Hale JAMES W. BRITT. This wide-awake and hustling young editor is a son of the well-known Britt family of Humphreys county—a family founded in this state by James W. Britt, the grandfather of our subject. Virginia was the birthplace of J. W. Britt, Senior, who came at an early period to Tennessee, where he became prominent as a merchant at Buffalo. That business he followed through his life, his death occurring during the Civil war as a result of attacks by bushwhackers early in the conflict. His son, T. W. Britt, born in Buffalo, August 3, 1859, was educated in Hampshire Academy in Murray county. He followed his father's business in Buffalo and was engaged in mercantile enterprises of his own until 1898, at which time he made a change both of location and of occupation. He accepted a position as freight agent for the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railroad at McEwen, where he then took up his residence. Here he has ever since lived and engaged in the employment noted. T. W. Britt is a Democrat in politics; a Mason of Water Valley lodge in Hurricane; and a member of the Methodist church, South, this being also the religious affiliation of his wife. Mrs. Britt was in her girlhood Miss Annie L. Walker of Hickman county, where her birth occurred on March 20, 1864. She became Mrs. T. W. Britt in 1879 and in the subsequent years she and Mr. Britt have become the parents of five children. Miss Etta Britt became Mrs. F. Ridings, of McEwen; her sister, Miss Tommy, married W. B. Shepherd of Nashville; Bessie is Mrs. Leman May of Humphreys county; J. W., the only son, is the special subject of this biographical sketch and the main details of his life are given more extended space below; the youngest sister, Lillian, is still in the parental home. The date of J. W. Britt's birth was June 8, 1892, and the place of his nativity was Buffalo, Humphreys county, Tennessee. His educational institutions were simply those of the public schools, where he made more than usually good use of his opportunities. His vocational interests were those of printing, publishing and editing and took advantage of his earliest opening in learning the printer's trade. His training in this work he gained in the Humphrey's County Herald. This same plant he purchased in 1912. The Herald is a weekly organ of the Democratic party. It enjoys an excellent patronage both as to circulation and advertising. In Mr. Britt's vigorous hands its prospects are for a yet more successful and up-to-date paper. Mr. Britt's political principles are the same as those which his paper espouses. He is a popular member of the Improved Order of Red Men.
