INFANTRY Fayetteville Observer September 24, 1942 Company M., Tennessee state guard, at Fayetteville, Tenn., has the honor of belonging to the 10th TN infantry. An honor that every company in the state cannot have and we all should be justly proud of. The 10th TN infantry was organized at Ft. Henry in May, 1861. After the federal bombardment of Ft. Henry in February, 1862, the regiment withdrew to Ft. Donelson. During the subsequent federal assaults on Ft. Donelson, the regiment inflicted such heavy losses on the enemy as to win the sobriquet of "The Bloody 10th." After the surrender of Ft. Donelson, the field and staff officers were imprisoned at Ft. Warren, the line officers at Johnson's Island, and the enlisted men at Camp Douglas, Chicago. Exchanged at Vicksburg, the regiment was reorganized at Clinton, Miss., October 2, 1862. After a short service in Mississippi, the 10th TN served for the balance of the War Between the States as a part of the army of Tennessee. Battles and engagements of the 10th TN infantry: Ft. Henry, Tenn., Ft. Donelson, Tenn., Chickasaw Bayou, Miss., Port Hudson, La., Jackson, Miss, Raymond, Miss., Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Binggold Gap, Buzzard Roost, Resaca, New Hope Church, Pine Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, Utey Creek, Jonesboro, Franklin, Nashville, Bentenville, N.C. Greensboro (JOHNSON'S surrender.) At Chickamauga, "The Bloody 10th" carried three hundred and twenty-eight men into action and lost two hundred and twenty-four, killed and wounded. The regiment gave up only two prisoners-both wounded. The 10th TN infantry was authorized and reactivated as one of the three regiments of the 2d infantry brigade, Tennessee state guard by general order No. 4, A.G.O., Tennessee 27, May, 1942, succeeding to the regimental history and battle honors of the original regiment. Today, the 10th Tennessee infantry regiment is the largest regiment in the world. The 10th Tennessee infantry regiment is one of the few regiments known through the world. * * * THOMAS DAVID DUFF Fayetteville Observer October 15, 1942 Thomas David DUFF was born at Mulberry August 18, 1883, died at his home in Knoxville September 23, 1942. Preparations were begun for the funeral, when it was suggested that the Mayor of Athens be telegraphed for particulars, and he responded, we are told, "dead drunk." It is now claimed that the first message was a joke, but where the laugh is to come in, right thinking people cannot see. There is no joke in distressing a man's relatives and friends, by the promulgation of a misrepresentation of the truth. p.3 col.5 THE BRUTISH, BLOODY BAILES - Our readers will remember the circumstances attending the murder of his wife by John BAILES, a native of this county. The tragedy occurred in Limestone co., AL just over the Lincoln line. After his arrest and incarceration a mob took him out of jail to lynch him, but none of them having sufficient "sand" in their composition to tie the rope, the sheriff arrived and rescued him from his perilous (?) position and again landed him in the lock-up. He was afterward tried at Athens and sentenced to be hung. He carried an appeal to the Supreme court, which tribunal granted him an extension of his life by ordering the lower Court to go through the formula of a new trial. It was one of the most atrocious murders that occurs in the annals of crime, and we predict that he will terminate his earthly career suddenly by "jumping down a rope." p.3 col.5 THE MURDER AT MILLVILLE - A reward has been offered by the Governor, as is shown by the following, for Asa STRICKLAND, the murderer of Wm. G.W. BEDINGFIELD. The murder was committed at Millville on the 26th of December last: Office of Adjutant General, State of Tennessee, Nashville, Jan. 5, 1880.