Hale DR. BROWN AYRES. The president of The University of Tennessee is a native of Memphis, and his distinguished career in the field of education has reflected additional honor upon a state already noted for the character and services of its sons in many departments of the world's work. Dr. Brown Ayres was born at Memphis, May 25, 1856. His early advantages were the very best that American institutions of learning can offer. He was a student of Washington and Lee University in Virginia, the Stevens Institute of Technology at Hoboken, New Jersey, and the Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore. He was graduated from Stevens Institute with the Bachelor of Science degree in 1878, and was awarded his Ph. D. in 1888. From 1880 to 1904 he was a professor, dean and vice chairman of Tulane University, New Orleans, and left that institution to accept the presidency of The University of Tennessee. Dr. Ayres has received many scholastic and university honors. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; is a member of the American Physical Society, and of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education. He was president of the Association of Colleges and Preparatory Schools in the Southern states in 1905, and in 1910 president of the National Association of State Universities. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi and the fraternity of Delta Psi. The Washington and Lee University, Tulane University, the University of South Carolina and the University of Alabama have each honored him with the degree of LL. D., and the University of the South made him D. C. L. Dr. Ayres was a member of the jury of awards at the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, the Tennessee Centennial of 1897, and the Atlanta Cotton Exposition of 1905. Dr. Ayres was one of three children born to Samuel Warren and Elizabeth Little (Cook) Ayres, his father having been one of the leading lawyers of Memphis. The paternal grandparents were Isaac and Mary Furman (Smith) Ayres, of Elkton, Kentucky, and the maternal grandparents, William Arthur and Catherine Stewart (Brown) Cook of Nashville. Dr. Ayres was married July 5, 1881, to Miss Katie Allen Anderson, of Lexington, Virginia.
