Postings to the now defunct LCT-L@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu September 1996 (112 postings) From: RWHitzman@aol.com Subject: Garner/Woodruff Connections Date: Sun, 1 Sep 1996 03:25:14 -0400 I can contribute a possible connection between the Garners of Sumner Co., TN and the Woodruffs of Lincoln Co. in the early 1810s. There is a marriage record for Benjamin Woodruff to POLLY GARNER on 8 Mar 1816 in Sumner Co. William Woodruff (my 3rd gr grandfather) married Tildy Ferguson in Sumner Co. on 19 Dec 1809. William Woodruff was the son of Benjamin Woodruff who moved to Lincoln Co. in 1810 and died there in 1835. William, his wife Matilda and their children moved from Lincoln Co. to Washington County, Arkansas about that time. Benjamin Woodruff Jr. has been identified as the son of Benjamin by Audrey Woodruff in her book on the Woodruffs of NC. I have written for a copy of the 1827 estate papers for Benjamin and wife Polly at the Sumner Co. archives but have not received them yet. Audrey Woodruff identified the following children of Benjamin Jr. and Polly: c.1. James Wilson Woodruff (d. before 1865) c.2. Wesley Woodruff (d. before 1865) c.3. Robert W. Woodruff (d. before 1865) c.4. Matilda Woodruff (m. Robert McMullin/residing in Lincoln Co., TN in 1865) Note: Another source lists sons as James, Wilson and Wesley If this is helpful, I'd be happy to exchange further information - Rebecca Hitzman, Tulsa ---------- End of message ---------- From: Robert McAlister <73564.1471@CompuServe.COM> Subject: McAlister Gen. My gggrandfather was Thomas GRANT, b. @1778 in VA. He married (by 1834) Frances "Frankie" DICKEY (b. 1797 in KY); they were landowners in Lincoln County. Their children were: Elizabeth Mary Jane GRANT, b. @1834 in TN George Harrison GRANT, b. 1835 in TN Charlotte Catherine GRANT, b. @1836 in TN Virginia Frances GRANT, b. @1838 in TN Thomas GRANT died at age 72 in May 1850. His will names his wife Frances and the above children. A record of his death lists him as a farmer, who died of a chronic condition. The executor of Thomas' will was C. W. MCGUIRE. Witnesses to his will were Josiah MCCRACKEN and Joseph MCCOY. Sometime later, Thomas' son George GRANT was the executor of the Joseph MCCOY estate in Giles County. Frances "Frankie" GRANT (nee DICKEY) died sometime after 1880, as she is listed (age 84) in the census of Lincoln Co. that year in the household of her son, George. Her death was probably before 1887, as that is when George and his family sold their land and headed west. George H. GRANT served as a TN Volunteer in the 3rd (Brown's) Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment, organized May 16, 1861 at Lynnville,Giles Co., TN He married Mary Jane BROOKS (b. 1850 in AR) on Feb. 10, 1868. George Harrison Grant was in the Millville District #16, Lincoln Co., TN, in 1880 as he voted in November of that year in District #16. A Bible reference reads as follows: --------------------- BIBLE OF H. H. HARRISON In possession of Mr. U. L. Harrison, Route #6, Fayetteville, TN. Published by Thomas Nelson & Sons, New York, (no date). Copied by Mrs. Walton R. Tucker and Mrs. John T. Malone, Jr. Mr. J. H. Harrison and Miss C.C. Grant were united in Holy Matrimony on March 6th, 1865 at the home of Mrs. Frances Grant, Lincoln, Tenn. ----------------------- Miss C. C. GRANT is without a doubt Thomas and Frankie's daughter, Charlotte Catherine. Land records show that Thomas GRANT bought land from the estate of James GRANT (administrator was Benjamin WHITAKER) in Aug. 1841. This was a 138 acre tract that spanned the Lincoln and Giles Co. border. Is there a family connection between Thomas and James? This same tract was sold by Thomas' son, George GRANT, in Nov. 1887 to W. T. MERRILL. At this time, George and his wife Mary Jane took their family to TX, thence to OK in the early 1890s. Any information relevant to this research would be greatly appreciated. I am especially interest in tracing the ancestry of Thomas GRANT and Frances DICKEY. Lookups Dear George: Following is the information I have concerning the families of Jesse and Benjamin Woodruff. I have copies of the entries regarding these families in the early Lincoln Co. court records (1810-1826), as well as military and pension papers. I have requested copies of the estate papers of Benjamin Woodruff who died ca 1827 in Sumner Co. from the Sumner Co. Archives. After the information about the Woodruffs, I have listed some somewhat specific lookup