-W.D. MOORHEAD, Esq., Fayetteville, Tenn. Dear Sir-I herewith return a warrant for the arrest of STRICKLAND. The Governor has offered a reward of one hundred dollars for the arrest and conviction of STRICKLAND. Very Respectfully, Wallace W. We are sorry to announce that on Mon. evening, Feb. 2nd, about dark, or a while after, Mr. William BURNS, a well known citizen of our county, was drowned in West Mulberry creek at a ford known as Harrison's ford. Mr. BURNS had been to Fayetteville on Mon., and was observed by his friends to be under the influence of whiskey, which, it is supposed, resulted in the cause of his death. He was seen passing the residence of Mr. Jno. W. STREET, about three-fourths of a mile from the ford; he was riding a large gray horse and leading a mule that his son had rode to F. the horse and mule were found Tues. morning on opposite sides of the creek. The news spread rapidly. In a very short time about seventy-five men were collected at the creek, who spent the day in search for the body, but the creek being very full prevented their making any discoveries, save his hat, which was found about three-fourths of a mile below the ford at a drift. It was thought that his son was drowned too, but we leaned since that his father had left him in F., which we sincerely hope is true. Mr. BURNS left a wife and children. QUESTIONS Does the bar keeper who sold Mr. BURNS his whisky merit sad havoc or sweet reward? Does he realize the heinous crime of being instrumental in Mr. BURNS' death? Can he boast of his labor? Can he sympathize with that poor broken hearted mother? Would he donate the cost of the father's death to those little children? Would he advise the fatherless son, if he be living, to beware of strong drink, or would he rather the fatherless ones were all sons and each of them could drink death at his hands and sink into a watery grave as did their unfortunate father? Mulberry Cor. p.3 col.2 W.H. GIBBS Fatal Affray - An unfortunate difficulty occurred at Blanche, in the southwestern part of this county, on Tues., 3rd, in which W.H. GIBBS lost his life at the hands of W.P. ABERNATHY. It appears that GIBBS had ill feelings toward ABERNATHY in regard to a woman, and had declared if an opportunity presented itself he would kill ABERNATHY. Tues. evening about 3 o'clock GIBBS was standing in the drug house of BEATY & COATS, ABERNATHY went in and passed by GIBBS who picked up a weight and threw it at ABERNATHY striking him on the shoulder; it glanced and made an ugly wound on his check. GIBBS followed ABERNATHY, who is a small man, and caught hold of him; they were separated but GIBBS again got to him when ABERNAHY drew a pistol and fired three shots in succession. The first passed through GIBBS upper lip and lodged in his head, the second passed through Dr. BEATY'S coat and the third lodged in GIBBS heart. GIBBS, notwithstanding his wounds, retained his hold on ABERNATHY and was endeavoring to wrench the pistol from him, when friends interfered and again parted them. The wounded man was forced into a chair and immediately expired. The coroner's jury announced it justifiable homicide. p.3 col.5 MRS. ELIZA E.GOODRICH - Died, Dec. 5, 1879, at Fayetteville, TN. Observer - I will give you an item of news. Sad indeed. It is that in the midst of an enlightened community, in a land of civilization, that we have to chronicle the burning of a church, but such is the case. Last night, Monday, Prosperity, on the headwaters of Cold Water creek, was burned to the ground. It was the work of an incendiary. Also Mr. Matt. ALBRIGHT'S barn with all his corn, fodder and hay. The buildings stood 1/4 of a mile apart. The parties carried the bible and psalm book nearly to the barn and stuck them between the rails of a fence. Prosperity is widely known, not only in Lincoln county but all over the South. It was the work of our fathers, forty years ago. Of those who aided in erecting the building but few remain. May God interpose and bring the guilty wretches to speedy punishment. * * * FRIENDSHIP (BUCKEYE) METHODIST CHURCH Contributed by Ruth MORGAN Rt. 5, Fayetteville, TN. Copied July 1975. NOTE: The location of this church in Lincoln county was included in land given to form Moore county. Brief history compiled by Joe F. BAXTER January 13, 1955. In 1842 Rev. Joe SMITH (an uncle of the Honerable T.J. FARRIS) a Circuit Rider organized and built the Buckeye Church on the headwaters of the Buckeye branch. This building was used for both church and school. In time this log building was torn down and replaced with a nice little frame building and the name changed to "Friendship." In 1908 this building was remodeled and made