Shooting Affray Between John Cox and John Carter. A serious shooting affray occured at the house of Ad Boles' in Clay county, just across the County line, from the 6th district of this county, last Sunday, and as a result John Carter is dead and John Cox has a bullet in his ankle. The difficulty came up, as near as we can understand, over an old grudge which Carter held against Cox. On the day of the shooting both men went to the house of Boles to attend a wedding. When Cox arrived Carter was up stairs and ordered him not to enter the house. Cox paid no attention but went on in and as he entered the house Carter came down stairs drawing his pistol, Cox also drew one and both emptied them at each other. Carter was hit three times -- in the arm, hand and abdomen; Cox was hit once, in the ankle the ball lodging in the bone. Dr. Fowler was sent for and did all in his power for Carter but he died Monday night. Cox is doing resonably well, but he may loose his foot. Carter was a son of Bud Carter of Clay county. Cox is a contable of the 6th district this county and has a reputation of being a quiet, peacable man. From all reports he was justified as it was a cose of kill or get killed. Cox expected more trouble and telephoned for Sheriff Smith, who went to the scene, but nothing more occured. ***************************************** COUNTY AT LARGE.
