WATSON; a son,JOSEPH LEE WATSON of Manchester; another sister,MRS.G.W.LUNSFORD of San Antonio,Texas; and a brother,HOWARD J.RUFFIN,of Milwaukee,Wisc. ********* 81ST YEAR NO.18 FRIDAY DECEMBER 31,1965 CAR STRUCK BY TRAIN--MRS.HILDA PATTON,57,of Memphis,formerly of Ripley,was killed Wednesday when her 1965 Cadillac was struck by a freight train at White Station and the Southern Railroad Crossing.Witnesses said MRS.PATTON was driving north on White Station at about 10 miles an hour and the train was moving east at slow speed. "MRS.PATTON apparently looked east instead of west when she came to the crossing," said Police Inspector GRAYDON TINES."When she looked west and saw the train,she apparently opened the door and tried to jump clear,but it was to late." He said the train struck the left front of the car and turned it around,catching the victim between the car and the train.Her body came to rest 20 feet from where the car stopped.ALBERT H.CRAWFORD,41,of Ala.,fireman on the 40 car freight headed for Sheffield,Ala.,said,"It appeared the car would stop,but it didn't.When the woman saw that she was to far onto the tracks to avoid getting hit,she opened the door to jump,but she didn't have time."
