Hughes rnrh@bellsouth.net September 29, 2005, 4:53 pm The Press: Wed. Sept. 12, 1883 Died. On the afternoon , of Thursday, the 6th inst., George Payne. The death of Payne was caused by excessive drinking which produced delirium tremens. In his demented condition he wandered along Military road south until he reached Shoal Creek where he fell over a bank upon the rocks. Whether his fall or the effects of liquor caused his death is not clear. A coroner's inquest was held, but what their verdicts was we don't know. We think it would have been a correct verdict had the jury rendered thus: We find that the said Payne's death was caused by whisky administered to him by _______ _______ saloonist of _______, for the sake of money. Additional Comments: The blanks appear in the actual obit, just as above.
