LOCALS AND PERSONALS--Carl,son of Mr.J.H.TILLMAN,is quire sick at his home in Curve. MR.JAMES FULLEN died at the home of Mr.J.G.YOUNGER near Lightfoot after a lingering illness and was buried at Union Cemetery the following day. MR.J.A.KEMP and little son,Floyd,have returned from a visit to his mother and uncle in Marion,Ky.His uncle is now 94 years old and enjoying good health.This was Mr.KEMP's first visit in five years. BEXAR--BUDDY ARWOOD is moving to Edith this week. MR.A.BURLISON,of Chickawba,Ark.,was here a few days this week. MRS.JULIA HARRISON and two daughters spent Sunday with A.H.LOTT & Family. MR.THOMAS WEBB,of Winthrope,Ark.,was here last week to see his mother,brothers and relatives.Winthrope is in Little River Co.WEBB moved from this county in 1877,but came back to Tennessee ten years later and remained here until 1892 when he again made his home in that place. LITTLE CLYDE CATES was kicked over the left eye by a colt early Sunday morning,and it is fearful he is seriously injured. THE RESIGNATION of T.I.BARNES as Court Surveyor was accepted and MR.J.C.SAWYER was elected to fill the vacancy. REDUCED from paying sales tax and road duty included MR.E.S.METER. GLIMP--MR.BOB BARNES had as his guest,MR.THOMAS,of Marion,Ark.,who was here prospecting. MISS EVA BARNES,of Memphis,spent several days with her parents. GATES--M.W.SAVAGE,of Toulon,has bought the store of C.N.WILKES and Company. NANKIPOO--RICE PATE cut his foot very badly a few days ago. A LITTLE DAUGHTER of Mr.John IVEY,had the misfortune to break her arm last week. J.G.EDNEY was in Ripley to see his father,who is sick with pneumonia. CEDAR GROVE--MESSRS.LYLE MANESS and FRED KLUTTS,of Ripley,were guests of CHAS.MANESS Sunday. TRIBUTE OF RESPECT--MRS.EMMA WHEELER,who died January 9th,1907,was a loyal and devoted member of the U.D.C.She was the wife of Capt.W.W.WHEELER,who served as a Confederate Soldier. MRS.HAMIL DEAD--MRS.ISABELLA HAMIL,wife of ALEX HAMIL,died at her home in Ripley last Friday.The funeral service eas held at the family residence Saturday at 2 p.m.,conducted,at her request,by her friend and neighbor,W.G.SPECK,and burial took place in the Old Cemetery.She was 68 years of age on the 9th of last December,resident of Ripley since her marriage in 18_? EDITH--WILL CHRISTIE is as proud as he can be-it's a girl. MARSHALL KINZER,son of DR.& MRS.J.W.KINZER,died at Jonesboro,Ark.,and was brought here and interred in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. LOCAL AND PERSONALS--MR.J.D.JOPLIN died at the home of W.F.ROBERSON in Lightfoot Sunday. EMMETT CARL,little son of MR.JOHN PETE McINTYRE,died Tuesday in his home near Luckett. AS WE GO TO PRESS,we learn of the death of MRS.W.H.FLIPPIN,which occurred at her home east of Ripley.The remains will be interred in Maplewood Cemetery Friday at 11 a.m. ************************ FRIDAY JANUARY 25,1907 CEDAR GROVE--Quite a large number of people from this neighborhood attended the funeral of MRS.CALLIE FLIPPIN Friday. LOCAL AND PERSONALS--A DAUGHTER was born to the J.M.CARNEYS Saturday. MR.GREEN HASLIP died on the 17th at his home near Edith. MRS.L.T.CLARK died at her home near Henning after a lingering illness. A LITTLE CHILD of CHARLES PATTON died at his home two miles north of Ripley on the 21st,and was buried the following day at Cross Roads. WILL KELLER and Georgia RICHARDSON were married Sunday night at the residence of JOE HALE near Arp. CARDS are out announcing the marriage of CLARA ALFORD to REV.ALLEN WEBB,Tuesday,February 5th,1907,at the home of the bride's parents. GLIMP--Mr.& Mrs.BOB LEWIS attended the funeral of her mother,MRS.LANKFORD at Poplar Grove. GUSSIE,infant daughter of MR.