Courtner Howard Smith Courtner, 79, of Johnson City, passed away Monday, December 10, 2007, at North Side Hospital. A native of Butler, he was a son of the late Robert Allen and Mattie Neatherly Courtner. Mr. Courtner was a 1947 graduate of Watauga Academy. He formerly worked at ET&WNC Truck Line. He operated Courtner's Ham House from 1980 to 1995 and presently was employed by the Johnson County Board of Education as an assistant teacher at Doe Elementary School. Mr. Courtner was a member of Butler Baptist Church. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was a lifetime member of Roan Creek Masonic Lodge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Courtner, and two sisters, Chloe Lipford and Vernell Cable Boling. Survivors include his wife, Martha Dugger Courtner; two sisters, Frances Courtner and Lucille Cardwell, both of Butler; and a brother, Robert Earl Courtner, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Courtner will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday, December 12, at Butler Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Garland, the Rev. Ronnie Manuel and the Rev. Bill Durham officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 13, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Michael Lowe, Steve Courtner, Eric Durham, Fred Renfro, Chris Brumit and Joey Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Grindstaff, James Thompson, Ben Edwards, Jerry Brumit, Claude Woods, David Markland and the Young Adult Sunday School Class of Butler Baptist Church. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the staff of North Side Hospital, Dr. Phillip Jones and Dr. W.A.E. Shams. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Butler Baptist Church. Friends may also call at the residence.
