This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Cay Merryman caym@infowest.com ==================================================================== Jefferson County Tennessee Deeds - Book V (or U) JESSE RIGGS and THOMAS ECKLES and others - Deed to PETER HARRISON Registered August 4, 1837 Know all men by these presents that whereas heretofore (to wit) about the 10th or 12th of September in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty three JOHN RIGGS of Jefferson County in the state of Tennessee departed this life in said county seized and possessed of one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in said county on the north side of the French Broad river adjoining the lands of William Graham Elias Hickman and others bounded as herein after described and whereas at his decease he the said JOHN RIGGS left the following children and heirs at law to wit ELIAS RIGGS, ISAIAH RIGGS, RHODA WESTER, NINIAN RIGGS, JESSE RIGGS, CASANDER GRAVES, ACHSAH THOMAS, NANCY KEEN, ASARIAH RIGGS, CLOE PEARMAN AND ARABELLA ECKLES and a surviving widow to inherit said tract of land. Now know ye that we of the heirs last before named (to wit) POLLY RIGGS, the widow, of the county of Jefferson and state aforesaid and NINIAN RIGGS of Grainger County, JESSE RIGGS and NANCY KEEN and ELI KEEN her husband of the said county of Grainger and all of the state of Tennessee and ASARIAH RIGGS and ARABELLA ECKLES and THOMAS G. ECKLES her husband all three of the county of Jefferson and state of Tennessee for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and thirty five dollars to us in hand paid by PETER HARRISON the receipt whereof we do hereby acknowledge have granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain sell and confirm unto PETER HARRISON of the county of Jefferson and state of Tennessee his heirs executors and administrators forever all that tract or messuage of land of which JOHN RIGGS late of said county of Jefferson was seized and possessed at the time of his decease lying and being in the county of Jefferson and state of Tennessee situate on the north side of French Broad river adjoining the lands of William Graham and others beginning at two white oaks on the north bank of said river then south eighty four degrees west one hundred and forty poles to two black oaks then north thirty one poles to a poplar then north forty six degrees east one hundred and eight poles to a black oak and chesnut then south sixty seven degrees east fifty four poles to a hickory at the mouth of a branch on the bank of said river then down the river with its meanders to the beginning containing fifty acres of land be the same more or less with the appurtenances and all the estate right title interest property and claim of them the said POLLY RIGGS (widow) and NINIAN RIGGS, NANCY KEEN and ELI KEEN her husband and JESSE RIGGS and ASARIAH RIGGS and ARABELLA ECKLES and THOMAS G. ECKLES her husband of in to upon the same to have and to hold the land hereby conveyed with all and singular the premises and every part thereof with the appurtenances unto the said Peter Harrison his heirs and assigns forever and the said POLLY RIGGS, NINIAN RIGGS, JESSE RIGGS, NANCY KEEN and ELI KEEN her husband, ASARIAH RIGGS and ARABELLA ECKLES and THOMAS G. ECKLES her husband for themselves their heirs executors and administrators doth convenant promise and agree to and with the said PETER HARRISON his heirs and assigns by them presents that the premises before mentioned now and forever hereafter shall remain free from all former and other gifts grants bargains sales charges incumberances whatsoever done or suffered to be done by the said POLLY RIGS, NINIAN RIGGS, JESSE RIGGS, NANCY KEEN and ELI KEEN her husband, ASARIAH RIGGS, ARABELLA ECKLES and THOMAS G. ECKLES her husband and their heirs and all and every other person or persons whatsoever doth and will warrant and forever defend by these presents. In witness whereof the said POLLY RIGGS, NINIAN RIGGS, JESSE RIGGS, NANCY KEEN and ELI KEEN her husband and ASARIAH RIGGS, ARABELLA ECKLES and THOMAS G. Signed, dated and delivered in presence of us William Graham Elias Hickman State of Tennessee Jefferson County A deed of conveyance from Polly Riggs, Ninian Riggs, Jesse Riggs, Nancy Keen, Eli Keen, Azariah Riggs, Arabella Eckles and Thomas G. Eckles....To Peter Harrison for fifty acres of land lying and being in the county of Jefferson on the north side of French Broad river adjoining the lands of William Graham and others bearing date the 4 November 1834 was presented before me Joseph Hamilton Clerk of the County Court of Jefferson for probate and thereupon came William Graham and Elias Hickman the subscribing witnesses to the same who being duly sworn, deposed and say they are personally acquainted with Polly Riggs, Ninian Riggs, Jesse Riggs, Nancy Keen and Eli Keen, Azariah Riggs, Arabella Eckles and Thomas G. Eckles the bargainers and that they saw them sign seal and execute the same upon the day it bears date.