& MRS.GEORGE GAINES,died last Friday of congestive chills. PLEASANT HILL--THE ROBERT BARFIELDS are parents of a fine girl born on the 19th.Bob says she weighs 15 pounds. MRS.CASEY MITCHELL,of near Salem,died in Memphis on the 20th,when she went to undergo an operation for cancer of the liver.Her husband died more than 20 years ago. LOCALS AND PERSONALS--MRS.P.L.LANKFORD died at her home near Poplar Grove Saturday and was buried Sunday in Poplar Grove Cemetery. A LITTLE CHILD of GEORGE S.GAINES,died at his home near Glimp on the 24th,burial was Asbury. On January 27th,MRS.ELIZA ROBERSON,widow of the late J.D.ROBERSON,died at her home in Lightfoot,buried at Asbury Cemetery. ELLIE DRUMWRIGHT,son of W.R.DRUMWRIGHT,died at the home of his uncle,WALTER DRUMWRIGHT,on January 22nd.About 19 years of age,he leaves his father,five sisters and four brothers. ************************ FRIDAY FEBRUARY 8,1907 GATES--The remains of JOHN PICKARD,who died at Tiger Tail Satueday evening with pneumonia,was brought here and interred in Concord burying ground Monday. MR.ALBERT DANIEL and MISS NORA FERGUSON were married at the home of the bride. W.R.NEIGHBORS DEAD--died January 21st.,twice married,first to FANNING HEARING;to which three children were born:W.H.NEIGHBORS,of N.Y.,MRS.J.A.BANDY & MISS FANNIE NEIGHBOURS,both of Memphis.Secondly married MISS ETTA KENNEDY,who,with several children survive. SIX NEGROES DROWNED--in the Forked Deer River,near Tigar Tail:ROBERT LEATH, JIM STANTON, BUD WINCHESTER, WALTER HAYNES, HENRY JACKSON, and TOM CLARK, when a skift overturned. NORTH CHICKSAWABA,ARK.--MR.ERVIN LOTT & MISS ANNIE LANGLEY were married a few days ago. JANUARY 25th,J.A.LEDBETTER and MISS VERA HIPP were married.Both are from Lauderdale Co.Tenn. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--A little child of MR.H.H.HUNTER died at his home near Lightfoot August 1st. MR.J.A.McGARRIETY died at his home near Poplar Grove and was buried the following day at Poplar Grove. MR.& MRS.BLAIR PIERSON,son,James,and daughter,Eloise,of Memphis,were called here by the illness and death of GRADY PIERSON. ************************** FRIDAY MARCH 1,1907 QUITMAN,ARK.--MRS.ELIZABETH JENKINS,wife of S.D.JENKINS,formerly of Ripley,died this afternoon,February 19th,all five children were with her at the end.The five daughters,wives of REV.G.W.WILLIAMS,of Quitman;HON.W.T.HA--MOCK,of Quitman;HON.J.C.CLARK,of Conway;REV.H.L.HAIN,banker of Quitman,and MISS IDA JENKINS,their youngest daughter.One son died in infancy and is buried in Mt.Pleasant Cem.,at Arp,in Lauderdale Co.,Tenn.Two daughters died in young womanhood.She will be laid to rest tomorrow by the side of her two daughters,my father,S.D.JENKINS,Sr.,and our daughter Minnie Lee.signed: J.M.JENKINS. DEATH--On the evening of February 23,1907,after a long illness at his home three miles south of Ripley,MACK HAYNES,one of the old and honorable landmarks of Lauderdale County,quietly breathed his last,aged 87 years.A faithful member of the church of Old Hermon as long as it stood.He was buried in the old family graveyard across the public road on the 24th by his faithful wife,who preceded him to the grave a few years since. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--BEN WHITE moved his family to Memphis yesterday. MRS.J.D.ABBOTT left for Arkansas to join her husband. MRS.HANNAH BYRN is the guest of her daughter,MRS.DEE CALDWELL. MISS SALLIE EASLEY left yesterday for Greenwood Miss.,to attend the marriage of her sister,MISS AVA,to PRESTON JOHNSTON,of Memphis. MRS.JAMES P.SLOAN returned to her home in Memphis Wednesday,accompanied by her mother,MRS.ELIZABETH JACKSON. RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT FOR--J.A.McGARRITY,born in Chester Co.,S.C.,December 9,1842;came to Tennessee in 1872;died February 17,1907;leaves wife and eleven children. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN--After four days of patient suffering,on October 22nd,1906,as the day of dying,the beautiful soul of my darling little sister,BERTHA LILLITH ROBERSON,returned to it's Maker(very long) signed: Sister,MAI. IN MEMORIUM--MRS.W.H.FLIPPIN(nee CALLIE CAMPBELL),fell asleep January 17,1907.She was born near Durant,Miss.,on April 28th,1848.She united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.She married WILLIAM H.FLIPPIN on February 17,1870,and three years later,she and her husband moved to Lauderdale County,Tenn.,near Ripley.Six children are left to mourn her. **************************** FRIDAY MARCH 8,1907 WHERE ARE THEY?--W.J.HUBBARD and two sons,aged 18 and 14,mysteriously disappeared.They left Gold Dust,Tenn.,on December 27th,1906,and nothing has been heard from them since a letter written from San Souci,informing the family that they had crossed the river safely.The father of W.J.HUBBARD accompanied his daughter-in-law and three smaller children over to Vilonia about the 1st of January.They remained there three weeks,but being unable to hear anything of the missing son and grandsons,they moved to Bebee,where they now reside. DEATH (CAN'T READ NAME OF COMMUNITY)--News was received of the death of MISS IRENE JONES.She moved to Ripley about 2 years ago,and then to Memphis.Just ten days before her death,her nephew,GRADY PIERSON,passed over the river.Grady was only 17 years old.Irene leaves four sisters;MRS.ATTWOOD PIERSON, MRS.BLAIR PIERSON,MRS.Emma CHANEY,and MRS.LUCY CHANEY.The remains were brought to Ripley Monday and buried in Maplewood Cemetery. MARRIAGE--MISS VERNA ADCOCK and E.G.BILLIN were married in Bloomington,Ill.,on Thursday of last week.The bride is the daughter of T.J.ADCOCK,of Gates,the groom is a young businessman of Los Angeles,Calif.His parents live in Pella,Iowa. DOUBLE BRIDGES--MRS.TRAVIS,of near Laneview,is a guest of her daughter,MRS.C.D.QUINN. GATES--A son was born to MR.& Mrs.C.N.WILKES Thursday. REV.FRANK SAVAGE,of Flippin,visited his brother,M.W.SAVAGE Thursday night. ALBERT SAVAGE made a trip to Ripley Sunday. EDITH--MISS NELL PENNINGTON,of Ripley,spent Saturday and Sunday with her sister,MRS.T.E.MILLER. LANGLEY'S MILL--MISS FANNIE CASEY,aged 25 years,departed this life Friday night,March 8th,1907,survived by a mother;two sisters,MRS.R.C.McKEE and MISS JENNIE CASEY;and two brothers.She was laid to rest at Mary's Chapel Sunday. CONCORD--MISS JENNIE DAVIS,of Union City,is with her brother,JOHN DAVIS. MR.& MRS.H.W.WHITE are proud parents of a fine baby boy,born on the 11th. J.W.WARD was called to the bedside of his son in Hickman,Ky.,Sunday. GLIMP--BORN TO MR.& MRS.J.M.DUNN,on Tuesday night,March 12th,twin girls.Both mother and babes doing nicely. FRED LLOYD and his wife Sundayed with her mother,MRS.WM.CROOK,returning in the afternoon,accompanied by J.H.CROOK and sister,MISS OMA CROOK,who spent the night with them. BOB BARNES,as advertised last week on public auction everything but what he expects to move to Charleston,Mo.He and his family will leave some time next week. IN MEMORY--MRS.EMMA CRAIG,the subject of this sketch,was born May 20,1875,and on September 10,1890,she was joined in the bonds of holy matrimony to L.L.CRAIG.To this happy union were born seven children,six of whom survive the mother.After lingering for some few weeks in a state