larger. This building was rocked by wind and was not a suitable place in automobile day, was torn down and moved about one and one-half miles south and rebuilt at the WAGGONER Cemetery in 1928. This house was also blown down and rebuilt on the same lot in 1941. One of the early pastors of this church was the "old true gospel preacher," Rev. Jack SHASTEEN, about 1880. Some of the founders of this church were Jimmy BEDFORD, Billy LOCKE, Wyley HOBBS, Lodrick ROBERTSON, John F. BAXTER and others. This was the home of and held the membership of our beloved Superintendent A.J. DAVIS until he joined the Conference in 1919. The deceased was the brother-in-law of the man by whose hands he received his death. MCCLUSKY was immediately apprehended and is now in jail awaiting a legal investigation of his case, therefore it would be improper in us to give a relation of the circumstances. NOBLITT LETTER "Mount Carmel Baptist Church," by Haskell RODEN p.138-140 Book located in LCT Genealogical Society, Fayetteville, TN William (Bill) MARKHAM has told of his great, grandfather losing his life for the southern cause in which he believed. Parson MARKHAM left his wife and several young children to enter the war. The record is not clear as to his service as a volunteer to be a soldier or as a regular army chaplain. The record does state that he preached to the soldiers while in service. Parson MARKHAM received his mortal wounds at he battle of Perryville Kentucky in 1862. The following letter furnished by the great grandson of "Parson" MARKHAM, William (Bill) MARKHAM is self explanatory and it is very touching to read. The writer of the letter was a close friend and a former resident of the neighborhood wherein "Parson" MARKHAM resided. He also was the local "country Doctor" of the area and was the Doctor in service for these Confederate soldiers. Perryville, Kentucky Sund. Oct. 19th 1862 Feeling lonely this morning, I was led for the third time to stroll alone over the battlefield for the purpose of constructing the mournful past to the solitary present. All the dead were buried, many partially. Soon I came to the spot where poor Jones and his comrades so nobly fell, their blood is still fresh on the grass, a few steps to the left and in my advance was still to be seen the blood of Parson MARKHAM, where he lay for a short time after receiving his mortal wound of which he died on Sunday evening the 12th. He was wounded in the right arm and abdomen. He was a member of Captain Jones Company. Parson MARKHAM was a pious christian, a member of the old Baptist Organization. He had been acting in the capacity of Minister to the church to which he belonged, some four or five years. He often preached to our regiment. He lived a devout christian at all times while connected with the army. It is unnecessary to say he was a good Soldier. The time and place where he fell are more than sufficient evidence of his moral courage and patriotism. The highest qualities of a good soldier. On Sunday evening about 3 o'clock, he called me and said that he felt chilly and was suffering very much from his wounds. I went to him and found him helpless. I observed that I would give him some brandy and morphine which I thought would warm him and allay his suffering. Oh Doctor; said he, "you can never warm me again in this life," said I, "Parson we must hope for better things: and having much to do, I turned to leave the room, remembering that I would be in again soon to see him, he then observed "come as soon as you can, I want to talk to you". Soon as I could I went back to his room, it was evident that his late predictions were too true, he then asked me what I thought of his case, I told him that I had no disposition to deceive or alarm him and that my opinion was that he had but a short time to live, said he, "that is my opinion and I will tell you what I wanted, it is that I expect to die very soon. I have a request or two to make of you, after I am gone, that is if you live to get home." I told him it would afford me a great deal of pleasure to serve him in anyway that I could after his death, he then said, "I am not afraid to die." I then said to him, I believe that, for the circumstances surrounding your death are