He was born in Virginia in 1746. He volunteered, under Captain Richard Pollard, Colonel Andrew Williamson, and Major Andrew Pickens. He participated in the Snow Campaign. He aided in the capture and hanging of Tory Captain Linley; he served in the Indian attack at Phillips Fort, Georgia, and served with Colonel William Henderson in the Siege of 96.
