GIBSON, PIONEER OF KNOX AREA DIES AT 97 WALKED OVER MOUNTAINS Mrs. W.E. Gibson, who walked from Maryville to Robbinsville, NC with her young husband more then 80 years ago, died Thurs night at her home on Hall Rd off Maryville Pike, at 97. Martha Jane Pace and W.E. Gibson were married when she was 14. It wasn't on their honeymoon, but not long after, that the young pair broke their own trail the 100 miles over the mountains to Robbinsville. They killed one rattler but bears and "painters" didn't bother them. There are now 130 descendants of 4 generations, as a result of that union. Mr. Gibson always a farmer, died in 1930 at 68. They established the Hall Rd home some 60 years ago and Grandma Gibson, as she was called, had never left it. The daughters, Mrs R.C. Wilson and Mrs. W.J. Rule, have helped look after the mother,and there has been a housekeeper in late years. The living descendants are the daughters; two sons, Charles A and R.T. Gibson and 33 grandchildren and 42 g grandchildren. "On the Robbinsville stay, my parents lived with her relatives and made two crops", said Mrs. Wilson, the daughter yesterday. "When they got back, they were proud owners of a milk cow". "Mother's early childhood was in the Sugarloaf Mountain vicinity of Sevier Co. She vividly remembered seeing line of Cherokees file across the mountain, possessing only what they could carry on their backs". The eldest living Gibson chld is Charles A., 75 and the baby is Mrs. Rule, 63 this month. Services for the mother will be held at 2 PM tomorrow at the New Salem Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church before the funeral.
