STONE, DRAKE, SHULL, GOWELL J. D. STONE, a prominent citizen of the Seventh District, was born in Lincoln County, Tenn., December 25, 1839, one of six children born to the marriage of L. L. STONE and E. P. DRAKE, who were born in Bedford County, Va., and Madison County, Ala., respectively. The father's birth occurred in 1801. He came to Tennessee, with his parents, when about sixteen years of age. He was a farmer and owned upward of 1,000 acres of land. He died in 1880. The mother departed this life in 1872. Our subject received his rudimentary education in the common schools of Lincoln County, and afterward attended Nashville University. In 1861 he wedded S. A., daughter of D. B. and Julia SHULL, and their union resulted in the birth of five children: Julia (Mrs. J. A. GOWELL), Eva, B. B., E. E. and Rose. Our subject has always resided on the old homestead. After the death of his father he fell heir to a portion of the family estate, and he now owns 615 acres of very desirable land, well improved. He has given his children good educational advantages, and has done much to aid educational and religious institutions. He is conservative in politics, and his wife is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In 1861 he enlisted in Company B, Forty-fourth Tennessee Infantry, and was at Shiloh, Chickamauga, Perryville, Murfreesboro and many minor engagements. He was wounded at Shiloh and gave up active duties for about three months. He was captured at Murfreesboro, and held a prisoner at Camp Douglas, Chicago, for about four months. He returned home in May, 1865.
