"George Waller" Subject: LCT-L welcome message Date: Wed, 19 Jun 1996 00:05:22 -0400 Hi! You are subscribed to the new list for researchers interested in Lincoln County TN. Here is the welcome message. --George WELCOME to the LCT-L (Lincoln County TN) genealogical research list. LCT-L is for genealogists, historians, and anyone interested in Lincoln County, Tennessee-- the Volunteer County of the Volunteer State. I have inherited (from my mother) the habit of abbreviating Lincoln Co TN as LCT, hence the name of the list. LCT was formed in 1809 and was rapidly settled from other parts of TN as well as direct migration mostly from VA, NC, SC, and GA. By 1820, the population had swelled to about 20,000. Many of these settlers subsequently moved on to the western frontiers of TX OK AR MO IL and beyond. Others (my line for example) stayed on in LCT to the present day. LCT is in Middle Tennessee, on the Elk River, and sits on the Alabama state line. I don't think anyone famous came from LCT, but no doubt will hear otherwise very shortly :-) Many interesting publications cover aspects of LCT history and genealogy and one goal of LCT-L will be to create a bibliography of these publications and "who owns what." I try to maintain an abbreviated list of researchers, postal addresses, and surname interests and hope to continue this and post it occasionally. New subscribers will want to introduce themselves to the group and describe their interests. Again, welcome to the list. --George Here are some of the administratrivia that goes with any electronic list: Some lists are slow, so give your mail a day or so, especially if you are in digest mode. The list is not moderated. Any message sent to it is automatically bounced back out to everyone on the list. While I in no way want to stifle free discussion, as list owner I reserve the right to step in if a flame war erupts that becomes tedious for other subscribers, or if someone becomes unseemly (use of profanity, for instance). To post a message to the list: send it to LCT-L@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu (note: this is the address to which you send genealogical messages) The following are computer commands which help you control your subscription. Send commands to MAISER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu. MAISER is short for Mail Server. When sending commands to MAISER, it helps if you can turn off your "automatic signature" if you have one. To unsubscribe: Send a message to MAISER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu with UNSUB LCT-L in the body of the message (not the subject line). (If you have trouble unsubscribing, please let me know at: gwaller@lib.uconn.edu. If I don't answer, try the "big guy" Larry Stephens at LVS@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu) To set digest mode: Send a message to MAISER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu with SET LCT-L DIGEST in the body If you have an "automatic signature" it will help if you "turn it off" when sending messages to MAISER. To go back to regular mail mode: Send a message to MAISER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu with SET LCT-L MAIL in the body. To request a list of subscriber addresses: Send a message to MAISER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu with REVIEW LCT-L in the body. First, I am looking for information on the VASSER family, who came from to the Carolinas to Monroe Co., near Sweetwater. John Vasser (1832-1884) served in the 62nd Mounted Infantry from there. His father, John Vasser (1806-1894) was also in Monroe county in 1850. There is some anecdotal evidence that the elder John's father was George Vasser. John Sr. said in 1880 that he was born in NC, and his parents were Virginians. What kind of records/genealogical information does Monroe county have? Next, I am searching for any information on the following Lincoln county families: Francis SMITH, Joseph SCOTT, and THOMPSON. The Smiths were in Lincoln county about 1830, and remained there the rest of their lives. Francis Smith died in 1868 and his wife Fanny Gray Smith died in 1871. Joseph Scott married Francis and Fanny's daughter, Sarah Emily Smith, who died in 1848. He then remarried Rebeckah Brimm, and I last found them in 1870, Lincoln county. As for the Thompsons, My great grandfather, William Warren Thompson, was born in Lincoln county in 1842, and was a confederate veteran. They moved to Texas and then Oklahoma, where he died in 1930. On his death certificate, his father's name was given as Warren Thompson. He married Fanny Gray on July 1, 1812. The family was in Lincoln County, TN by 1830. Their children included Austin Gray Smith, William Smith, Sarah Emily Smith, Jane Rachel Smith. Austin's son, William Cephus Smith, rode