He was born June 3, 1760. He enlisted in August, 1777, in Virginia, under Captain Mims, Lieut. Francis Mims and Colonel Richard Parker, in the Virginia Continental Line, commanded by General Mullenberg. He was discharged after eighteen months' service, at Middlebrook, N. J. He served in the battles of Monmouth, Guilford Court House and Yorktown. He stated that his first wife died and that his second wife, named Elizabeth, was alive in 1830. By both wives he had sixteen children, ten by the first wife and six by the second wife. In 1830 they were all alive, but one. John aged 42 years, William aged 40 years, Elisha aged 38 years, Betsey aged 36 years, Susanna, aged 34 years, David aged 32 years, Peggy aged 30 years, Andrew aged 28 years, Mahala aged 36 [sic] years, Casper aged 24 years, children of the first wife were married and settled in different counties and states, none in Jefferson County. By the second wife the living children were: Matilda aged 14 years, "who is a perfect idiot," Sarah aged 12 years, Polly aged 10 years, Rachel aged 8 years and Thomas Jackson aged 6 years. He stated that he had one cow, two beds and furniture, one ax, one pot, one oven, one half dozen knives and forks, one skillet, one table, one half dozen plates, six tin cups, two pails, one hoe. Elizabeth Sharp, widow of William Sharp, applied for widow's pension in Greene County, February 28, 1853. She married the soldier October 25, 1815, in Greene County. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Massey. William Sharp died December 17, 1842. Note:- This list of possessions is given here as it forms an illustration of the financial status of hundreds of early pensioners of the revolutionary war.
