Private, Company K, 2nd Tennessee Volunteers. Widow: Martha E. Hickey, Widow's Claim # 105466 On June 22, 1867 Martha Hickey, age 35 years, appeared before the court in Knox County, Tennessee to apply for a pension on the service of her late husband, Thomas Hickey. She was a resident of Knox County, Tennessee. Address: Box 74, Knoxville, Tennessee. She stated that she had the following children under the age of 16 years: David H. Hickey b. 23 Feb 1838 Wm. R. Hickey b. 1 April 1859 Joseph H. Hickey b. 29 Dec. 1861 Edward T. Hickey b. 27 Apr 1862 Samuel C. Hickey b. 2 June 1864 Thomas Hickey was enrolled on 9 Jan 1862 at Malvern, VA in Co. K, 2nd Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers to serve three years. He served under Colonel Samuel Carter. He was mustered in as a private at Somerset, KY. On the muster roll dated Dec. 15, 1864 he was reported a prisoner of war, captured at Rogersville, Tennessee November 6, 1863. He died at Andersonville, GA on May 8, 1864 of dysentery. There is a guardian's application and declaration in the packet by Elijah P. Pedigo requesting guardianship of the children of Thomas and Martha E. Hickey upon the death of Martha Hickey in Knox County, Tennessee on 9 August 1878. This application was witnessed by James Hilton and R.M. Brown who state Awe have lived near neighbors to all of them since the war closed. Elijah Pedigo requested guardianship of William R., Joseph, Edward and Samuel C. on 9 November 1878. They also state that they know that Samuel C. Hickey, minor child of Thomas and Martha is living and that they know Martha died because they saw her dead body and attended her funeral in Knox County, Tennessee. The widow's application states that she and Thomas were married in Knox County, Tennessee on 27 November 1856 by Isaac Hinds, a minister of the Gospel. Her maiden name before her marriage was Martha E. Eddington. Martha could not read or write and all the papers that she certified were marked with her X. There are additional papers explaining discrepancies in dates that were reported and other witnesses who vouched for her marriage to Thomas Hickey and that the children belonged to both of them. Mary Cunningham and Nancy Giffin, residents of Knox County stated that the births of the children are from personal knowledge and that there is no baptismal or other public record of said births available. Pension was awarded at the rate of $8 per month plus $2 per month for each child under the age of 16 years.
