He was born in County Antrim, Ireland, in 1754. His father and family came to America, landing in Baltimore when he was about 18 years old or a little before. They lived in Maryland one year, moved to Pennsylvania, where they lived a year and moved to Sullivan County, now Sullivan County, Tenn. John Adair lived there during the Revolution and enlisted in companies serving against the Indians who were commanded by Chief Logan. He enlisted again in 1777 or 1778 in Capt. George Brooks' company. He volunteered the following spring under Capt. James Elliott and in the following spring, when his father was drafted, substituted for him in Capt. Samuel Brashear's company. In 1791 he moved to what is now Knox County, Tenn. He lived fourteen years in the Tennessee country, before removing to Kentucky.
