My problem is that I live in New Hampshire, probably never will be able to get down to Lincoln County, Tennessee, and so I don't know how or where to get help. I don't know if anyone would be willing or able to actually search for my particular line of Clarks, but if anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it. How much do you think it will cost me to get this kind of help? I think I told you before that my great, great grandfather was a John Clark who was born in Lincoln County, TN in 1790 and married an Elizabeth Mackie. I've been to the local Family History Center a couple of times, but have not come up with anything. Carolyn Sue Howard (I go by Sue) ---------- End of message ---------- From: "George Waller at Home" Subject: Re: Lincoln County, Tennessee - Clark Family Date: Thu, 1 Aug 1996 16:48:41 -0400 Hi Sue, The only comment I could make about your Clarks is that to the best of my knowledge, there is not much likelihood that your John Clark was born in LCT in 1790. I don't think any permanent settlers were there before (someone help me here) 1800? Ok, here is something else: Lincoln Co TN Pioneers vol IX, no 2 (Dec 1979), p. 49 Mrs. W.W. Clark, 101 N. Leake St, Clinton MS 39056 writes a query asking for ancestry of this John and Elizabeth. She says he was born in SC, he d 1837 and the widow and 10 ch moved to Mississippi. Could someone recommend the name of a professional researcher in LCT for Sue? Good luck, George (and please, everyone, call me George, or Tony... anything but Mr. :-)))) ---------- End of message ---------- From: sdavis@ruf.rice.edu (Sandy Davis) Subject: Re: Lincoln County, Tennessee - Clark Family Date: Fri, 2 Aug 1996 10:16:49 -0600 I am in Houston and used a professional genealogist named Frances West to pull records on my Isom line in Lincoln Co., TN. She was exceptionally thorough and her price was extremely fair (I don't remember how much, but extremely reasonable). As a matter of fact, she was already familiar with my Isom clan as she has done research for others on this line in the past. I was referred to her by a woman at the County Clerks office who told me they were backed up two years on their genealogy records requests and that if I wanted to expedite it, to contact Frances. All I have is her address: Frances West, 108 Wallace, Fayetteville, TN 37334. You might write her and see if she has time to take your project on. I have three filing cabinet drawers full of deeds, legal documents, marriage license, cemetery records, etc. she sent me. I also got a letter this week from a woman in Arkansas who is using Frances to research her Isom line and Frances gave her my address as promised, should anybody researching my line come her way. She is a doll and easy to work with. Drop her a line and see, or call the County Clerk's office and see if they have her phone number. ---------- End of message ---------- From: "Bill Couch" Subject: Re: Lincoln County, Tennessee - Clark Family Date: Fri, 2 Aug 1996 12:37:07 CST > I am in Houston and used a professional genealogist named Frances West to > pull records on my Isom line in Lincoln Co., TN. Cornelius Wesley McGuire (1801-1859) and his wife Sarah MELONEY McGuire (1805-1874) supposedly had 14 children. One of these was my ancestor SARAH L. (LUCINDA) McGUIRE born c 1828-30 who married James C. Butler on 15 Oct 1846 in Lincoln Co. (The marriage entry names him erroneously as BEELER) Other sources I have corresponded with say that Cornelius and Sarah also had ANOTHER DAUGHTER named LUCINDA who married 12-24-1865 M.H. HICKS. No one seem sto have dates of birth etc for this Lucinda; I think it unlikely that CW would have 2 daughters named LUCINDA. I cannot locate James C Butler, his wife Sarah Lucinda, or their children Sarah and Cornelius Butler anywhere after 1860 census of Lincoln Co TN. I have checked indexes and census of almost all surrounding states. JAMES ALWAYS went by JC or James C, not just by James. I am now wondering if JC