It stated: Herewith may be found the article of agreement of this company, together with a complete list of the members. A friend who knows them well, says that a better company was never mustered into service from Tennessee, and we have no doubt he is correct. We know that it embraces some as choice spirits as ever shouldered a gun: We the undersigned constitute ourselves Minute Men for the service of the Confederate States of America. We pledge our honor and all that is near and dear to us, to stand by this obligation at all hazards, and sign with the full knowledge of the fact that Peter Turney has authority from the War Department of the Confederate States to raise a Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers for its service, and we are to be ready to march at the shortest notice from the said Tennessee whenever, wherever and however the occasion may require. Let him who backs down be published to the world as a coward, and the fact thrown into the teeth of his kith, kin, and children. As soon as the list shall receive all the names that can be obtained, the Captain is to report to Peter Turney at Winchester, who will report to the proper department. The names must be rapidly obtained, as we are subject to a call at any day: N C DAVIS Captain T J SUGGS 1st Lieutenant J G DAVIDSON 2d do J B TURNEY 3d do J W NELSON Orderly Sergeant Wm BUTLER 2d do J W CUNNINGHAM 3d do J A MILLIEN 1st Corporal M S DENHAM 2d do J T McDANIEL 3d do FELIX BOYLES 4th do Carpenter P N Gunter W J Zimmerman H P Douthot W A Collins Abner McKinney J C Tooly W W McGuire C B Moore Cyrus Turney J T Barnes G E McAfee Wm Hedgepeth J Epps A C Hobbs Berry Epps F D Smith R C Taylor J C Sanders J M Sawyers G W jr Holland J W Cunningham A Turney James Abbott N B Tooly C M M Gill S W Edwards W W Cole W B Turney H T Woodard J R Wright S H Garrett George Myers R C West A J Davis R C McGuire C N Cunningham Wm Story H W Hill M B Caton A W Gary W H Parton A J Gary Ephraim Dyer Henry Hedgepeth C Emmons M M Alsop J D Hampton Pleasant Stewart T A Story Samuel Wright T B George J C Barnes J A Farrar J W Massey Wm Bearden R W Watt John W Downing J W Driver J O Bland Jas Hampton M B Downing D P George Jas Peebles Wm Massey John Oliver F J Massey Jas Woodard R Massey John R Hammond J T Woodard H C Finly W C Hill E J Poly Thos Mardin J T Wilson J T Dobbins J A Gunter T B Rogers J T Oldham W R Wright J A ABBOTT, H.B. Killed by Union soldiers at his home, "brutally murdered, riddled with bullets in 1864" in Buried in Whataker Cemetery, Fayetteville. An article in the "Lincoln County Pioneer" magazine for Volume VI, Number 1 (September 1976) shows: Hon. J.T. Coston, Osceola, Ark., Dear Sir, Replying to your letter asking for information concerning the killing of John R. Massey during the war between the states, 1861-1865, will say that on the 15th day of June, 1864, Gen. Payne, commanding Federal troops, came to Fayetteville, Tennessee, and had arrested three men, Thos. Massey, Wm. Picket, and F. Burroughs, and ordered them shot. John R. Massey, a discharged Confederate soldier from the 1st Tenn. Regt. Infantry (Turney's Regt.) hearing of the order, went to Gen. Payne and told him he had the wrong Massey, that his brother, Thos. Massey, had never been in the army, and had a family with small children, and had nothing to do with the army, but if he must have Massey blood, to take him, and turn his brother loose, that he had been a Confederate soldier and was discharged. "Whereupon, the General ordered Thos. Massey released and John R. Massey shot in his stead, with Wm. Pickett and F. Burroughs, which was immediately done, without a court-martial or trial, on the 15th day of June, 1864. He also ordered that their bodies should remain on the ground all day, evidently to terrorize and intimidate the citizens of Lincoln County, who were intensely Southern. The citizens were afraid to carry the bodies into their homes. "As sundown Mrs. Milly Goodrich, widow of John Goodrich, told them to carry the bodies to a storehouse she owned on the west side of the public square at Fayetteville, and keep them until they were to be buried, which was done. A number of young men and ladies sat up with the bodies all night. "They were buried by the citizens of the town the next day in the cemetery by the Presbyterian Church. John R. Massey was buried on the plot owned by John Goodrich's family, by the side of his sister Anna Massey, who was the wife of John C. Goodrich, who was the son of Mrs. Milly and John Goodrich. They were also the parents of James F. Goodrich, who afterwards married Sarah Clark, who was a niece of John R. Massey. "Those men were shot near Mrs. Goodrich's home, on the hill now occupied by the Lincoln County High School. "The Zollicoffer-Fulton Chapter United Daughters of Confederacy erected a stone marker on the ground, with the inscription: "John R. Massey, Wm. Pickett, F. Burroughs Martyred