that was neither life nor death,surrounded by loving husband;weeping children;and praying friends,on November 28th,1906,she yielded her spirit into His tender keeping. LUCKETT--MR.J.A.WEBB is all smiles-it's a boy. SHOT IN A CRAP GAME--In a dispute over a crap game in the railroad cut Wednesday night,JIM JONES shot FRANK RECTOR in the left arm.Both men were arrested by Marshel WOOD.Both were negroes. DEATH CLAIMS OUR OLDEST CITIZEN--CAPT.WILLIAM BOYDSTUN died at his home near Ripley Wednesday.He had been confined to his bed over two years.He was born in Hamilton County,Tenn.,90 years ago the first of last December and had been a citizen of Lauderdale County for 73 years.He had married three times,his last wife,MRS.FANNIE BYRN surviving him.He has no living children.He was a gallant Confederate soldier.He was buried with camp honors at Grace Cemetery. ADDITIONAL LOCALS--J.E.OUTLETT,a white man was arrested here Thursday morning at 2:30 a.m. by night watchman LEWIS.He is charged with attempting to unlock a rear door on East Main. CAPT.P.N.CONNOR received a telegram Tuesday from Weatherford,Texas announcing the death of his sister,MRS.LIZZIE READ,widow of the late JUDGE E.J.READ,of Brownsville,daughter of GEN.WM.CONNER.Deceased was 76 years of age.She leaves one daughter,MRS.IVY,and one son,LEWIS A.READ. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--MRS.M.A.EDWARDS died at her home near Edith on the 17th. MR.HEWETTE SPARKS left Monday for Antlers,Okla.,to follow his profession. MR.R.H.PEACOCK,of Gold Dust died last Saturday and was buried the following day at Walnut? Grove. M.G.CRUMP,wife and baby of Talladege,Ala.,are guests of parents,R.O.CRUMP. MR.& MRS.POLK SMITH are the proud parents of a fine baby girl who arrived on the 15th to brighten their future. MRS.W.T.O.GAY died Tuesday at her home near Flippen,of pneumonia,and was buried Wednesday at the Leggett burying ground. MR.I.F.HENDRON & MISS EVA BURKHEAD attended the marriage of J.A.LANIER & MISS EDNA SMITH which occurred in Woodville Monday afternoon. CONCORD--MRS.J.M.SMITH spent Wednesday in Woodville with her sister,MRS.VAUGHN. MRS.ALICE STRINGER,of Covington,spent Friday and Saturday with her mother,MRS.DODD. MRS.MALLIE WHITE died at her home in Gates on the 12th,and was buried at Concord the following day. CEDAR GROVE--An infant of GUS JORDON had it's back fractured by a fall last week. ************************ FRIDAY MARCH 29,1907 DEATH--MRS.W.H.JORDON died at her home in Henning last Sunday night after a brief illness and her remains were interred in Bethlehem Cemetery the following day.Deceased was a daughter of MR.FRANK CURRIE,was 44 years of age,a member of the Methodist Church. PLEASANT HILL--MR.& MRS.GEO.FRY,of Whitefield spent Sunday with Grandma NORMAN. MISSES ANNA & CALLIE WHITE spent Saturday and Sunday with their sister,Mrs.L.E.SANDERS at Lightfoot. We learn that ALLEN COX,who was carried to Memphis and operated on for appendcitis two weeks ago is getting along fine. MRS.LOU BARFIELD died Saturday,after a long and painful afflication caused from breaking her hip last November.A member of Salem Baptist Church,she leaves a daughter,MRS.CHARLES LANDFORD. DUPREE & DEWESE--WM.PALMER DUPREE & MISS ANNIE CHISM DEWESE were married at the home of the bride in this city at 9 o'clock Wednesday night.The ceremony was performed by REV.POTTER of the First Presbyterian Church.The wedding march was played with pleasing effectiveness by MR. COLLIER MIDYETT.