He resided during the Revolution in Burke County, North Carolina. His father was a Tory, who served with the King's troops in the battle of King's Mountain and was killed in that battle. Josiah Brandon was captured by men under Colonel Joseph McDowell who, when he heard the boy's statement, released him, realizing that the boy had been under age. Josiah Brandon then immediately entered the service of the American troops. George Davidson testified to this action saying that "Josiah Brandon immediately enlisted under my uncle. Captain Samuel Davidson. No censure was ever imputed to him because of his part in the battle of King's Mountain." This last statement is not wholly true as a complaint was made to the Pension Department that Brandon served as a Tory. The Pension Department, however, ruled in his favor and his pension was allowed. He served under Captain Samuel Davidson and Capt. Boykin pursuing Tories, and under Capt. Samuel against Indians. He was born June 6, 1761, according to the record in his father's Family Bible which he had in his possession in 1832. He was a minister. He married Rachel Brown, March 8, 1781. She survived him and applied for pension July 7, 1839 while living in Lincoln County, and was then 80 years of age Among their children were Logan V. Brandon and Samuel Brandon. Samuel Brandon testified that he was born in 1790 and that there were four children older than he. Note:- This is one of the most voluminous pension records owing to the charge that Brandon was a Tory and the extensive investigation which followed.