requests. Jesse Woodruff arrived in Lincoln Co. around 1807. He was born in Spotsylvania, VA in 1757, married Esther Buchanan (dau. of ROBERT BUCHANAN/LCT) in Washington Co. VA in 1783, and died in Lincoln Co. in 1826. He was active in the early government of Lincoln Co. His children include Mary, Susanna, William B. (m. Jane Wilson), Nancy (m. ____ King), Martha (m. Thomas Parker) and Elizabeth (m. JOHN FERGUSON). Benjamin Woodruff arrived in Lincoln Co. around 1810. He was born in 1759 in Brunswick Co., VA, married (1st) Elizabeth Rivers Bass (dau. of William Rivers, widow of Henry Bass) in 1786 in Greensville Co., VA, and (2nd) Sarah Gilbert, widow, in 1825 in Lincoln Co. He died in Lincoln Co. in 1836. According to his Rev. pension application, he had brothers named Wilson and George. (per pension app.) Benjamin was made guardian of the two small children of Henry and Elizabeth BASS (Rhoda and Polly) (Equity Book, Lincoln Co. 1819-1829). Rhoda Bass m. Nathaniel Kendrick and Polly Bass m. James Byran. They brought suit against Benjamin concerning his performance as guardian in the estate of their father. (per Joyce Woodruff Terrana) I do not yet have copies of these papers. Benjamin moved to Georgia in 1790 and received 2 draws as a married man in the George Land Lottery in 1805. He moved to Sumner Co., TN in 1807 and settled in Lincoln Co. 1810. (from pension app.) Benjamin applied for a pension in 1832 at age 72 and received 45.00 annually. Five years later, after his death, Sarah applied for her rights as his widow. Twenty years later, in 1857, she requested that her pension be forwarded to Coffee Co, where she was living with her only son George G. (Gilbert?) Woodruff. After her death in 1865, he applied for the "back pension" due her. He appears to be a step-son of Benjamin's who took the name Woodruff. (from pension app.) At the time of his death, Benjamin owned 143 acres of land, situated in Civil Dist. No. 9, on the headwaters of Cane Creek, of which 82 acres became the property of his widow Sarah. After her death in 1865, Elizabeth A. PATTERSON (a granddaughter of Benjamin's) brought suit regarding these 82 acres. These papers are reportedly among the "loose papers" which were stored in the basement of the courthouse before renovation in 1973. I do not have a copy of these papers and do not know where they are stored now. (per Audrey Woodruff/and old newpaper abstracts) Benjamin's children (per Audrey Woodruff): 1. Benjamin Woodruff, Jr. m. Probably Polly GARNER, Sumner Co. 1816 d. Prior to 1865 c.1. James Wilson Woodruff (d. before 1865) c.2. Wesley Woodruff (d. before 1865) c.3. Robert W. I believe that the associations of Jesse and Benjamin in Lincoln Co. argues that they were closely related (such as the intermarriage of their children with the Ferguson family and the move to NW Arkansas of some of the LCT Woodruffs, Fergusons and Buchanans in the 1830s). I am also trying to document material that was collected by my mother and aunt over the past many years. When convenient, could you please check your early Lincoln Co. resources for any Woodruffs through 1870, as well as Robert Buchanan and John Ferguson? BOLIN - Seeking parents of Harvey BOLIN, born (probably Moore Co.) 1874; married Hulda Alma PIERCE in Moore Co., 1895. Two sons, Chester Carl and Dewey Hobson. In 1900, he is on the census of Moore Co. with his wife and sons. In August 1900, he killed a man, and then disappears. An Old Timer seemed to think that Harvey was the son of Will BOLIN - who may have been the son of Jeremiah BOLIN. There were several William BOLINs in Moore and surrounding counties. According to the Old Timer, Harvey went to his father's house after the murder, hid out a few days, and then together they walked to Alabama. From there he may have gone to Texas or Oklahoma. We simply do not know what happened to him after the murder; and we have not been able to find any evidence whatsoever of Harvey's parents, other than the Old Timer's word. In 1880 census of Lincoln Co., there is a Harvey, age 7, who may be "my" Harvey, in the household of Pinkney Bolin. Pinkney and his wife are too old to be this child's parents. No relationship is given in the census. Can anybody solve any of these mysteries?

