Nikazy Vera Lee Sheets Nikazy, 88, 155 Price Road, Elizabethton, died Monday Oct. 16, 2006, in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was a loving and devoted mother and wife. A sixth generation Tennessean, born Dec. 15, 1917, in Johnson County, the daughter of the late Walter Ollar and Martha Elizabeth Tester Sheets. She and her late husband, Edward Nikazy, celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary prior to Edward's death in 1989. She was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. She resided briefly at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. From 2002 through September 2006, she lived at the Pine Oaks Assisted Living Facility in Johnson City. From 1946 through 1960, she and her family made their home in Carter County. In 1961, the family moved to Kissimmee, Florida. In 1982, the family returned to Carter County. She was a member of the Hunter First Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Helen Kieper, Gray, and Irene and Raymond Smith, Elizabethton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie and Peggy Nikazy, Hendersonville, Calvin and Jonni Nikazy, Jacksonville, Fla., and Steven and Sherri Nikazy, Philadelphia, Pa. In addition, she was the loving grandmother of nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Faye Sheets, Hickory, N.C.; sister, Ellarose Barney, Mountain City; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Eric Eggers, Dr. Dennis Deese and the eulogy by her son, Steven. Graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Mountain City. Music will be provided by Bob Moore, soloist, and Sandra Grindstaff, pianist. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Thursday, will be the following grandsons, Christopher Nikazy, Randy Smith, Brian Caskey, Chad Nikazy, Jamie Caskey, Cpl. Lance Hill, nephew, and Dwayne Jewel. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Smith, Dr. Mark Chang, Dr. David Fenner, Lorenzo Serna and Dr. Bendfelt. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at her residence. For those who prefer, memorials may be made in memory of Mrs. Nikazy to the Alzheimer's Association of Northeast Tennessee, 207 N. Boone Street, Suite 1500, Johnson City, TN 37604.
