JOHNSON COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Asa Grant Bunton, 15 Dec 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Mr. Asa Grant Bunton, 75, Cowan Town Road, Butler, died Wednesday, December 15, 2004 in the V.A. Medical Center, Salisbury, N.C. following a lengthy illness. A native of Johnson County, he was the son of the late Frank Conard and Pearl Burton Bunton. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and Milligan College and received his master's degree from East Tennessee State University. He was a chemistry and physics teacher and also worked in contracting and electrical construction. He was a member of Doe River Baptist Church and attended Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church where he had served as Sunday school superintendent and also taught the men's Bible class. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, the Sullivan County Republican Party and was a U.S. Army Veteran where he served in the Quarter Master Corp during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Phyllis Bunton and two brothers, Dwight Bunton and Scott Bunton. Survivors include two daughters, Cathy Alesa Bunton, Johnson City and Lois B. Shults-Davis, Unicoi; two sisters, Martha B. Query, Unicoi, and Elma Ruth Stanton, Butler; a brother, Raymond Bunton, Tallahassee, Fla.; three grandsons, K.G. Shults, Joseph D. Shults and Lawrence Scott Shults, all of Unicoi; a niece, Debbie Mims, of Georgia and three nephews, Scotty Jack Bunton, Elizabethton; Gregg Bunton and Dean Bunton, both of Florida. Funeral services for Mr. Asa Grant Bunton will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 19, 2004 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Music will be provided by Mr. Jerry Barnett and Mr. K. G. Shults. Burial will follow the funeral service in the Sugar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons, nephews, sons-in-law and a cousin, Walter McGuire. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church and of Doe River Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday or at the residence of a daughter, Lois B. Shults-Davis, 314 Greenbriar Dr., Unicoi, at any time. In lieu of flowers, to those who desire, memorials may be made to the Volunteer Services, Patient Activity Fund, Salisbury V.A.
