William Joseph Hickey applied in 1879 for pension relating to his duty as a Private in Company E of the 3rd Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry commanded by Captain Chas. Coker. His personal description at the time of application stated that he was 37 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, dark complexion, brown hair, gray eyes. He stated that he was captured by the Rebels and sent to Andersonville, GA. While captured there he incurred a rupture of his left side caused by lifting a heavy log for firewood. He stated his occupation was that of a farmer. His post office address was Knoxville, Tennessee. There is a signed statement from the county clerk of Knox county certifying his marriage to Caroline Burnett on 9 August 1868. C. M. Monday and W. R. Hickey issued a statement that William Joseph Hickey died on 7 December 1901. They attended his funeral and said that they have lived close neighbors with the soldier and his widow for 30 years. His death resulted from an operation for relief of strangulated left inguinal hernia. Caroline Hickey applied on 4 January 1902 for a widow's pension. Her stated age was 51 years. S.E. Burnett, age 47 years and E.B. Burnett, age 55 years both of Shooks, Knox County said that they had lived within two miles of the claimant all of their lives and certified that the soldier and widow were never divorced, that they had neither one been previously married and that the widow had not remarried. At the time of her application there were no children under the age of 16 years. Pension was approved at the rate of $4 per month from 1865 to 1884. It was raised to $8 per month in 1884 and then raised to $12 per month in 1890. He was approved for left inguinal hernia and not approved for rheumatism that he says he contracted in winter 1863. He was also rejected for hernia of right side. A letter from D. T. Hickey, son of Caroline Hickey, was written on 9 May 1923 stating that his mother had been drawing a pension of $30 per month. He stated that he had nursed her and buried her and wanted to secure what money is coming to her between April 4, 1923 and the date of her death, April 27, 1923. Caroline died from pneumonia and paralysis. She had no property except for one cow, very old, valued at $20. Caroline Hickey was buried in the New Hopewell Cemetery. She died at Neuberts, Tennessee, Route 1. Dr. Wardell was her physician and James Burnett was the undertaker for her burial.
