LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE SEPTEMBER 20,1929 DEATH..Joseph H.MARTIN,53,son of Rev.George H.MARTIN,pastor of the First Methodist Church in Memphis,died at Baptist Hospital shortly before midnight Sunday from injuries received a few hours earlier in a crash between his car and one driven by W.T.OVERTON,Jr.,at Union Ave.and Kimbrough Street.He suffered a fractured skull,internal injuries and a fractured arm.He was thrown from his car when sideswiped by young OVERTON. MARTINhad been a Memphis resident for 27 years.He leaves his parents; five brothers, H.W.,T.H.,A.M.,G.B.,and R.M.MARTIN,all of Memphis and one sister,Mrs.T.S.McFERRIN,also of Memphis. RIPLEY,TENNESSEE SEPTEMBER 20,1929 DEATH..Mr.B.S.MORRIS died at his home on Ashport Street,September 12th,1929.He was born in Darlington,S.C. on November 23rd,1857.He was a son of Lieut.J.M.& Rebecca MORRIS.He lost his father early in the Civil War,and whose remains were laid to rest in the Confederate Cemetery in Richmond,VA.After his father’s death,his mother moved to Lauderdale County,Tenn.;where her father,S.D.JENKINS was residing.Mr.MORRIS was married to Miss Sarah E.WEBB on DEcember 4th,1879.To this union were born nine children,five of whom preceded him in death.He leaves his wife,three daughters and one son;Mrs.C.T.AUSTIN,Mrs.J.B.HUNTER and J.S.MORRIS,all of Ripley and Mrs.H.C.D.MORRIS,of Timmonsville,S.C. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE DECEMBER 20,1929 SON KILLED FATHER..Early Tuesday night,Odell ARNOLD shot and killed his father,Harden ARNOLD,at the farm home near Millington.Young ARNOLD was arrested and placed in the Shelby County jail.While admitting that he and his father quarreled,yet he claims the killing was accidental.ARNOLD is survived by his wife and eight children.They formerly lived near Ripley,having moved to Millington two years ago.The remains of the deceased were buried Wednesday in Henning. STEPHENS, one of Lauderdale County's oldest and best known citizens,died Saturday morning at the Baird-Brewer Hospital,Dyersburg.He would have observed his 87th birthday on Friday of next week. MAXEDON,retired Methodist minister,of Memphis,officiating.Burial was in Halls cemetery,with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY NOVEMBER 24,1950 CARMACK HELD TO JURY UNDER $2,500 BOND...Sam CARMACK,Jr.,of Curve,was bound over to the grand jury in a trial before Magistrate Alvin A. BRAY,November 16th,on charges of carrying a pistol,attempting to murder G.J. JACKSON with a pistol.His bond was set at $2,500. JACKSON testified that on Sunday evening about three weeks ago at Curve,CARMACK got off a truck and came up to him and started cursing him and threatening to kill him.JACKSON stated that he started to walk away and as he got to a nearby house and started around the house,he again met CARMACK,who,without saying a word,drew his pistol and shot at him. Carl SMITH testified that he was in a store at Curve when CARMACK came in and falsely accused him of acts he had not done,and then drew his pistol on him,and told him that he would pin him to the wall with the bullets. Several witnesses affirmed these acts,whereupon CARMACK was bound over to the grand jury,which meets on February 5,1951. Robert S. THOMAS,attorney,represented the prosecuters.CARMACK was not represented at the trial by counsel and offered no testimony in his own behalf. RICE,one of Ripley's most esteemed and beloved citizens, died at the home on Henning street late Saturday afternoon as a result of a stroke of apoplexy sustained while visiting in the home of his son near his residence on Friday.Soon after the attack he was rushed to his home,but he never regained consciousness. Mr.RICE was born at the RICE old homestead near Orysa on June 18,1850,and would have soon reached his 75th birthday. He was married 64 years ago to Miss Nina GREEN. Besides the widow, four children survive; E.M. RICE, Roy L. RICE and Miss Estelle RICE,all of Ripley, and Mrs.John Durhanville. One brother also survives,T.F. RICE of Orysa. Deceased is a member of one of the oldest and prominent families of West Tennessee. RAY,wife of prominent farmer of the Eighth Civil District,six miles northwest of here killed herself by firing the contents of a 12-gauge shotgun into her heart.Death was immediate.Deceased had been in bad health for the past several