This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Karen Raichle KarenRai@aol.com ===================================================================== Deed Book A Page 171-172 Know all men by these presents that we J A Smallwood and Clara L Smallwood have this day bargained and sold unto Collumbus Mahanay for the considerations of one hundred dollars the Receipt where of is hereby acknowledged our one fifth interest in the following tract or parcel of land lying in Civil District No 1 of Jackson County Tennessee and bounded as follows Beginning on a Sugar tree the South East corner of John H (F)olberts(?) thence Northwardly with the top of the Ridge to William H Botts corner with a marked line to a hickory and two beeches pointers thence down the hill a Straight line to a hickory at or near the branch thence up the branch with its meanders the Mouth of the first Gully thence westwardly Straight up the hill to a large Stump out side of the fence this line is to xxx on the North side of the said Gully thence a Straight line to Asa Pleasants corner a hickory thence to a poplar Oliver Rodgers North West corner on the East of Jones Branch thence to the Beginning to have and to hold the said described tract of land to him the Said Collumbus C Mahanay and his heirs forever We further Covenant with the Said Collumbus C Mahanay that we are lawfully seized of one fifth interest in the above discribed tract of land and have a perfect right to convey the Same of our interest therein which is one fifth We further covenant with the Said Collumbus C Mahanay that we will warrant and forever defend the title to the one fifth interest in above discribed tract of Land against the lawful Claims of all and every person whatever the Land herein discribed is the Same that Was owned by Ransom P Mahanay in his lifetime Test J A. Smallwood and Clara Smallwood with whom I am personally acquainted and who acknowledged that they executed the attached instrument for the purposes therein Contained and Clara L Smallwood having appeared before me privately and apart from her husband the Said J A Smallwood acknowledged the Execution of the Said Deed to have been done by her freely Voluntarily and understandingly without compulsion or constraint from her said husband and for the purposes therein expressed witness my hand at office this 3rd day of Nov 1873 W.
