LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 10,1931 PASSES ON...The death angel entered the home of Mrs.Neill JOHNSON at Jackson on July 3rd and carried away the soul of her mother, Mrs.Mary Florence CARR,who was visiting her.The funeral was conducted by Rev.N.B. HARDERMAN of Henderson at 11 o'clock Saturday morning at the residence of Mrs.Everette RICHARDSON.Mrs.CARR was born in Milan and was 71 years of age.She was the daughter of Lemual & Nancy SHEPARD MARTIN,who moved to Gibson County from Virginia over a century ago.She was the last of this family of six children. Her husband,William C. CARR died several years ago leaving her with six little girls.Mrs.CARR became a member of the Church of Christ early in life.Several years ago,she sold her home in Henderson and came to live with Mrs.E.M. BROWNING at Nankipoo,with whom she made her home until death. Left to mourn her passing are six daughters, Mrs.E.M. BROWNING, Mrs.Everette RICHARDSON, Miss Allie C. CARR, of Nankipoo and Halls, Mrs.J.Dee HENRY, of Hickman,Ky.,Mrs.Neill JO HNSON,of Jackson, Mrs.Spurgeon BROWN,of Capleville; and three grandchildren. Interment was in Halls Cemetery. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 10,1931 WOODVILLE...The children of Mrs.Sallie CHAPMAN and Mr.John DANIELS had their annual reunion Sunday.A large crowd was present. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 10,1931 LOCALS...Mr.& Mrs.Vernon PETERS and Miss Dorothy WALKER were crowded off the highway near Ripley Monday afternoon as they were returning from Covington.Fortunately they were unijured and the car only slightly damaged,After quite a chase,extending as far as Cross Town,Highway Patrolman McCLEISH captured Joe DUDA,who gave his address as Chicago,and brought him back to Ripley where he was tried before Justice HENRY on a charge of reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.He paid Mr.PETERS $10 for car damages and $14.50 fine & costs. Miss Joan RILES is now in charge of the Arcade Beauty Shoppe.She comes highly recommended,having taken a graduate course in beauty culture at Molar College. Mrs.Harry EBER,who returned last week from a visit with Mr.EBER in Ashville,N.C.,reports his condition is steadily improving,he has gained 17 pounds since he went to that city.She said Mr.EBER certainly appreciated the nice letters from his many friends in Ripley. Mr.Wesley FREEMAN w as killed by lightening at the Barr on Wednesday afternoon of last week while standing on the bank of the river.He was 25 years of age and is survived by a wife and one child.Interment was at Walnut Grove Cemetery the following day. Mrs.Harry MURPHY was taken quite ill Sunday,suffering with ptomaine poisoning,the result of eating 4th of July barbecue Saturday night. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 10,1931 CURVE...Arthur JACKSON was painfully burned about the eyes and face Saturday afternoon when he came in contact with an electric light wire which had dropped low enough to strike him as he was driving along the highway. Robert SUTTON had the misfortune Friday while loading logs to get the tip of one finger cut off. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 17,1931 LUCKETT..Mr.& Mrs.Claud MITCHELL of St.Louis attended the funeral of her sister,Mrs.Elmer CONRAD. Those called here by the death of Mrs.Elmer CONRAD were Mrs.Harry WEBB and children, Mr.& Mrs.Ben VOWELL, Mr.& Mrs.Charlie MILLER, Mr.Henry JONES and daughter, Mr.& Mrs.Pearl GRIGGS and baby,of St.Louis. Mr.W.H.JONES was called to St.Louis Tuesday of last week to attend the bedside of his daughter,Mrs.Elmer CONRAD.She died Thursday and was brought back here Saturday and laid to rest in Poplar Grove Cemetery Sunday afternoon. Mr.& Mrs.J.A. WEBB are parents of a son born July 8th. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 17,1931 MASCEDONIA...Mr.& Mrs.Tom CLAY have the sympathy of the community in the loss of their baby who died Sunday of colitis after two weeks illness.Hr was laid to rest in Enon Cemetery at 10 o'clock Monday. Mrs.Lawrence SADLER was called to Luckett Saturday by the death of her neice who died in St.Louis and was brought here for burial. Mr.Auzie RICE is confined to his bed at home by blood poisoning in his left hand. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 17,1931 HENNING...After lingering more than four weeks,Richard Alexander HALLIBURTON passes away at his home here on Sunday,July 12 at 2 p.m. He was the only son of W.A. & Mary NIXON HALLIBURTON,and was born August 14,1869 in Lauderdale County,near Henning,where he spent his entire life.He was married to Miss Emma BOWERS on December 4,1888.To this union was born four daughters and one son; Mrs.Bates PORTER & Mrs.Robert BARFIELD,of Memphis, Mrs.T.D.TURNER and Miss Grace HALLIBURTON of Henning, and W.A.HALLIBURTON of Gainsville,Fla. He was a member of the Church of Christ,burial in Bethlehem Cemetery.He also left two sisters,Mrs.Florence POLK,of Memphis and Mrs.Jack ALSTON and a brother,W.D.BOYD,of Henning. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 17,1931 LOCALS...Mr.& Mrs.W.B. MIDYETT and Mrs.Claud NEEL spent Tuesday in Memphis. Mrs.Drucilla D. MANERS,age 72,died Monday at the home of Mr.R.S. MARTIN at Hurricane Hill. Funeral services were conducted by Rev.LINDSEY and the remains were laid to rest in Mary's Chapel cemetery. While engaged in loading logs on Forked Deer River Monday morning,Mr.R.P. WATKINS had both legs broken above the ankles and possible spinal injury when a log fell on him.He was brought to Ripley for first aid treatment by Dr. Joe LACKEY,then sent on to Brownsville hospital.He gave his home as Philadelphia,Miss.,and was employed by Woods Construction Co.,of Luxora,Ark. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 17,1931 ASHPORT...Miss Violet NELSON of Gold Dust,spent Monday in the home of her sister, Mrs.Walter MUELLER. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 17,1931 MRS. J.R.FREELAND..who was taken ill last week while on a visit to her daughter, Mrs.V.W. YATES,was carried to the Brownsville hospital Friday and passed away Sunday afternoon.The immediate cause of her death was double pneumonia.The funeral service was held in Brownsville Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock and the remains were brought to Ripley and laid to rest in Maplewood cemetery.Deceased was the daughter of Mrs.N.A.HART who survives her,as well as a daughter and several brothers and sisters. Mr.& Mrs.Clint WATERS were called to Hurricane Hill Monday by the sudden death of her mother,Mrs.MAYNARD. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 24,1931 EIGHT PRISONERS ESCAPE..Friday night one white man and seven negroes broke jail,exit being made by cutting a hole in the roof and sliding down a waterpipe in the rear of the jail.Those making their get-a-way were Collin GRAVES,white,bound over on a charge of house breaking and larceny; Wheeler WASHINGTON,charged with larceny; Jack YOUNG,charged with larceny; Sammie FLOWERS,charged with larceny; J.C. BLACK,juvenile case,charge,making an indecent proposal to a girl; Robert REED,charged with murder; and Mose MOODY.The latter was recaptured Saturday. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 24,1931 HENNING..The death of Albert Francis POSEY occurred at his residence,1154 Agnes Place,Memphis,Saturday morning,July 18,at the age of 56 years.He was the husband of Mrs.Mary Olive UPCHURCH POSEY and the father of Mrs.R.H.SHEFFIED of Hattiesburg,Miss.Funeral services,conducted by Rev.BATEMAN were held Sunday morning and the remains were brought to Henning and interred in Bethlehem cemetery.He was the only son of the late Albert and Frances SMITH POSEY. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 24,1931 DEATH..Humphrey,Ark.,July 21,1931--Editors; Enterprise.Possibly some of your readers would be interested to know of the death of Mrs.Hattie GRANDE,which occurred July 19th.You,of course will remember her as the lady who lived for many years with the late Mrs.R.F.GAINES in your county and city.Mrs.GRANDE's maiden name was OSBORNE,a sister to my father,J.T.{Dock}OSBORNE.Her other brothers,William,John,Robert and Alcy OSBORNE all once lived in Lauderdale County,but are all dead now.Mrs.GRANDE had passed her 77th birthday,having been born March 7,1854,in Haywood County,near Brownsville.She was buried in Lone Tree cemetery in our family plot at Stuttgart. /s/ J.Alvin OSBORNE. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 24,1931 DEATH..After lingering for four weeks,Thomas Ervin KENNEDY passed away in the Brownsville Hospital on Sunday July 19,at 11:30 p.m. He was born on July 17,1882,in Lauderdale County near Ripley,where he spent his entire life.On June 2,1917 he was married to Mrs.Effie KIRKSEY.The funeral was conducted by Rev.TAYLOR at Grace church Monday.He is survived by his wife; one brother,C.W.KENNEDY; one sister,Mrs.Sam McCOY of Halls. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JULY 24,1931 LOCALS..Tne four months' daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Sol GRIGGS died Monday at Ashport. A daughter was born Tuesday to Mr.& Mrs.J.A.HIGGENS.She has been named Betty Jo. An unfortunate accident happened near Woodville Tuesday afternoon which cost the life of a 13 year old negro boy, John Ed RICE Jr. He fad gone out with a party to help distribute circulars of Ripley's two big trade days and was riding on a fender rather than have to open the door everytime a circular was to be put at a house.The car skidded off the road,pinning the little fellow between the car and the embankment,killing him almost instantly.The car was being driven by Nig TAYLOR,colored,and Mr.Ted WILSON had charge of the distribution.No one regrets the accident more than Mr.WILSON.
