Smith Fred W. "Pup" Smith, 90, of Elizabethton, Stoney Creek Community, died Saturday, May 26, 2007, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late Daniel and Susie Simpson Smith. Mr. Smith had lived most of his life in Carter County. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation after 50 years of service and was also employed by the First Utility District for 20 years. He was a member of Unaka Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Millie Frances Peters Smith, November 9, 2003, and two sons, Eugene and Wayne Smith. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and A.D. "Sonny" Fletcher of Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Mary Smith of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three sisters, Hazel Cress and Ruth Payne, both of Mountain City, and Anna Beth Finner of Ohio; a brother, Paul Smith of Ohio; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and his three special "little friends," Triston and Ireland Winchester and Ashlynne Cook. Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Walker Roberson officiating. A eulogy will be given by Victor DeLoach. Music will be provided by the New Liberty Trio. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, will be Victor DeLoach, Dennis Ornduff, Cameron Gentry, Raymond Cress, Gary Arnold and Tom Payne. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Hardin, Bob Ellis, Bill Gentry, Paul Hopson, Bobby Joe Fletcher and employees of the former North American Rayon Corporation.
