J. SAWYERS, deposes a statement on behalf of my gg-grandfather David Tate TRAVIS and their activities in the Civil War. State of Tennessee Jefferson Co. Personally appears before me, J.H. Bundren, Notary Public, in and for said County and State, A. J. SAWYERS, to me well known, and after being duly sworn deposes and says: That he (A.J. SAWYERS) was in the Confederate Army, and belonged to CO. I, 31st, Tenn., and that he and David T. TRAVIS, enlisted together at Rogersville, Tennessee, during the Autumn of 1863, and about 12 month's later was captured at Rogersville, Tennessee, and both he and David T. TRAVIS were taken to Atlanta, Ga., to be exchanged as Prisoners of War, and that he (A. J. SAWYERS) was exchanged at Atlanta, Ga., and David T. TRAVIS was not (reached? OR recorded? ) on the roll call of the 500 prisoners exchanged, and we were separated there. I (A.J. SAWYERS) was coming back home and David T. TRAVIS going on to Prison. This was the Autumn of 1864, and David T. TRAVIS was regularly in CO. I, 31st, Tenn., from the time we enlisted at Rogersville, Tenn., during the Autumn of 1863 till I was exchanged at Atlanta, Ga., during the Autumn of 1864 as stated above. Also, comes Robert PIERCE, who after being duly sworn, states that he was also a member of CO. I, 31st, Tenn., and that he was in the same Company, and Regiment, that is CO. I, 31st, Tenn., with David T. TRAVIS during the Autumn of 1863, at Rogersville, Tennessee. Signed: A.J. SAWYERS (his mark) Robert PIERCE Sworn to and subscribed before me, Aug. 19, 1907. (NOTE: Robert PIERCE above was the brother of Nancy Adaline PIERCE....who later became the wife of David Tate TRAVIS above. They resided at RR2, Talbott, TN. for many years.