sufficient evidence to my mind that you are not afraid to die. "When you get home, go said he to see my wife and children, and tell her not to grieve for me, tell my children to be kind and obey their mother, but said he, I humbly hjope for a better world and that my death is of God, which makes it welcome to me." Doctor said he, My light is almost out, I want you to stay near me and wet my lips when I can no longer speak.? He asked me to tell him when I thought he was dying and to sit near him so that he could rest his head on my bosum, I did so, soon I saw the tide of life was fast ebbing away. "Parson" I said, are you aware of your condition? He said, "I am." I gave him some water, his eyes once more brightened, it was the last flicker of the taper, they closed as one going in to a sweet sleep. He was dead, Truly, D.J. NOBLITT. The writer of this very sad letter, Doctor David Jasper NOBLETT, was born on the 18th day of Apr. 1838 and died Jan. 25th 1899, thus at the date of writing of this letter, the young Doctor was only 24 years of age. He and his young wife, Kate BOON NOBLETT had married on the 22nd of Nov. 1860, a very short two years before. Kate BOONE was born Aug. 5th, 1832, died Feb. 18, 1905. They are buried in the Booneville Cemetery in Lincoln County. near the little village of Booneville. The cemetery and village are named for the prominent family of BOONES, of which Kate BOONE NOBLETT was a member. This BOONE family was descended from Capt. Nathan BOONE, a Revolutionary War soldier. Tradition tells us that the village of Boonshill also is named for this BOONE family. Others dispute this, they claim Boonshill is named for Boon WILSON, another prominent man that lived and died in pioneer days near the village of Boonshill. He was last seen crossing the Mississippi going to Missouri. Grandfather Lewis NEWSOM was a member of Lincoln count court a great many years. He spent most of his time untill 1860 supplying southern planters with food clothing and mules. When the war broke out in 1861 he owned 13 negroes. They all remained with him untill he died except old Jord. who joined the Yankee Army and was never heard from. Old Mammy Mariah who helped raise the family went to live with Aunt Martha WILES at the death of Grandfather. She lived to be about 96 years old. She mammied four generations of NEWSOMS. She was totally blind and helpless for several years before she died. Aunt Martha kept a nurse who remained with her after she was in this condition untill she died. BRIGHT, MG * * * TENNESSEE GAZETTEER Fayetteville Observer November 15, 1894 Ed. Observer - Recently I had the good fortune to strike one of the old books now out of print, but all the more interesting to us. It was the Tennessee Gazetteer, and contains less than 200 pages. A brief review of the early history of Tennessee is given, but too long for the present use. I noted some items relating to Lincoln county. The first Assembly (Territorial) met at Knoxville on the 4th Monday in February, 1794, but 'old' Lincoln was not in it then. The first State Assembly met at Knoxville Monday, March 28, 1796, but Lincoln was still out. Lincoln county was established in 1809, and with Davidson, Wilson, Rutherford, Williamson, Maury, Giles and Bedford formed the 4th Judicial Circuit, with Thomas STEWART as judge and Alfred BALCH attorney-general. The courts were to be held twice a year in each county. The salary of the judge was $1,000 per annum. 1815. A bank was incorporated at Fayetteville. 1817. The 6th Judicial Circuit was established; composed of Lincoln, Giles, Maury, Bedford and Lawrence, with Alfred M. HARRIS judge. The solicitor general, as he was called was Wm. B. MARTIN, (we don't refer to our clerk and master-would not intimate that he is an old man,) and had for his district Franklin, Bedford and Lincoln. 1819. James K. Polk was one of the clerks of the senate. 1822. The State was laid off into nine congressional districts; seventh, Bedford, Lincoln, Giles and Maury. 1830. Population of Lincoln: White males, 9,186; white females, 8,738; free colored, 64; slaves, 4,088. Total, 22,085. 1833. Voting population of Lincoln Co., per census, 3,379. 