HAMPTON, SMITH, HAMILTON, CLEGHORN, YANT, PAMPEN Thomas HAMPTON is one of a large family of children born to the marriage of Preston and Sarah HAMPTON, who were born in North Carolina and Tennessee in 1777 and 1788, and died in 1859 and 1830, respectively. They were farmers. Thomas was born in Lincoln County, October 29, 1815. He resided at home until twenty-six years of age, and three years later was united in marriage to Martha J. SMITH, who was born in 1826 and died in July, 1882. Seven children were born to them, four of whom are living: William, E. T., Mary A. (Mrs. W. F. HAMILTON), and Sarah (Mrs. Robert CLEGHORN). Mr. HAMPTON traveled in the West two years before his marriage and for two years after his marriage, farmed his father-in-law's farm, then purchased 175 acres which he afterward increased very much, but gave to his children until he now owns 121 acres. In 1885 Mr. HAMPTON married his second wife, Mrs. Elizabeth (YANT) PAMPEN. She was born in Lincoln County, September 25, 1835. Our subject suffered heavy losses by the late war, but in the main has been more than ordinarily successful. He and wife belong to the Baptist Church.