with Forrest in the Civil War. In his obituary in 1930, Senatobia, MS, it was said that he was "scion of a long line of clergymen and educators from VA." I realize this is nebulous information, but it's all I've got. Francis died in 1868, and Fanny in 1871. Francis may have had an "old maid" sister named Nancy who lived with them, and later with Jane Smith Ramsey. Nancy died in 1862 at 75 years old, which would make her born about the same time as Francis. JOSEPH SCOTT AND SARAH SMITH SCOTT. Sarah Smith Scott died in 1848, and Joseph remarried Rebeckah Brimm, don't know much about them after that. I haven't proven it, but am firmly convinced due to circumstantial evidence that my great grandmother, Josephine Scott, was a daughter of Joseph Scott and Sarah Emily Smith. In the bible records of Francis Smith, her name does not appear, but the name of her first son, Don Albert Thompson, does appear. Also, in the 1850 and 1860 LCT census, Josephine, or Joselia, was living with Thomas Ramsey and Jane Smith Ramsey. Jane and Sarah Smith were sisters, both daughters of Francis and Fanny. Also, Sarah Jane Scott, a child of Joseph and Sarah, was raised by Francis and Fanny. So, logically, I know my Josephine is in this family, I just haven't found the vital link yet. Finally, Josephine Scott married a William Warren Thompson in 1868 LCT. On his death certificate in Oklahoma, his father's name was given as Warren Thompson, born TN. Haven't been able to find anything on this line. W.W. Thompson was a CSA soldier in the 55th/44th TN Infantry partly formed from men from LCT. Thus far, attempts to conclusively link either of them to the families of the same names residing in LCT have not been successful. From the census records, Drury was born in VA about 1790. He was in LCT in 1814 according to records that we have found: Pvt. and Fifer in the Capt. Thomas DELANY's Co. of Inf., 2 Regiment of the West Tennessee Militia, Col. LOWERY and Lt. Col. HAMMONS - Sept. 20, 1814 to Apr. 10, 1815. Signed power of attorney to Jas. HANNA or Thomas C-?-?-? to collect from Joseph Colman(?),paymaster of the State of Tennessee, the monies, etc. due from the United States, 9th day of Jun1815, Lincoln Co., TN; witnessed by Hugh M. BLAKE. Next we find Drury in AL near the YEAGERS who came to LCT about 1810 and who then went to Bibb Co., AL from LCT about 1818-19. Drury was in Bibb Co. in 1822, then Tuscaloosa Co. and Greene Co. moving on then to MS and AR. His wife was Celia or Selah __________, (It appears both ways in documents. There is generally little documentation on Elijah West YEAGER; nothing at all (that I know of) has been found on his having owned land, on his parentage, or his marriage. We know his wife's name (Ann Elizabeth or Elizabeth Ann SHELTON, daughter of Drury SHELTON) but there is nothing known on exactly where and when they were married, but it was probably in AL since their first child was born in AL or MS because their first child was born in MS in 1838. It appears to me that there is some relationship between Elijah West YEAGER and the YEAGERs of LCT and Bibb Co. because when he first came to TX from AR, he went first to Tyler, Smith County, where Gabriel Perry YEAGER (son of Abijah, of Bibb Co.) and William (possibly son of William of GA, brother of Abijah). William in 1850 census of Smith Co., TX was born about 1817 in GA] were or were soon to be; all three were in the 1860 census. No other reason has been found for Elijah West YEAGER to go to Tyler. Also earlier, the 1838 the tax rolls of Leake County, Mississippi, showed Drury SHELTON, John YEAGER, Elijah YEAGER and Mucklin YEAGER;1839 Drury SHELTON and E. Yagor; 1840, Elijah YEAGER;1841, ElijahYagor; and 1843 L.W. YEAGER and Eligah YEAGER. Mucklin and John YEAGER are believed to be sons of Ezekiel, another brother of Abijah and L. W. Yeager could possibly be Lewis Winston, son of Abijah The 1840 Leake County, Mississippi, census shows an E. YEAGER with 1 male under 5 (could be Abner), 1 male 15 to 20 (brother or nephew??), 1 male 30 to 40 (Elijah), 1 female under 5 (maybe Eliza; her birth year is not that solid), and 1 female 20 to 30 (Ann Elizabeth). The 1846 Lauderdale County, Mississippi, tax roles show Larkin SHELTON, Wm. SHELTON, John SHELTON, Elijah/Elisha YEAGER and John YEAGER/Yearger. I would appreciate any clues that anyone offers. C. To both be in Lincoln Co., they are surely related. There is also a will of a Soloman REESE who left land to his seven kids of his first wife. He never names the 7 kids or his first wife, but his second wife is Mahala. Does anyone know of this family??? I am working on this with another cousin in VA. We would appreciate any information you could give us. *********************************************************************** Sherry S.