1834. Delegates to the constitutional convention from Lincoln and Giles, James FULTON, A.A. KINCANNON and Thomas C. PORTER, James FULTON'S name does not appear among the signers of the constitution in the Gazetteer. Bradley KIMBROUGH'S name appears as a delegate from Monroe county. In the apportionment under the ordinance following the constitution, Lincoln and Giles formed one senatorial district, the polls to be compared at the house of John KENNEDY. Lincoln elected two representatives. It gives the names of the lawyers at Fayetteville in 1833 as follows: James FULTON, Sam'l W. CARMACK, Wm. M. INGO, Wm. T. ROSS, Davis EASTLAND, John R. WILSON, Geo.A. WILSON, Arch YELL and Wm. D. THOMPSON. It says very little of Elk river and mentions only four creeks, Bradshaw, Cane, Mulberry and Swan. The following post-offices are mentioned: Boons Hill, Cane Creek, Charleston, at the mouth of Bradshaw creek, established in 1819 on the land of David COWAN, Hopewell, established in 1833, Looneyville, established in 1819 on the land of Peter LOONEY, Lynchburg, Mulberry, New Hope and Todd's established in 1833. Fayetteville has a short notice. Was established in 1809, and incorporated in 1810, population in 1833 about 800; contains two academies, two blacksmiths, one bricklayer, three carpenters, three cabinet makers, two cotton gins, one carding machine, four physicians, two clergymen, three hatters, nine lawyers, one printing office, one painter, one saddler, two shoemakers, three tailors, one tavern, and one wagon maker. It is 30 miles north from Huntsville, 73 miles south from Nashville, and 722 south-west from Washington City. Lat. 35 degrees 10 N., lon. 9 degrees 37 W. (End of article) HARDIN FAMILY Contributed by David HARDIN, Brandon, FL Mr. HARDIN'S NOTE: "My late aunt Jane FULLERTON, a HARDIN descendant, whose grandfather, Robert, was born in LCT during the 1830s, married Floyd FULLERTON, whose family came from Petersburg, but she lived all of her life in Dickson and Davidson counties. Jane, who died about ten years ago, spent the last twenty years of her life researching our family history. I have every confidence in her abilities and her evidence. She was thoroughly professional. I have come across some discrepancies: There is a disagreement on the month-but not the year-of the eldest Moses HARDIN'S death, and it is my belief from other sources that Robert HARDIN died in 1886 instead of 1885." Moses HARDIN and his family were in the area to be known as LCT by 1808, having moved there from Sumner county, TN. Two children: Stanford and Alfred, were born in Sumner prior to 1808; four others: Benjamin W.D., Wiley K., Salina, and Moses HARDIN, Jr. were born in LCT from 1808 to 1819. Moses was the son of John HARDIN (1734-1802), who was born in Isle of Wight co., VA, and died in Robertson co., TN. John and his two older brothers, Joseph and Benjamin, fought against the British and their Loyalist and Indian allies during the American Revolution while living in N.C. and their brother-in-law, Frederick HAMBRIGHT, was one of the American or rebel commanders at the Battle of King's Mountain. Joseph HARDIN, a friend of John SEVIER, was involved in the affairs of the State of Franklin after he and his two brothers moved to TN in the early 1780s, and Joseph was a member from Greene co. of the first territorial assembly that sat in 1794 and opened the way for statehood two years later (Hardin co., TN is named for Joseph). John was a farmer and surveyor in Sumner co., who had a son who was killed by Indians near Fort Blount. Moses HARDIN was the fourth child of John HARDIN, and the circumstances of his move to LCT are unknown save that it came several years after his father's death. He married Orpah HASSELL (1785-1867), who was born in Tyrrell co., NC, in 1803. Moses HARDIN was born in Burke co., NC. Moses HARDIN died in 1849, and while the specific location of his property may be difficult to find today, it is presumed from deed of sale by his heirs to be in the general location of the east fork of Norris creek. One sale of Negroes and land to Jesse S. CARRIGAN by Moses L. HARDIN, the son, in 1855 (LCT Deed Bk. V-1 p.120) of 66 A. lists as its boundaries the lands on the north of Lemuel MEAD and Elizabeth ROACH; on the east by those of Woodruff PARKS; on