He served in Virginia Troops under command of his brother, Captain William Bowen, and Captain John Campbell. He served in the battle of King's Mountain under Captain William Edmondson, Colonel William Campbell and Colonel Benjamin Cleveland. His brother, Reece Bowen, was killed in the battle of King's Mountain. Charles Bowen was given a Captain's commission by Governor Beverly Randolph.