(Covington Leader) DESPERATE FIGHT BETWEEN NEGROES--A desperate fight was pulled off in the First District Monday afternoon between AB GAUSE & WALTER BOND,both negroes.As a result BOND received three rifle shot wounds in his body and is seriously hurt.The difficulty arose over a negro boy. THE DEATH OF MR.W.H.LARIMORE--which occurred at his home in Ripley last Friday morning has brought a bitter cup of sorrow to the lips of friends and relatives.He was taken ill on March 3rd at Carbondale,Ill.,where he had been employed for the past year in a mercantile establishment,and his illness from the first was so foreboding that he was brought home on the night of the 7th,where the tender care of a mother,sisters and loved ones could be bestowed upon him.He was 35 years of age.Funeral services were held in the home,burial in the Old Cemetery. BEATEN BY TWO NEGROES--Early Saturday morning,OSCAR AMMONS,a highly respected white man of the 3rd District,met two negroes,JOHN WALKER and son,BOB WALKER in the road near Henning and became involved,it is alleged,in a difficulty over a hog.While no knives or pistols were brought into play,yet the three fought,it is said,until they were almost exhausted.AMMONS was knocked down and severely beaten,and it is thought that his wounds may prove fatal.The negroes were not dangerously hurt.WALKER and his boy was arrested by Constable IRA A.BARFIELD,and given a prelimenery hearing before JUSTICE H.B.MOORER,of Henning.They were placed in jail.AMMONS has a wife and three children. MR.ED CRAIG,of Blytheville,Ark.,is attending the bedside of his grandfather,MR.MACK McGUIRE,who is quite ill. MR.ED BUTLER,of Pheonix,Mo.,arrived Monday night to visit his sister,MRS.ANDREW CRAIG. The little five-year-old son of MR.J.B.MEADOR died at his home in Ashport on the 21st and was buried at Bethebara the following day. J.L.HANCOCK was called to Blytheville,Ark.,Wednesday by the death of his son-in-law,SAM INGRAM,which occurred that morning from blood poisoning from an accidental gunshot wound in his arm. REV.B.F.BLACKMON--aged 61 years,died at the home of his brother in Jackson Monday afternoon,after a long illness of laryngitis.He leaves a wife and six children.At one time he was pastor of the Methodist Church and claimed many friends in Ripley. STONEWALL SCHOOL HOUSE--MRS.L.M.VAUGHN visited her sister,MRS.JEFF WEBB Sunday. REV.J.D.NEWMAN went to Alabama last Monday after his son,JOHN.They returned Tuesday. A surprise wedding took place in the public road near L.M.VAUGHN's home last Sunday morning at 11 o'clock,the contracting parties being JOHN RICHARDSON,of Monette,Ark.,and MISS EMMA HARRISON,of this place.ESQ.THOMPSON officiated. FINIS,little son of BOB McGARRITY,wasbadly scalded Tuesday from a tea kettle turning over. CONCORD--MRS.ALLEN died Monday at her home near Forked Deer,and was buried the following day at Concord. NANKIPOO--We learn that MRS.RICHARDSON,of Double Bridges,mother of Bud RICHARDSON died last Friday. S.F.HINTON went to Bolivar a few days since and was accompanied home by TOM DUGGAN,whose mind has been fully restored. MRS.THOS.HEFFRON--after a long illness,died at her home in this city on the evening of March 28th,and her body,surrounded by loved ones and friends,was interred in Maplewood Cemetery.Deceased was a native of Hopkinsville,Ky.,and at the time of her death,44 years of age. DEATH--On the evening of March 29th,at the age of 89 years,MR.J.M.McGUIRE entered into rest.He removed here from Williamson County,Tenn.,his native home in 1860. "Uncle Mack" was laid to rest in Asbury Cemetery on the 31st. ADDITIONAL LOCALS--A young negro by the name of BUNK GILLISPIE had both legs crushed by falling under a freight train,which he attempted to board.He died a few hours later from the effects of the injuries.