the south the lands of William PARKS; and on the west by those of Matt MARSHALL. Of the children of the senior Moses HARDIN, nothing is known of Stanford HARDIN much beyond the birth date of 1804. Alfred HARDIN (1806-1836) married Charlotte MCMILLEN (1808-1878) of LCT in 1831, she being the daughter of John MCMILLEN and granddaughter of William MCMILLEN, whose will was probated in LCT on Nov. 8, 1817. Charlotte and Alfred had three sons: William Stanford, John Doak-Charlotte had a brother named John Doak-and Robert Alfred, all born in LCT. Benjamin W.D. HARDIN (1808-1853) was a member of the Lincoln Guards and a quartermaster during the Mexican War. Wiley K. HARDIN (1810-unk.) sold his share of the family lands during the 1850s and moved to East Texas. Salina HARDIN (1812-1872) married Jesse CARRIGAN and had two sons: W.H. and H.M. (Wiley and Hiram), who later served in the Confederate Army. W.H. CARRIGAN married Catherine K SUMMERFORD on June 28, 1863; H.M. CARRIGAN married Frances MEAD on Feb. 28, 1867. Salina CARRIGAN and her mother, Orpah, both died in LCT, grave sites unknown. The youngest child of Moses and Orpah HARDIN, Moses L. (1819-1880), and the widow Charlotte MCMILLEN HARDIN and her three sons moved to Nashville in the mid-1850s. While they are all listed on LCT census figures of 1850, the CARRIGANS are all listed on the 1850 census for Davidson co. By 1860, the census reflects the change in both families' location. Moses was a schoolteacher and remained a bachelor. Charlotte never remarried and had her occupation listed as a seamstress and as keeping house for her sons. All of the sons worked for the railroad. William Stanford did not marry; John Doak married Elizabeth FOX but had no children. Robert married Malinda Jane "Jennie" DENTON (1849-1911) whose family had lived in LCT and had moved to Madison co., AL. Robert (1835- 1886) and Jennie, who married in 1866, had eight children, only two descendants from this branch still bear the family name. Robert and Jennie HARDIN are buried in Hutton cem. outside White Bluff, TN, grave sites unknown. Family Group Sheet: Moses HARDIN, son of John and Elizabeth KUYKENDALL HARDIN, was born in 1775 Burke co., NC; died May 12, 1849 LCT; married June 16, 1803 Sumner co., TN to: Orpah, daughter of John and Ann JENNETT HASSELL, born 1785 Tyrrell co., NC; died 1867 LCT. Their children: 1-Stanford HARDIN born 1804 Sumner co., TN; died before 1849. 2-Alfred HARDIN born Sept. 9, 1806 Sumner co., TN; died Aug. 21, 1836; married Oct. 31, 1831 to Charlotte, daughter of John MCMILLEN. Charlotte was born Jan. 1, 1808 LCT and died 1878 Nashville, TN. 3-Benj. W.D. HARDIN born 1808 LCT; died 1853; single. 4-Wiley K. HARDIN b. 1810 LCT; died Texas; married Sarah EDMISTON. 5-Salina HARDIN born 1812 LCT; died 1872; married Jesse CARRIGAN. 6-Moses HARDIN, Jr. born 1819; died 1880; single (End of article) TOWRY TRACINGS Contributed by Bill TOWRY, San Antonio, TX Recently while engaged in pursuit of old family records and history, I walked into the records room of the LCT court house and had the pleasure of seeing again a school mate of mine from grades one through twelve, Jane WARREN WALLER. As we reminisced, Jane reminded everyone that I was the meanest boy in school.* I'm sure she was right and my only possible defense would be that you had to be tough to attend 8th District School situated on a mound totally consisting of stone and nicknamed "Rocky Knob." NOTE: *The Reverend is too kind. I really said he was the 2nd meanest kid in school. My mother had the best pruned peach tree in LCT-which today is termed "child abuse." She called it "Physical Education." She was right, as I had a case of the smarts, that still guides my actions. I told Jane that Estelle and I were involved in a month of genealogy research concerning our ancestors into N.C., S.C., GA.,AL, and TN. and Jane asked for a report on some of the results. So here goes, after attending a reunion of the descendants of Roscoe and Ida WRIGHT MCALISTER at Gatlinburg, TN, on August 5-7, we moved on into Forrest City, Rutherford co., NC, and Shelby, Cleveland co., N.C. where many of our ancestral lines lived in the late 1700s and many of their descendants are still there. We met with