The following account of the capture of James Warren is taken from The American as sent by the correspondent from this place and is correct as far as we can ascertain. Warren was brought before the court Monday and his trial was set for the next term of circuit court: GAINESBORO, Tenn., July 8. - James Warren, who waylaid and murdered Tip Ransom, about eight miles from here on Sugar Creek, last August, and who has successfully eluded the officers since that time, was brought to town Saturday, and now occupies one of the cells at the jail. His capture was effected by Constable John Cox, of the Sixth District, who will get the $100 reward offered by the Governor soon after the killing. The Constable has been on the lookout for Warren from some time, having heard that he was back in the Sugar Creek country, after a trip to Kentucky and Arkansas. Cox heard also that Warren went once a day to the house of one Moss, his uncle, to get food, and stationing himself near the house before daybreak, he was rewarded by seeing Warren enter the house from the woods about sunrise. Waiting a short while, Cox slipped to the house, and was in the doorway with a pistol in his hand before any one in the house suspected his presence. Warren made a dive under the bed, and the officer followed, pistol in hand, and brought him out, and walked him to Gainesboro, a distance of ten miles. The constable is proud of his capture, as Warren has eluded the vigilance of the officers for nearly a year. -American. ************************************************ CIRCUIT COURT. The case of the State vs J U Carter for the murder of Charley Smallwood, on the night of Dec 1, last, was taken up last week and given to the jury Saturday at noon. The jury was out about two hours, returning with a verdict of murder in the second degree and fixing the punishment at ten years in the penitentiary. A motion for a new trial was over ruled. Monday by Judge Smith and the case was appealed. Carter gave bond for his appearance before the Supreme Court. The action of the State in asking for a continuance in the case of A B Hastend, J M G York and Monroe Germon charged with killing Wm Roberts, would tend to strengthen the impression that the case is not so strong as was thought, as the defense was ready for trial. The case against Wm Henson for killing Henry McBride was set for next term. The Grand Jury is still in session and evidently is doing its duty. ************************************ CLAIMS ALLOWED Following will be found a list of claims allowed by the county court at its July term, 1901; T C Gailbreath, acc't. $36.85 J T West, poor house acc't $204.95 T G Settle, revenue com $30 A K Fox, revenue com $10 B J Rash, revenue com $10 F L Tardy, pub. reports, etc $5 T M Gailbreath; Co atty $12.50 C E Reeves, jail physician $22 J T Anderson, poor house com $3 B B Chaffin, poor house com $3 Frank Richmond, poor house com $3 W A Rash, chairman $37.50 Brandon Printing Co., records 57 cents Foster & Webb, records $156.75 Marshal Bruse & Co, acc't $140. 85 L B Anderson, acct $1.55 McDearman Bros & S. p.h. acc't $159.78 McDearman Bros. & S. w.h. acct $8.90 E O Smith, Sheriiff $131.55 Howell Bros, p.h. acct $2.50 W E Ragland, p.h. acct $$15 W E Ragland, jail acct $7 J W Stamps, p.h. acct $4.50 J M Jordan, expenses for orphan children $60*************** Mrs. Sarah Allen, refund poll $2 Justice per diem, total $71.50 Total allowance, $1150.25 ***************** The $60 allowed J M Jordan was for three orphan children which he took from the poor house and placed under the care of Orphan Home Society, which will provide homes for them.****************** ******************************************************** DOGS REGISTERED.
