KNOX COUNTY, TN - MILITARY - Cornelius Hickey, Civil War Pension Application --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Knox Co, TN Civil War Invalid Pension Application Abstract Civil War Union Pension Cornelius Hickey Certificate 820307 Cornelius was a corporal in Company "C" Second Tennessee Cavalry. His application was filed 29 November 1892. He filed from Knox County, Tennessee and stated that he had lived there all his life. Cornelius was born in Knox County, Tennessee on 12 March 1829 at Third Creek. He died 18 May 1915 in Knoxville and was buried in the Third Creek Cemetery where "his grandfather gave the site and reserved a portion of it for his relatives". His wife and children are also buried there. Cornelius was married on 9 September 1852 at Black Oak Ridge by Reverend C.W. Charlton, a Methodist minister. He married Mary Ann Reynolds. There was a letter in this packet from W.A. Hickey who was a son of Cornelius Hickey. Also included is a letter from Retta Hickey, wife of W.A. Hickey asking for possible compensation from the pension board for nursing her father-in-law. The basis of the claim for disability was that in the line of duty near Decatur, Alabama in July 1864 he incurred partial deafness. Also, in August of 1864 he had an injury to his back from falling off his horse while in action. One document in the packet stated that he was 83 years old, 6 ft. tall with fair complexion, gray eyes and dark hair. He listed his occupation as a farmer.