some success in our quest for family lore and records there and then moved on to Asheboro, Randolph co., N.C. Randolph co. was formed out of the first counties our ancestors are known to have resided in and, in fact, they probably lived in as many as four or five different counties without ever having moved. At Asheboro we hit the "jack pot" for the first time. At the "Randolph Room" of the City-County Library were the most pleasant and helpful attendants imaginable. There we met a lady doing research who when she learned that we were researching the TOWRY family and related lines, told us, "My maiden name was Sarah ROBBINS and I had a grandmother TOWRY back there." We knew that Elizabeth TOWRY had married John Fletcher ROBBINS back there and were searching for information on this line. Sarah said, "You need this," and handed us a book entitled, "The ROBBINS(ROBINS) and Their Kin of Randolph co., NC, compiled by Sarah ROBBINS LEHMAN 1991. This book contains 190 pages of ancestor charts and 92 pages of pictures plus much other ROBBINS family lore. The book is out of print but we were able to secure a copy. Meeting a delightful new cousin like Sarah was a real thrill and our mutual plans are to broaden this acquaintance. Members of the Randolph County Genealogical Society staff - the "Randolph Room" and their help will make any visit there a joy. From Asheboro we proceeded to Chester co., SC, and did research at the Chester County Genealogical Society's Library at Richburg, SC, which was the area of MCALISTER ancestors. Again, we had splendid help, but not as much success as at Asheboro. We then proceeded to Augusta, GA, as we were working our way southward to Savannah, GA to see our granddaughter, Tonia, and our great, grandchildren, Morgan and Cody for a wonderful visit of several days. At Augusta, GA our quest was to try to obtain a copy of the story printed in 1793 of our 4th great grandfather Edward TOWRY'S death. We knew that he had been scalped by Indians at a location in Franklin co., GA, (now Oconee co., SC) in 1793. the staff of the Augusta Chronicle could not have been more helpful as they located the microfilm of the April 1793 issue which had reported the incident and provided us with a copy of the article. (Newspaper Article) Franklin county 17th inst. A party of Cherokees killed and scalped a man of the name of Towery of Chawgee creek, between Tugalo and Kiowee, and carried off a number of horses, desperately wounded William Flemming, on Grove fork, of broad river, who received one wound through the arm, another in his hip, a third through his thigh, and though he made his escape, we are informed he is since dead. This murder was committed by three Cherokee Indians on or near the frontiers of South Carolina. When this information was received, Gen. Twiggs, we hear, issued orders to the militia of his district, to hold themselves in immediate preparation to act according to such circumstances as might require the exertion of their valour. From Augusta we went on to Savannah and did some research while there at the Chatham County Library which contained an extensive genealogy section. Then ending the delightful visit there, we went back to the Franklin co., GA-Oconee co., SC,-area to try to locate the exact place where Edward TOWRY was killed. Representatives at the Welcome Centers on I-85 of both states were helpful and very interested in our quest. Oconee county didn't exist then and could have cared less, but at Carnesville, GA, county seat of Franklin county, the staff at the court house were very interested and pin pointed the place of the atrocity as being where the Seneca, SC Nuclear Power Plant now stands. They also informed us that the county record of the event should be available at the Archives in Atlanta, as all records for 1793 were there. (Jack TOWRY is pursuing that lead.) Our next stop was back in LCT with the wonderful kinsfolk, and friends there. We appreciated the fine assistance of Odell POSEY-also, a school mate of mine-in the Clerk and Masters office and also the assistance provided by the Archives section located in the basement of the court house as well as the help of friends and staff at the Lincoln County Genealogical Society's Library.
