Lincoln co., TN Pioneers has 9 pages of GEORGE data in Vol. XXIV June 1995. It starts with William & Lucia STEPHENS GEORGE. Wm. born 1756. Have you seen that? Jane Waller Hi, I have begun to add selected notes about the GEORGE surname in Tennessee. The first part of this effort will be focused on Lincoln County. There is only a small amount of information now, but more is being added. Monte George -- End of message -- From: "Jane W. My gr-gr was Simon Dever who is not listed in the 1820 census as he would have been about 14. There is also a Nathan Dever who left with Simon in approx 1840 who went to Hopkins County KY together. Any info is greatly appreciated. Not sure who Amos Dever is and also the connection to the Dillenger family. Thank you. Marion C. Harris, Coos Bay, OR Marion, I do not have a DEVER line just interested in Lincoln co., TN Hope the following answers some of your questions. Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri Mississippi co., p.971 John P. DEVER was born in Lincoln county, Tenn. January 9, 1833, and is a son of Amos and Mary DILLENDER DEVER, of French descent. The grandfather DEVER was a Kentuckian and the maternal grandparents were old Virginians. Amos DEVER was a farmer by vocation, and lived and died in Lincoln County, Tenn.; however he was born in Kentucky, in which state he remained until after his marriage. He and his wife were the parents of seven children: Nathan, Joseph, Elijah, Henry, Mary, Abijah and John T. The last named was reared on a farm in his native state, partially learned his trade there. His father died when he was but seven years old and at the age of seventeen years he went to Adams County, Ill., where he worked on a farm for four years, after which he went to Hopkins County, Ky. and remained several years engaged in various occupations, working on a farm at his trade and sawmilling. In 1876 he removed to Batesville, Ark., in which place he was engaged in blacksmithing and wagon work until April 1884, when he came to Charleston. Since removing to the latter city he has been engaged in blacksmithing and wagon manufacturing under the firm name of J.P. DEVER & Sons. The two sons who are his partners are John L. and Linn M. In 1887 Mr. DEVER erected a planing mill, which he has since successfully conducted. In 1857 he wedded Charlotte W. PARENT, a native of Kentucky, by whom he had nine children, three of whom are living: John L., Linn M. and Mary E. This wife died in 1875, and in 1876 he married Louisa WRIGHT, a native of Ark. One child has been born to his union, Roy L. Mrs. DEVER is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is a Mason. Lincoln co., TN Deed Bk.E p.83 Amos witnessed a deed for Joseph DILLENDER of Lincoln co., TN on Mar. 15, 1818. Land on West Mulberry creek. Judge Don Holman is a descendent of the 'other' Daniel Holman. I have their family tree and wish I could claim it. 'Their' Daniel Holman was the son of OLD Isaac Holman and my Daniel Holman was the son of Isaac's brother OLD Thomas Holman. From the time of Daniel Pearson Holman's marriage, I'm satisfied with my tree as it goes forward, it's only finding Daniel P. Holman's father that is my stumbling block. There doesn't appear to be any listing of the children of Isaac Holman who died LCT 1834. The Texas DAR has a printed list but it is entirely incorrect as the children they listed are the children of this Isaac's UNCLE Isaac, and some are older than the Isaac Holman who d in LCT in 1834. I don't know how the TX DAR happened to get involved as I don't believe that Isaac ever resided in TX according to his Rev. War pension request. Oh, yes, another son of JAMES WILSON and MARGARET McELROY was GREEN WILSON, who was purportedly counterfeiting gold pieces like crazy all during the time that his brother ALFRED was the first federal prosecutor for the Western District of Arkansas, and ALF truly was the first federal prosecutor there--I work in the U.S. Attorney's office in Tulsa, and in a history we have of U.S. Attorneys'' offices ALF is truly listed as the first prosecutor in that district. Another son of JAMES and MARGARET was JAMES IRVINE WILSON who married JOSEPHINE PINSON and who resided in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, and another daughter, maybe NANCY (or ANN) (can't remember for sure and do not have the records in front of me) married WILLIAM NEELD, a tailor, and they remained in Lincoln County. I need information on their descendants. Any help appreciated, and will gladly exchange. We have a lot of early family letters. One as early as 1836 from Alf Wilson in Ark to brother James I. in Mississippi. (d. abt 