J. Franklin SMITH may be mentioned as a prosperous farmer of Lincoln County, Tenn. He was born in 1835, and is one of ten children of Lemuel and De Bolious SMITH, born in 1790 and 1808, and died in 1855 and 1863, respectively. At the age of seventeen Franklin entered a newspaper office at Athens, and worked on the "Herald" about eight years. In 1863 he entered the army, joining Wharton's brigade and Malone's battalion, but remained only a short time, when he returned home. Since the war he has followed tilling the soil, and owns 371 acres of very desirable land, well improved. In December, 1879, he began merchandising near home, keeping a general line of goods, and has a large patronage and is doing well. He is a Democrat, and although he was in the war a short time, he was opposed to secession. He belongs to the I. O. O. F.