June 15, 1864 U.D.C. Erected June 15, 1914. "With best wishes for you and family. Yours truly, T.C. Little, Comdr, Camp 114 U.C.V. Fayetteville Tenn. Also shows in (T) and (*) as SUGG. (CNOT*) Lieut. T.J. Sugg, A.A.C.S. 1st Reg. Tenn Vols Camp Fisher, Va. Returns for March 1862 On Abstract of issues to Troops (return No 2) you have 707 rations of Beef and same of Meal more than the number of men and days drawn for authorize - disallowed. Same Abstract has an issue of 1376 rations of Bacon without stating number of men and number of days drawn for; See Sec 1136 of Subsistence Regulations. Your issue of Salt in excess of 3 quarts to 100 rations is disallowed. Return of Provisions wants your signature. You have not given on it the average weight of 16 head of cattles taken up from Invoice Voucher No 1. In taking up Bacon from Abstract of issues to Troops you have 507 where it should be 1539 lbs; and have omitted to take up 67 lbs Bacon from Abstract of Sales to officers. The issue entered on it of 1521 lbs Bacon and 2028 lbs Hard Bread stated as "issued and kept on hand by order of Commanding Genl", should have been entered on your Abstract of provisions issued to Troops. As it stands, there is no voucher sustaining it, and being still in your hands at the time of making your Returns you cannot be allowed credit for it. Wastage on candles is disallowed, not being sustained by certificate or affidavit. J.W.B. Returns for Feby 1862 On Abstract of Provisions issued to Troops the same miscalculation occurs in reducing rations of Salt to bulk as mentioned in relation to Jany's Returns. The ration of candles, Coffee and Soap was reduced one half in Jan'y 1862. The remarks in relation to wastage on Jany returns apply to this month; do also remarks in relation to reducing quantities to proper denominations. J.W.B. Returns for Jan'y 1862 Invoice Voucher No 2, to Return of Provisions wants certificate filled and signed by party transferring provisions. All vouchers must be signed by the Officer himself, and not by his Serg't or clerk. Quantities must be reduced to the proper denominations on all your Returns. In adding up rations of Coffee, on Abstract of Provisions issued to Troops, you make an error of 2016 rations too many. In reducing Salt to bulk, on same Abstract you have made the calculation at 4 quarts to the 100 rationing when you are not allowed under the regulations to exceed 3 quarts to the 100 rations, even where the entire issue of meat consist of fresh beef. Wastage on Flour & Candles is not allowed, unless substantiated by proper certificate or affidavit; nor is wastage on Coffee and Salt, in excess of the ordinary allowance. J.W.B. TAYLOR, Joseph C. Private. Enrolled 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 38; absent in prison at Lynchburg, Va., for the murder of Joseph G. Davidson, 18 May 61, another member of the Company; hung at Boons Hill, 18 Oct 61. Also shows in (N) as Joseph G. An article in the "Fayetteville Observer" for 24 October 1861, p3, stated: "THE END OF A DESPARATE MAN Joseph C. Taylor was hung by a portion of the people of this county near Boon's Hill on last Saturday, for killing 2d Lieut. J.G. Davidson at Lynchburg, Va., on Saturday, the 18th of May last. Taylor was arraigned for trial at Lynchburg, but because of the absence of witnesses, who belonged to the army, we are told, the case was dismissed. He returned to this county on Monday of last week, was arrested on Friday night, and executed as we have stated. A man residing in that section of the county where he made his home, said if Taylor had returned expressing regret for what he had done, and avowing his desire to live as a peaceful citizen, he would not have been molested. But instead of that, he came back breathing defiance, and threatening the lives of some of our citizens; and the community felt that, in self-defence, his career ought to be stopped. He forfeited the protection of the law, and paid the penalty. He was generally considered a recklessly bad man. The foregoing statement is based on information derived from others, as we cannot speak from our own knowledge." (NOT*) TAYLOR, Joseph G. Private. see Joseph C. TAYLOR. (N) TULEY, Charles M.M. He was admitted to that institution March 30, 1874, and has remained there since. The remains were taken to Hughey Tuesday for burial. He was a brother of Capt. Jake Turney and served during the war under the stars and bars, and on many a bloody field endangered life and employed his every energy for the defense of his loved Southland. He was a man of superior intelligence and after the war engaged in teaching school; he was also of an intensely religious disposition and was a factor in his community for good until his mind weakened. He was taken to the asylum, hoping that treatment would restore his reason to its throne, but these hopes were never realized." Not shown in (T). (N*) TURNEY, Joel T. Private.
