Lum is Cristopher Columbus Austin, son of William H. Potter and his wife Emily Rebecca Trivette Austin. Bertha was his wife, and my grandmother Emily Bertha Potter Austin. I saw her sisters Lizzie and Debtless (sp?) dip snuff and spit into coffee tins strategically placed around Aunt Lizzie's house when I visited Poga years ago with my grandmother. I had never seen anyone dip snuff before and I asked my granny Bertha Austin if she had ever done this, as well. She said "Certainly not - it's nasty and disgusting." I don't think the letter proves that she also dipped snuff. It may instead have been my grandfather's way of tweaking her about her sisters' habit. Danel was Bertha's father, Daniel D. Potter. He served in the Johnson County Sheriff's Department. In the conduct of his duties, he killed Gar Church, who I believe is James A. Garfield Church.
