He was born September 15, 1760, in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, where he lived only a few years and then moved to Augusta County, Virginia. The names of his parents are not given in his pension application. While residing in Augusta County he volunteered in the latter part of the summer or early in the fall of 1780 and served six months as a private in the company of Captain Thomas Smith, Colonel Campbell's regiment After the Revolution he moved to what is now Tennessee country and lived for a year in Sullivan County and then to Knox County where he drew pension.