1836 in LCT)and his wife, Hulda (Ellis) Neece (b. 1786 in Jefferson Co, TN) (d. Nov 1861 Lawrence Co, MO) migrated to LCT from Jefferson Co, TN about 1811-12 with six of their eventual fourteen children and settled on the west waters of the east fork of Mulberry Creek. Their migration was with other families including her parents James Ellis and Sarah (Riggs) Ellis and their family. The Neece family names are found on 2 church rolls in LCT: the Mt Moriah Primitive Baptist (1833) and Lincoln County Church of Christ. Of their fourteen children I descend from the roots of their tenth child, Jesse. I understand some of John & Huldah's children's descendants are still in LCT. I will list below their 14 children: Robert N. Neece (b 25 Mar 1801 Jefferson Co, TN, m. abt 1821 LCT, d.13 Jan 1851 Green Co, IL) Ellis Neece (b. 2 Oct 1803 Jefferson Co, TN, m. LCT, d. 21 Jun 1882 Lawrence Co, MO) Sarah Neece (b. 1804 Jefferson Co, TN, m. abt 1822, d. abt 1857 Green Co, IL) William Neece (b. 1805 Jefferson Co, TN, m.1830 LCT, d. Apr 1849 Green Co, IL) Mary Ann (Polly) Neece (b. 25 Apr 1808 Jefferson Co, TN, m. abt 1825, d. 3 Dec 1869 Waltonville, Jefferson Co, IL) John N. Neece, Jr, (b. 1810 Jefferson Co, TN, m. abt 1833, d.abt 1856 LCT) Naomi Neece (b. 22 May 1812 LCT, m. abt 1832 Moore Co, TN, d. 18 Sep 1884 Moore Co, TN) Hardin "Hardy" Holeman Neece (b. 18 Dec 1815 LCT, m. 6 Dec 1835 LCT, d. 14 Jul 1895 Lawrence Co, MO) Permelia Neece (b. 1817 LCT, m. 30 Jan 1834 LCT, d. 1869 Lawrence Co, MO) Jesse Neece (1818 LCT, m. 1834 LCT, d. 1847 LCT) Harrison Hopwood Neece (b. 13 Oct 1819 LCT, m. 3 Jul 1839 LCT, d. 24 Jan 1901 Modesto, IL) Henry W. Neece (b. 1820 LCT, d. 1841 LCT) James K. Neece (b. 1825 LCT, m. 16 Sep 1842 LCT, d. Nov 1843 LCT) Barksdale Neece (b. 1828 LCT, m. 11 Sep 1851 LCT, d. 1869 Lawrence Co, AR) In addition to the above, and amazingly, I might add, my mother's line also has roots in LCT thru Madison T King (b. 8 Jan 1822 LCT, m. 16 Nov 1848, d. 4 Sep 1900 Nacodoches Co, TX). He was the eldest of 8 children & son of Davis King (b. 1800 North Carolina, m. ??, d. 24 Jan 1864 Nacodoches Co, TX) and Mary (Polly) Sartin (b. 11 Feb 1804 Franklin Co, TN, d. 18 Apr 1886 Nacodoches Co, TX). He is the only child listed as born in LCT, the second, Anderson A. King, being born in Franklin Co, TN about 1825. My grandfather Towry is mostly a mystery to me. All I know of him was that his name was Tillman Towry and he died when my father was about 14. That would have made it around 1959 or so. I was told he was quite a bit older than his wife. She was Ollie Victoria Williams Towry and died when I was about 9, around 1976. Her birthday was Feb 14, 1909 or 1911. I've seen her grave and know that she's buried in LCT, but I can't remember where. I've spoken with TN Vital Records and the TN State Library & Archives. Yesterday I requested the library to look into Ollie Towry's birth cert. I'll try to have Vital Records look for Tillman Towry's death cert. Any suggestions on where to go from there? Her son Joe still resides in Signal Mountain Tennessee, Mary lives in Japan, Tres in Maryland, and Helen.....Gee, I cant remember, I will have to look that up and get back to. I hope this helps you out. If you were a good friend of hers, rest assure that she had the best care that we could all give her. We of course could not take her traveling ot the countries that she loved, but we went to the library every week to get books to read to her about the coutries that she had been to. We played audio tapes of her journeys that she had taken while she was there. we took her constantly on outings around Chattanooga to see the sights, museums, and tried to make her life as pleasant as we could. She was a great lady and I loved her very much. But she died in peace in her sleep, and for that we can be grateful for. If there is anything else that I can do let me know. In the 1870's my GGGandfather, William H. "Henry" Hall was a farmer somewhere around the Molino-Carmargo area. He had went out that day to feed his animals when he was attacked and bitten by a rabid dog. Afterwards, as he began to go mad I suppose, he was tied to a tree where he died. I don't know if this is true, but interesting. Are any of you familiar with any rabies cases in the county. Dr. Calvin David Curlee, was attempting to end his misery, by giving him massive doses of poisons. Tom Parker recovered and live longer than Dr. Curlee. This episode is documented in the book, "The Scamps of Bucksnort" by Lily May Pamplin. It is a very good book, in relation to that part of LCT history, family stories. Jim -- End of message --