For many years in most Southern states (maybe others for all I know) a young man had to post a bond to guarantee there was no impediment to the marriage, such as another wife left behind, etc. This was simply a guarantee of payment if somebody discovered something detrimental. I have never heard of one actually being collected. If this was not a bond, then I have no idea...that is a lot of money even at this time! I would be interested in what you find out. There is a Bible record for the family of James Clark (LCT Bibles 1:61) which shows that John Clark was born 13 Sep 1790 and married Elizabeth Mekes 14 Jul 1814. It appears this is your John Clark from what you wrote below and if you don't already have the Bible info I'll send it along. On the bad news side, there is a reference to a court suit in LCT 1838 in which John and Elizabeth's children are listed and the last one is Samuel W. Clark not E. Samuel Clark (LCT Pioneers 2:25). Finally, LCT Pioneers 9:49 has a query from Mrs. W.W. Clark of Clinton MS citing info corresponding to that you mention below. Please let me know what you lack. You found my John Clark on your subject list. I had heard that he might have been born in South Carolina, and you were right when you told me before that he probably was not in Lincoln County in 1790. The birth date and death date are correct for my John Clark so I am positive that this is the right one. I also recently had some information from Kay Pecheco in Texas. She looked up in the "Land Deed Genealogy of Lincoln County, Tennessee, 1809-1818, Vol. 1" the fact that John Clark had a deed from Jesse Clark of Franklin County, Georgia for 242 acres of land in LCT and adjoining John Silvertooth's corner and William Brown's line and Crawford's line. Witnesses: Samuel Yeates, Levy C. Taylor and Benjamin Grindle. Registered 2nd September 1815". And from "Early Unpublished Court Records of Lincoln County, Tennessee: Guardian & Settlement Records, 1838-1846" shows on page 186 where John Cochran became a guardian for the minor heirs of John Clark", Also on page 254 and page 313, where it mentions his wife, Elizabeth Clark (which is the right name) being paid for Thomas, Sarah, Samuel and William Clark on March 12, 1846. Also the children's names that were mentioned were all correct. Also in the Guardian Settlement Book, 1847-1852, the same kind of information was given. The names of John and Elizabeth Clark's children were Henry, Nancy, James, Robert, Joseph, William, Thomas, Hugh, Sarah, and E. Samuel. E. Samuel was my great grandfather, one of the younger ones who went with his mother to Neshoba County, Mississippi. I'm sure it must have been a terrible thing to have to leave most of her children in Tennessee with a guardian, but after John Clark's death in 1837, Elizabeth probably could not take care of them. I don't know why she would go down to MS. But anyway, I guess that's why I became born in Mississippi. Does any of this help me to find out even more now? I would love to know who John and Elizabeth's parents were and where they came from originally. Elizabeth's maiden name was Mackie (or it could have even been McKie, perhaps). After I found my John Clark on the 1820 Census List for LCT and it said that he was born in SC, I started trying to find something or somebody there who could help me. A Jean Fountain from Ft. Mill, SC responded to me (I can't remember exactly how I found her). She said in the York County Library there was a 66-page book on the "Clark Family From York County, South Carolina to Lincoln County, Tennessee, to Neshoba County, Mississippi" compiled by a Woodrow Wilson Clark, Jr. She is sending me a few pages that she has copied. When I can afford to do it, I am going to have her copy the whole book. She said she was a free-lance genealogist and she seems very nice. If anybody would like to know more about her, let me know. George, you had said in your message to me of 9/19/96 that you would send along the Bible information you had found in LCT Bible 1:61 of James Clark - some record of a marriage, I believe of John Clark and Elizabeth Mekes (I guess they didn't how to spell McKee). I will have to gather my notes, but would be willing to share my information with you. I do not have a firm connection between my GEORGE line of Northern Arkansas and the LCT branch, but some clues point in that direction. My gg-grandfather, Andrew GEORGE, was born in TN about 1822. He first shows up in the Izard Co., Arkansas, census of 1850. He probably moved to Arkansas about 1841. James S. GEORGE and his wife Margaret were living nearby. James was born in TN about 1804. None of these individuals seem to appear in the LCT census reports prior to 1850. However, there is a high