The entire town and community was shocked and made sad Sunday morning when Mr S L PATE received a wire that his daughter, MRS CLARA HARGIS, had passed away at 7:00 o'clock Sunday morning, Sept 15th, at her home in Forth Worth, TX. While MRS HARGIS' health had been bad for several years, she was apparently better, and her death came as a great shock to her family and friends. CLARA PATE was born in Jackson Co, grew up and attended school in Gainesboro, where whe was loved by all. She was married to LESLIE HARGIS of Granville, about twenty years ago. To this union three children were born. She was converted in early life and united with the M E Church South. Her entire life was that of a devoted Christian, kind and loving to those whom she came in contact. S L PATE received a telegram Thursday that his daughter, MRS EVA SHICK had passed away at her home in Fort Worth, at 9 o'clock that morning. While MRS SHICK had been in ill health for many years, her death came unexpectedly and was a great shock to her family and many friends. A daughter of S L PATE, she was born and reared in Jackson Co, moving to Gainesboro when a small girl, where she lived until ill health forced her to move to Texas, about 12 years ago. In 1915 she professed faith in Christ and united with the M E Church South, at this place. She was a lovely Christian character, always cheerful and accepted her lot with a sweet Christian spirit. Her kind and gently manner endeared her to all who knew her. SHICK on Easter Sunday in 1932 (evidently missed something-JPL). They had no children (sic). The funeral was held at 10:00 Friday morning at Harveson-Cole, in Fort Worth, TX, the Rev LANGSTON, of Arlington Heights Methodist Church, who officiated at the funeral of her sister, MRS CLARA PATE HARGIS, officiated, and she was laid to rest in a cemetery in that city beside this sister. Besides numerous other realtives and friends are made sad by her passing. MRS MARTHA A PATE (16A.6.4X) Died at her home at Bagdad, Monday, Feb 21st, 1910 after a lingering illness of several months, age 78 years, 8 mos, 9 days. The funeral service was held at the residence Tuesday by Rev PARRISH of the Methodist Church and Rev B S HALL. The remains were interred in the family graveyard near her home. MRS PATE was married in 1857 to HAMPTON PATE to which union was born six children, one girl and five boys, all of whom are living. Her husband died in 1869 leaving her the care of the children, who were small. But being a woman of strong Christian character she assumed the responsibility or rearing her children without a mummer, trusting in God to sustain and support her. She lived to see them all grown and married, except one, and above all Christians, and members of the church she loved so well. Mrs Pate was an every day Christian. The beautifying influences of a pure religion were spread over a life and character as spotless and charming as was ever possessed by any of the noble women who have lived and died during the past ages. As such a life was a blessing and benefaction to all within the sphere of its influence so is the death of such a one a public misfortune as well as an irreparrable loss to the home circle. It is difficult to pay a fitting tribute to the memory of so noble a woman - one whose every day life was embellished by the most charming and lovable attributes of her sex. A perfect lady at all times - under all circumstances, she seemed born to inspire the love and respect of all who were so fortunate as to be acquainted with her. No one was more willing to aid the suffering, cheer the desponding, sustain the weak and to throw over the frailties of our race the mantle of Christian charity. In the presence of such sorrow, how cold and impotent are words and how doubly deep would be the grief over the grave did not the rainbow of Christian hope span the dark gulf between time and eternity, and such pure, bright lives inspire the belief that there is a better world beyond, where, filled from the corroding cares of earth, the good and true reunited "after life's fitful fever." Mrs Pate is survived by her children: MRS BETTIE HARDCASTLE of Nashville, MESSRS E, S L, O H, E B and H T PATE, of this county; two sisters Mesdames LETHA TITTLE and SUSAN PRUITT, of this county; and two brothers, MATTHEW HOLLEMAN, of Granville, and T J HOLLEMAN, of Smith Co.
