Lincoln Co, TN Civil War Widow's Application for Pension Abstract Submitted by: dianeh@sfcn.org (Diane Heap) Thomas Boaz, widow Mrs. Leathan Thomisan Boaz, application # 8458, CSA, Tennessee pension. Leathan Boaz of Petersburg, Lincoln County, Tennessee, Route 3. Resident of Tennessee all her life. Maiden name, Leathan Thomison, born 18 September 1848 in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Married Thomas A. Boaz in Lincoln County, Tennessee March 14, 1867. Thomas enlisted at the beginning of the war in Company B, 44th Tennessee and served until he was captured in Virginia. He was in prison at the time of surrender. Thomas A. Boaz died in Lincoln County on 8 April 1918 and was not a pensioner. Thomas and Leathan had four children: John Boaz age 57, Fletcher Boaz, a son died at age of 11, Mrs. Mollie Smith age 53, Fannie Clark a daughter, 41 years of age. No property was claimed, widow lives with her children. J. A. Bruce of Winchester, Tennessee claimed to have been acquainted with Mrs. T.A. Boaz for about 30 years. He was also acquainted with her husband from 1861 until his death and testified that Thomas served about four years and was together with him when he was captured. War Department, Washington DC report: "The records show that Thomas Boaz, not found as Thomas A. Boaz, Pvt. Co. B, 44 Tenn Inf. C.S.A. enlisted at Shelbyville, Nov. 30, 1862, and on roll for November and December 1863 last on which borne, was reported with remark, deserted, Dec. 13, 1863, at Rogersville. Dropped from roll Dec. 25, 1863. Subsequent rolls cover the period from Jan 1 to Dec 31, 1864. Union Prisoner of War records that as a deserter he reported at Mulberry Gap, Tennessee, Dec. 16, 1863, took the oath of allegiance at Louisville Jan 10, 1864, and was paroled and sent north of the Ohio River. No later record found."
