The original paintings were created circa 1835. (The original portrait of Mary has her in a Black dress.) The portraits are owned by Hugh Willcox, Jr. of Florence, SC., great-great-grandson of Jacob Pate Chase, great-grandson of Jerome P. Chase. "About 40 years ago my father borrowed the portraits and had them reproduced and these are now in my mothers home in Columbia, SC." - Steve Chase, Chapin, SC. _______________ Jacob Pate Chase, the son of Obediah and Lovecia Pate Chase, was born November 04, 1801 in Abingdon, Virginia, and he died November 14, 1861 in Warrenton, Fauquier County, Virginia. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Bowen on May 17, 1836 in Waterloo, SC by Rev. Mitchell; she was the daughter of George Bowen and Maria Conant. Mary was born November 25, 1817 in Waterloo, SC, and died October 17, 1883 in Atlanta, GA. Notes for JACOB PATE CHASE: General in the Tennessee Militia. Tennessee House, 20th General Assembly, 1833-1835, representing Campbell, Claiborne, Grainger, and Jefferson counties. Extent of schooling is unknown; Representative Chase was one of the first settlers of Tuckertown (now New Market), Jefferson County; operated the firm known as Jacob Chase & Co. He held the following offices in Jefferson County: school commissioner, 1824; justice of the peace; tax collector. Jacob and Mary Chase were the parents of the following children: (1) George Napoleon Chase Born- May 13, 1837 in Jefferson Co, TN., Died- April 17, 1865 in Alleghaney County, VA. Married- Mary Chester McConnell on February 04, 1861 in Washington, D.C. Civil War Veteran. (2) Jerome Pressley Chase Born- July 28, 1838 in New Market, Jefferson Co, TN., Died- October 27, 1916 in Florence, SC. Married- Hattie Gary McCleod on October 18, 1866 in Manning, SC. Civil War Veteran. First Mayor of Florence, SC. He was also a member of the S.C House of Representatives. In 1859 Jerome P.Chase, a telegraph operator arrived in Florence and became successful selling insurance and real estate and he became known as the Father of Florence. He was the Secretary & Treasurer of the Cheraw & Salisbury Railroad Company in the early 1870's. He formed The Florence Brick, Tile and Manufacturing Company, in February 1890. He managed the Florence Improvement and Manufacturing Company, which provided the first electricity for the city. The firm also established the first ice factory in the city as well as running an iron foundry. (3) Charles Carroll Chase Born- September 18, 1839 in Waterloo, SC., Died- October 02, 1914 in Atlanta, GA. Married- Maria Pool on February 13, 1866 in Greenville, SC. Charles worked in the U.S. Patent office when the Civil War began. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at Bull Run, Virginia on May 24, 1861 with Company B (Butler Guards), 2nd South Carolina Infantry, 2nd. Palmetto Regiment and later served in the Signal Corps with the Army of Northern Virginia. After the war he entered the hotel business and operated the Newberry Hotel in Newberry, South Carolina for several years prior to moving to Spartanburg, South Carolina on March 15, 1879 where he operated the new Grand Central Hotel on the city square. He later founded C. C. Chase & Co., a real estate and insurance firm in Spartanburg, SC. (4) Josephine Pauline Chase Born- December 02, 1840 in New Market, Jefferson Co, TN. Died- November 16, 1841 in Waterloo, SC. (5) Hugh Lawson White Chase Born- January 05, 1842 in Waterloo, SC., Died- December 14, 1888 in Waynseboro, VA. Married, 1st Sophie Clifford Maxwell on March 24, 1873 in Savannah, GA.; 2nd Caroline Elizabeth Withrow on October 26, 1881 in Waynesboro, VA. Civil War Veteran. Worked for the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad, Company. (6) Irvine Keith Chase Born- November 13, 1843 Waterloo, SC., Died- December 30, 1914 in Nashville, TN. Married- Isabella Watkins Taylor on January 11, 1864 in Richmond, VA. Veteran of the Civil War in both the Southern Army and Navy. "A pioneer insurance underwriter of Nashville, and for thirty years one of the best known insurance men in this section of the country." (7) Mary Louise Chase Born- January 21, 1845 in Waterloo, SC., Died- October 16, 1847 in Waterloo, SC. (8) John Pate Chase Born- November 21, 1846 in Charleston, SC., Died- July 21, 1876 in Florence, SC. Married- Maria Bacot Brunson on March 27, 1867 in Florence, SC. Civil War Veteran. Worked for the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad, Co. (9) Medora Ella Chase Born- December 02, 1848 in Charleston, SC., Died- April 23, 1868 in Florence, SC. Married- J. DeWitt McCall on October 22, 1867 in Florence, SC. (10) Antoinette Chase Born- March 28, 1850 in Washington, D.C., Died- May 01, 1909 in Chicago, IL. Married- Dr. William Robinson Burgess on February 15, 1875 in Orange Co., FL. (11) Carolina Chase Born- April 06, 1853 in Washington, D.C., Died- September 15, 1855 in Washington, D.C. (12) William Choice Chase Born- August 23 1854 in Washington, D.C., Died- March 14, 1937 in Atlanta, GA. Married- 1st Ida May Nichols on December 01, 1875 in Marietta, GA.; 2nd Julia A. James on October 24, 1883 in Baltimore, MD. Founded the Inter-Southern Life Insurance Company, Louisville, KY. (13) Eugene Bowen Chase Born- April 04, 1857 in Washington, D.C., Died- October 18, 1927 in Washington, D.C. Married- Isabel Vernon Smith on September 04, 1879 in Spartanburg, SC. Worked for the Southern Railroad for 42 years.