Butler DIED before 1865 and LUCINDA is his widow, remarrying to MH HICKS??? Anyone have any info they can share?? I am looking at Lincoln County as a probable location for relations. I first noted James GEORGE in the 1850 Census for Izard County, Arkansas. The middle initial, "S", only appeared in the last known census record for James (1870 - Izard County). The following was found in the 1850 census: Dwelling/Family 57 57 James GEORGE 46 M Farmer Tennessee Margarett 42 F " Benjamin 18 M Farmer " Pennelia C. 15 F " Martha C. 12 F " Sarah 10 F " Rachael C. 7 F Arkansas Richard 4 M " Robert H. 2 M " Living nearby was a most probably related family. Robert H. eventually married a neighbor of this family: 189 189 Rachael GEORGE 67 F Virginia Newton 17 M Mississippi 190 190 Nancy GEORGE 48 F South Carolina Thomas 24 M Alabama Marianda? 21 F Tennessee Catherine 18 F Tennessee Susan 16 F Tennessee John H. 14 M Tennessee Benjamin 12 M Tennessee Andrew J. 9 M Arkansas Richard F. 7 M Arkansas These names in these families correlate very strongly with the names in the family groups I mentioned in the previous letter. I could not find a good match for this James in the census, but it is likely that family members lived in Lincoln County. For example, in the 1850 census for Lincoln County, Tennessee Thomas GEORGE has the following children (p 72): John, Benjamin C., Martha F. Mary A., Newton J., Thomas B., David In the 1820 census for Lincoln County, the names associated with this family are Bejamin, James, Richard, Thomas, and William. I hope more of us will take the time to share what we have and what we are looking for. The only Elizabeth Harrison I found was in the Marsh LCT Cemeteries book, page 200: Solomon Cemetery (Fayetteville #48) Elizabeth Harrison Oct 27, 1787 - May 22, 1855. No other Harrisons in that cemetery. No indication why she was buried there. Curlee and Julia (___) Curlee of Cannon Co. If not, please let me know. George p.s. I recall a previous post about Dr Curlee... perhaps it was on TNROOTS? Suggestions? I descend from the unrelated Samuel JONES (1777NC-1877LCT) and John JONES (1752DE-1831LCT). Your Andrew JONES is not listed in the 1820 LCT census, but a James is. Could you post to the group the children of Andrew. This is a gap in my ongoing collection of info on 1820 residents of LCT. Am also appending some info that I sent to him privately. George Don said: I goofed about one thing when I posted that note. My Marshs were in Lincoln Co., Tn., before 1820, as Rayford & some of the others are listed on it. By 1830, he was in Madison Co, Ill. & on the 1840, he was in Greene Co., Ill., where he died. I am trying to find out where Rayford & his wife Lydia (unknown) were married. I've been told that the earliest Marriage records in Lincoln co., Tn., are about 1838, which doesn't help me as they were probably married about 1819-20. I've been told that all Marsh family in Lincoln Co., Tn., came from Surry Co., NC., & settled near Booneville, Lincoln Co., Tn. I am also interested in Carriger family in Lincoln Co., Tn. Leonard Carriger's wife was Sylvania Marsh, who I think was a sister to Rayford Marsh. Leonard & Sylvania also came to Greene Co., Ill and are buried there. A history of Greene Co,, Ill., states that Leonard & Sylvania were married in Lincoln Co., Tn 06 March, 1823. Leonards parents, Nicholas Carriger & Catherine Millard may have died in Lincoln Co. Tn. Thanks again for your help. Don To which I (George Waller) replied: p.s. I find in the LCT Pioneers v.15, p.44: (Taken from the Fayetteville Observer Jan. 13, 1886): [family reunion] "By consulting the family record, we find the following at the head: 'At the bride's father's, Nicholas Cariger, by the Rev. Hardy Holman, married, Samuel Boone to Cynthia Cariger, July 3rd, 1823.'" ... [Cynthia Cariger] Boone age 84, [brother] Christian Cariger age 76. ---------- End of message ---------- From: ACOOLING@SunBelt.Net Subject: Re: CRAWFORD-BEARD, Lincoln Co.
