He was a member of Bearden United Methodist Church. He was professor emeritus at the University of Tennessee where he taught physical chemistry. He retired in 1984 from Oak Ridge National Laboratory where he worked as chemical research group leader. He receive a Presidential Commendation in 1945 for his work and accomplishment on the Manhattan Project from President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was a recipient of numerous awards and commendations. He received his B.A. from Colgate University, Phi Beta Kappa, 1942, his M.S. in 1944 and his Ph.D in 1948 from the University of Wisconsin. He was a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists. Surviving are his wife, Jean Hawkins Lietzke; daughters, Kathryn Ann Keel, Carol Lynn Scialli, both of Jacksonville, Fla., Cindy L. Edens of West Hills, Calif., and Lindl L. Hubbard of Anchorage, Alaska; son, Milton H. Lietzke Jr. of Bristol Virginia; brother, Donald Leitzke of Richmond; eight granddaughters; one grandson; and two great-grandsons. Funeral service will be Saturday in Knoxville. Memorial donations may be sent to Alzheimer's Association, Eastern Tennessee Chapter, 2200 Sutherland Ave., Portland Building, Suite H 102, Knoxville, TN 37919.
