On motion of Complainant Sol and it appearing to the Court that publication has been duly made in the Ripley News,published in Ripley,Tennessee in Lauderdale County,for four consecutive weeks as required by law for the defendent to appear on the first day of this Court and answer the bill of the Complainant heretofore filed against him and he has failed to do so,it is therefore ordered by the Court that all the allegations of Complainant's bill be taken for confessed and said cause set for hearing ex parte,and this cause coming on to be further heard before the Court upon the Bill of the Complainent JANE CROOK and pro confess heretofore entered against the defendent,JIM CROOK,and it satisfactorily appeared to the Court from the proof that the facts charged in said plaintiff's bill is true,that the defendent did willfully desert plaintiff on the _ day of March 1901 without any reasonable cause for more than two years before the filing of this bill in this cause and he has never been back since said desertion.That he has truly failed and neglected to provide for plaintiff and her two children as set out in her bill and that he was so cruel in his treatment of her that it rendered her condition intolerable and unsafe for said plaintiff to live and cohabit with said defendent.It is therefore ordered,adjudged and decreed by the Court that the bonds of matrimony sudsisting between the plaintiff and defendent be absolutely and forever dissolved and for nothing held that the plaintiff be vested with all rights and privileges of an unmarried person.And it is also considered by the Court that the Plaintiff JANE CROOK will recover of the defendent JIM CROOK all the costs of this cause for which let an execution issue. In this cause it appearing to the Court that one JOHN CONNER,sometimes called LITTLE JOHN CONNER has been killed and it is alleged that said Killing was done by one OSCAR CROOK and it further appearing to the Court that there is no one willing to act as prosecutor,it is ordered that JNO.A.TIPTON,the Attorney General of this Court prosecute OSCAR CROOK and that he act in the Capacity of Prosecutor ex officis. *************** LAUDERDALE COUNTY,TENNESSEE CIRCUIT COURT MINUTES BOOK 23 PAGES 2 & 3 13TH AUGUST 1914 STATE OF TENNESSEE vs JOHN CROOK. Found guilty as charged; Pay State of Tennessee a fine of $50.00 and all costs of this cause including the state and county tax for all of which let an execution issue,and that he be confined in the county jail or workhouse for a perion of 60 days commencing this day.And in the event that he fail to pay or secure to be paid all of said fine and costs,he shall be further confined in the same county jail or workhouse until he has paid the same,secured it to be paid or worked the same out or until he is otherwise discharged by due process of law. He pleads not guilty to housebreaking but guilty to petit larceny.Jury on his plea to petit larceny assess punishment at 11 months,29 days in county jail or workhouse. This day came on this cause to be heard,it appeared to the Court that the defendent is guilty of having begotten the bastard child of which POLLY ANN REYNOLDS was delivered in this county of Lauderdale on the 26th of March 1858.It is therefore considered by the Court that the defendent be charged with the maintenance of said Bastard and that he pay for that purpose into the hands of the Commissioners of the Poorhouse the sum of thirty dollars for the year commencing the 26th of March 1859.