correspondence between the names of their children and the first names of the GEORGEs in LCT. My guess is that Benjamin GEORGE of LCT, who moved to Haywood Co, TN, by 1830, may have been the patriarch of the family. My guess is that James and Andrew were brothers. I am currently checking out the Arkansas records in detail and am spot checking some films of LCT at the local FHC. The information that I have on her is that she was born Dec 7, 1834, Swan Cr, Lincoln Co. Tn. She was still alive in 1916. She was living with distant relatives in Memphis when she died. Public records in that county do not have a death certificate. John McDaniel: b. 2/18/1808; married Mary Edmondson, May 1830, died Oct. 1861. John McDaniel was the son of Fielding McDaniel. I am not sure what is considered proof in genealogical terms. The only information I have is what I have given. Thank you ahead of time. Sincerely, E. McDaniel. Early Unpublished Court Records of LCT, p. 25, says: Thomas Wakefield and John McDaniel, executors of Fielding McDaniel, deceased. Other Names: H.C. Cowan, E.R. McDaniel, C. ?. McDaniel, John and Robert McDaniel - Dec. 23, 1843. John McDaniel guardian for Coleman A. McDaniel, son of F. McDonald, Jr., dec'd, and John and Robert McDaniel, sons of A.B. McDaniel, dec'd. - Jan. 1, 1844 That's it. Just a tidbit. MATTIE PHAMILIA SMITH b. 7-3-1863 either in Millville, TN, Lincoln Cty. or in Giles Cty. She married JAMES EMMETT MOYERS in Giles Cty. 4-8-1883 and lived for some years in Bunker Hill, Giles Cty., before moving to Texas. Is she the daughter of James Smith & Martha who lived near Pulaski? They were shown on 1870 census as having a daughter Mattie of the correct age for Mattie Phamilia. Any help on this will be greatly appreaciated as she was my grandmother. The book "Art Mystery of Tennessee Furniture It's Makers Through 1850" by Derita Codeman Williams Nathan Harsh states that GEORGE W. MOYERS of Fayetteville, TN had been quoted by the Lincoln Journal, Oct 22, 1846 discussing the exhorbitant prices for undertaking. The book also has a great deal about GEORGE W. MOYERS of Grainger County who was an undertaker and cabinetmaker and whose brother-in-law was Fleming K. Rich of Wytheville, Virginia. This George's father was Thomas Moyers of Wytheville. I have located information that would indicate that GEORGE W. MOYERS of Grainger Cty. remained there. If anyone can check the Lincoln Journal to determine if the name is correct it would help as PETER W. MOYERS was an undertaker/cabinetmaker in Fayetteville in the 1840s 50s 60s. Any information on any of the above individuals will be sincerely appreciated. ---------- End of message ---------- From: "Robert B. His daughter Rhoda PULLEY married Jessey NOLES circa 1828. Can anyone provide me with the 1820 Census information for Thomas PULLEY? We signed up late last night, Nevada time and I want to make sure I gave the correct addresses. I am researching Mary Louisa McDaniel Wilson. My email is eas@llv.com or GSloan2376@aol.com. I hope I didn't flub up because I am new at the computer and genealogy. The reason for this email, is that your note is to Rob about the Pulley family? I also have something for Robert B. Noles, who may be Rob. I am very confused. Sorry if I made an error, please let me know and I will change what needs to be changed. I am leaving very early in the morning to do research with my dad and will be gone for the week. If something needs to be "fixed" at my end of the machine, I will have to do it next week end. Email lists are a bit confusing, but you haven't done anything wrong. This list (LCT-L) is set up so that all replies go back to the whole list. We are such a small group and have such a narrow focus that the traffic is light. The other reason for sending info to the whole email list is that an archive of all messages is stored on a computer in Indiana. One day soon, I will put the archives up on the web so we can easily search it. Right now the process is tedious. If you want to know how to access the LCT-L archives, send the text HELP to MAISER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu George p.s. lest anyone think I oppose private email on LCT subjects... that is not the case at all. There are very good reasons why someone might prefer private email in some cases. ---------- End of message ---------- From: Marion Harris Subject: Lincoln County/Dever Date: Sun, 29 Sep 96 11:40:05 -0700 I am researching the Dever (Deaver)(Devers) family in Lincoln County.
