Special Commissioner Washington, D.C. Dear Sir: Replying to your favor of the 21st, beg to say, through my attorney Henry Swan, Jr. of Bristol, Tenn. I have given all the information I have regarding my claim to a share in Cherokee fund. In regard to why my parents and grand-parents were not enrolled beg to say, they were slave holders, and I suppose at that time the Government had no appropriation for the descendants of the Cherokee Indians. Kindly go over the information furnished by Mr. Swan and inform me if there is anything more definite you desire. Maggie Campbell being first duly sworn, deposes to say: That I am 50 years of age and live in Knox Co., Tenn. I was born in Va., southwestern part. Beulah McCammon is a niece of mine, being a daughter of my brother Dr. Campbell. My brother's wife is white. I claim through my father's side. My mother was a white woman. My father was born in Smyth Co., Va. He was raised there. He died a few years after the war. He never lived with the Indians as a member of the tribe. My great great grandmother was a full blooded indian and married Thomas Mitchell and lived in Philadelphia. My father and none of my ancestors were never on any roll. I never was married.
