Note that what was called the great road is now named Emory Rd. This property is/was in the area off Emory Road near where it connects with the east loop of Beeler Loop Road. Although the name Major was sometimes spelled with an "S" in the Knox Co. records, the surname was actually Major (without the "S"). Major without the "S" was French Huguenot; Majors with the "S" was English. Part of the confusion came from both of these families living in the same general area of Knox County. A Deed of Conveyance Smith Major To William Major This indenture made this 8th day of March 1838 between Smith Major of the County of Knox and State of Tennessee of the one part and William Major(s) of the County & State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said Smith Major(s) for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred dollars to him in hand paid the receipt of whereof is hereby acknowledged hath and by these presents doth bargain and sell, set over and confirm unto the said William Major(s) a certain tract of land containing one hundred and eleven (111) acres, lying in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee on the waters of Beaver Dam Creek beginning at a rock set in the ground on the line of his former survey thence south 55 west 76 polls to a small white oak at the end of the lane thence south 73 west 80 polls to a stake near a marked pine thence north 17 west 40 pols to a stake between two marked post oaks on a line of the 40 acres survey thence south 40 west 47 polls more or less to a post oak and dogwood thence north 46 west 27 polls to a corner near the side of the Great Road thence north with the Cumberland Trace to Donaldsons middle line thence south 46 east 100 polls more or less to the beginning stone corner with all its hereditaments and appurtinances unto the said William Major and his heirs and assigns forever. By these presents as an indefensible inheritance in fee simple against the claim and demand of him the said Smith Major(s) his heirs and etc. and the claim and demand of all and every person or persons whatsoever in testimony whereof said Smith Major(s) hereunto set his hand and seal the day and year first above written.
