Can you provide me with a date/time of the story and a date,etc.. of the book? As you know, rarely does a human recover from rabies. It is almost a sure death. There have been cases where this has occured. Your mention is one of them. The rate of recovery in the 1800's, as far as I know, is non-existent. However, there are cases in this century where this has occured. GODSPEED -- End of message -- From: fournier@lc.gulfnet.com Subject: Re: Rabies in Lincoln County Date: Fri, 1 Nov 1996 10:07:05 -0500 On the subject of rabies...my great grandmother, Evalena (Smithson) Lockett had a "mad stone"...it was just a smooth rock!!! She lived with us when I was a child (in the 1940s) and people would come from far and wide to get her to treat people who had been bitten by supposedly rabid animals. She said the stone had been left to her by her grandmother, Addie (McMackin) Campbell (b.1829). I have no idea what happened to this stone after Evalena's death. Has anyone heard of such stones before? What on earth made people think they could cure rabies? Guess this rabies cure should be noted in an old time medicinal book. I wonder how many madstones poor ol Henry had applied to him before he succumbed to it's misery? The stories mentioned gives me hope that I might find Henry mentioned in a Fayetteville Observer page. Wish I had access to the m-film. What does "applied and adheared" mean exactly. GODSPEED -- End of message -- From: "C. Y. Thomas" Subject: Rabies and the Mad Stone Date: Sat, 2 Nov 1996 21:16:50 -0600 Some of the old cures makes one wonder how any of us managed to be here today!! This is an abridged account of one such stone and its use. The article by Mrs. R. L. Vance is from "A History of Lee County Texas." "In the early part of this century it was not uncommon thing for people bitten by a suspected rabid dog or other animal, or by a poisonous snake or spider, to travel for many miles in any way possible to to get to the home of Mrs. Samuel L. (Grandma) Woodward in Lexington, so she could draw the "poison" out with a madstone. "The stone was given to her, following the death of her husband in 1899, by a Co. Ruthven who had come to Lexington following the Civil War. He felt it would help her support her family. She charged a fee of $25.00 if "poison" was present in the wound being treated, but nothing if the wound proved negative. She was often paid in livestock or farm produce. "The method for using the stone, according to her grandson, Rufus J. Woodward of Lexington, was as follows: The stone was put into a big metal cup of sweet milk to boil; the wound was scarified with a small penknife, and the stone was then applied ot the spot as hot as the person could stand it. It was left about ten minutes then moved a little to test if it was sticking. If it did not stick she again boiled it in fresh milk and repeated the process. A second failure to stick was considered evidence that the wound had no "poison" in it. "If , however, the stone stuck to the wound it was allowed to remain on until it loosened of its own accord. This might take forty-five minutes or two hours. As soon as it came loose it was boiled in milk again - perhaps twice - to get the poison out before it was again applied. The milk always turned green if the stone stuck, and the applications were continued until the milk no longer showec sign of discoloration. Usually three applications were required to cleanse the wound. " The madstone, which is now owned by Rufus J. Woodward, is a flat, egg-shaped porous object about an inch in width and some one and three-fourth inches in length. It looks much like lime-stone with a pinkish tinge. Col. Ruthven claimed it was taken from the stomach of a white elk. "It is not known just what the stone is; nor is it known just how and why they form in the insides of some animals. Some say it is th cud of a cud-chewing animal that somehow solidifies; others say not so, that even birds have been known to have stones with curious powers taken from their insides. Another theory is that it is a ball of hair that lays in the stomach until it turns to stones. Apparently, not all stones found in animals are mad stones. Some say they must come from the stomachs of albino animals." C. Y. cythomas@sage.net cythomas@aol.com 72270.1040@compuserve.com C. Y. Also, if anyone doesn't know what a gedcom is, or is having trouble getting one to load, just ask, I'll do my best to help. Also, I will be glad to add other items of Davidson interest to my web page, such as Davidson family stories, articles about famous Davidson's, etc. I would also like to add other Clan Davidson items if anyone has anything. I'm not sure what a gedcom is and I'm not on the web, just on AOL. There doesn't seem to be anyone that I can ask about AOL's new web service, but then again, I have a Mac and they don't seem to be able to perfect THAT service. I see that you are interested in Anderson's and Moody's. I, too, have an interest in Andersons as my Daniel Pearson Holman married Mary Anderson in Fayetteville, Lincoln Co., TN 27 Jan 1842. I believe that her mother was also Mary Anderson and she had a brother Amos Anderson. Her tombstone indicated that she was born in Howard Co., MO and came to 'this place' LCT in 'infancy', which I assume is anytime until age 21. Is you Moody related to the racing team of Holman and Moody in N.C.? That's my only connection, but my cousin J.C. Holman was partners with Moody and they became very well known and wealthy in the car racing world. I am looking for the parents of Benjamin McCants, b. abt 1811, TN. He married Martha Mitchell (d/o Eli Mitchell) and they lived in Bedford County. On 01 May 1815, the estate of David McCants was inventoried and recorded in LCT. The administrators were Sarah McCants and Joseph Harkins. Are David and Sarah the parents of Benjamin? One of the "Family Stories" is that Benjamin McCants was "raised by the Indians". Is there a record of an Indian raid in the 1811-1815 time period? Any info appreciated -- will share my info on McCants. I found the following info (abbreviated for this posting) at the National Archives. He was in the 32 Tenn Infantry. He joined as a private in 1861, was elected to Lieut and then Captain. He was captured at Ft. Donelson, sent to Johnson Is. Ohio and then in 1862 he was sent as a prisoner of war to Vicksburg. How can I find out what happened after this? =20 I know that E. Shields Wilson was a clerk of some sort in Boonshill or Fayetteville for most of his life after the war. My mother remembers that her father (William Young Wilson) was very embittered about politics and political life due to some incident in the 1880's. How can I find out what political appointment Shields Wilson held ( I am assuming that it was this type of appointment)? It might have been as post master at the local post office or as a clerk of the court. Sorry to be so vague as to what I am looking for but obviously I don't know. I am still searching with no success for information on Wilson's wife, Mary Louisa McDaniel Wilson. Is anyone researching the McDaniel's or Edmondson's from that area? I am also trying to find the link with the Young family. The above noted grandfather, William Young Wilson, was named for ? in the Young family. We think a grandmother but again this is all vague and unsure. Any help will be appreciated. I am lost. I live in Springfield, Ill., & have spent a lot of time in the Pinetree Cemetery at Patterson, Greene Co., Ill., where most of Leonard's family are buried. Have an article from the History of Greene Co., Ill., on this family which states that Leonard's parents were Nicholas & Catherine Millard Carriger, & that Leonard was born in Carter Co., Tn., & moved to Lincoln Co., Tn., when he was very young, & where on 06 March 1823, he married Sylvania Marsh. I do not have any proof, but I believe that Sylvania was a sister to my 3rd great grandfather, Rayford Marsh is who listed on the 1820 LCT census. I don't know if Rayford & his wife Lydia Unknown, were married there or not. I would be more than happy to share any info that I have about this family. Don
