He was born in Orange County, North Carolina, September 15, 1760. He was an invalid pensioner under the first act passed in North Carolina concerning pensions. He stated in his application that he moved to Davidson County, Tennessee, in 1805, and lived there until 1809 when he moved to Lincoln County, Tennessee.