months,having undergone a most serious operation in a Dyersburg hospital about five months ago.She leaves a son,and one daughter,and many relatives.She was a well-liked woman and her untimely death is much regreted by the entire community. WOOD,we cannot recall having ever heard one word derogatory of his splendid Christian character,or those principles of good citizenship which constitute the true gentleman.His life of 77 years had been spent in Ripley and immediate vicinity.He served Lauderdale county as sheriff,elected in 1892 and 1896.He was born near Hurricane Hill,three miles south of Ripley,in December 1847, and it was in the cemetery at that place which bears his name,that his remains were laid to rest Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock,after services at the grave conducted by Rev.F.H.PEEPLES.Surviving besides his wife,and two daughters,Misses Cornelia WOOD and Sadie WOOD,are two brothers,J.H. THE HENNING PROGRESS FRIDAY LAUDERDALE COUNTY,TENESSEE MAY 31,1928 FARMER IS SLAIN IN PISTOL FIGHT-- RIPLEY,TENN.-George RICHARDSON,22,farmer of near here,(Golddust),is dead and Jap HENDERSON,a neighbor,is held in county jail on a charge of murder,following a free for all fight on the Mississippi River,16 miles west of here,late Sunday. According to reports received here,HENDERSON and Jim SCOTT,another farmer,engaged in a fight after the former had accused SCOTT of mistreating his wife.SCOTT was knocked down by HENDERSON,and his son George,called upon bystanders to stop the fight. RICHARDSON,a witness,is said to have pulled a gun and ordered HENDERSON to cease the battle.HENDERSON left the scene and returned a few moments later with a revolver,according to reports,HENDERSON,hiding behind a tree,is said to have opened fire on RICHARDSON. RICHARDSON was wounded above the heart,but returned HENDERSON’s fire after falling to the ground.RICHARDSON died an hour later.HENDERSON came to Ripley and surrendered to officiers.He will be given a preliminary hearing Friday,June 1st,on a charge of murder. Rites were at 2 p.m.Monday in Memorial Park Funeral Home,Memphis,with burial in Memorial Park. A World War II veteran,he had retired after 34 years of employment at Firestone. He was a member of the Rubber Worker Retirees and of the Parker Fellowship Class of Raliegh United Methodist Church. He leaves his wife of 59 years,Doris WILLIAMS TILLMAN; a son, Dr.Ronald TILLMAN,of Jackson; two daughters, Brenda and Regina GLISSEN,of Memphis; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Hipp was born June 25,1843; died March 3,1916; aged 73 years,8 months and 9 days.Mr.Hipp was married to Miss Emily Barnes May 1,1871.To this union was born two girls and three boys,all of whom proceded him in death except Mr.Paul Hipp of Ashport with whom and his beloved companion,who also survives him,made their home.They were on a visit to Mr.& Mrs.Elbert Lockard at the time he was taken sick.His illness was only ten days."Uncle Jap" as he was called by many...joined the Baptist church at Ashport in 1894 and in 1909 moved his membership to Liberty Baptist church where it had since remained...The remains were laid to rest in Lightfoot Cemetery March 4,the funeral being conducted by Rev.J.W.Storer of Ripley. LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE JULY 23,1998 Natha Lee Lockard Richardson,73 years old,died June 5,1998.She was the wife of Felix Greer Richardson,of Ashport,Tennessee,and the daughter of Elbert and Pearl Lockard,of Lightfoot,Tennessee.She is survived by her son, E.Greer Richardson,M.D.,an orthopaedic surgeon with the Campbell Clinic in Memphis, daughter-in- law,Carol,three grandchildren, E.Greer Richardson,Jr.,M.D.,a psychiatry resident at Yale University, David Reynolds Richardson,a senior medical student at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, and Ellen Lockard Edens Richardson,a medical student at John Hopkins School in Baltimore,Maryland.Mrs.Richardson also leaves a sister,Elbe Lou Lockard Sowell,of Memphis, a brother,Elbert Green Lockard,of Hewitt,Texas,and his wife,Janelle,both of whom grew up in Ripley, as did Betty Jane Jones,a sister now living in Memphis.She had 11 neices and nephews.A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church,Memphis,Tennessee,200 East Parkway ay Poplar in the Chapel August 8,1998,11:OO a.m.,with a reception in her honor to follow.
