Erin, continuing therein until his death, August 5, 1873, which was caused by Asiatic cholera. He was a Democrat in his political views, and was prominent in Masonry, belonging to the lodge, chapter and council at Erin. His widow, who survives him and is engaged in the hotel business at Erin, is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. William Robert Boone received excellent educational advantages, attending the public schools of Houston county, Edgewood Academy, Dickson Normal Academy and the University of Nashville. When fourteen years of age he began to work at railroading and continued to follow this line until he was eighteen years of age, when he lost an arm in an accident and was obliged to turn to other pursuits. For a time he was in the mercantile business, but on his return from the University of Nashville he was made superintendent of public instruction at Erin, for Houston county, a position which he held four years, and in 1898 was elected the trustee of Houston county, an office to which he has been regularly re-elected in each succeeding election. Mr. Boone has interested himself in matters of a business and financial nature, being a director of the Home Telephone Company of Houston county, and a stockholder in the Bank of Erin and the Erin Banking Company. His political belief is that of the Democratic party. Fraternally, he is affiliated with Wisdom Lodge No. 300, A. F. & A. M., at Erin, the Modern Woodmen of America at this place, Erin Lodge No. 382, I. O. O. F., of which he is a charter member, and in which he passed through all the chairs, and Emerald Lodge No. 58. Knights of Pythias, at Erin, in which he has also passed through all the chairs. He is steward of Erin Methodist Episcopal church, South. In 1900 Mr. Boone was married to Miss Lois Uffelman, daughter of J. H. Uffelman, of Erin, a native of Pennsylvania, and seven children were born to this union: Lura Agnes, Dixie, Mamie, Carmack, William Robert, Jr., who died in infancy, Wildred and Lois. Mrs. Boone died July 15, 1911, in the faith of the Methodist Episcopal church, South, and on May 26, 1912, Mr. Boone was married to Elvira Uffelman, the sister of his first wife.
